It looks like a mortar post, during the last war there were lots of these positioned for defence in case of invasion. The mortar would be portable (2 men required to carry it) and could be moved from one post to another as required, don't know were it is but there are loads still around in this area.

No, you're quite right Martin. It is a "Spigot Mortar" base, to be used by the Home Guard in WW2.

 

There's at least one at Ludham Bridge.

 

I think there's something about them on Nigel Pope's Ludham Archive website.
