Occasional movie making

Hoping London(Spielberg)Rascal will see this and respond. Some of us occasionally fancy taking a wee movie whilst out and about. Not on Robin's epic scale but just as a fond reminder. My Canon EOS sadly does not have a video function so I am considering buying a basic camera to do this. I got this from Maplins today and immediately thought this might just be the jobbie

Hope the link works and look forward to some response!

Hi Trevor

I have a Go Pro 3+ black which is. Similar type of camera, although more expensive and the results that produces at the resolution this one states are stunning. (This camera can record up to 4k )

Bare in mind that there is no viewfinder or screen (on the Go Pro anyway) but if you mount it to the boat and set it away the wide lens will capture the whole width of the river. We got some great results.

Also the batteries don't last too long and the memory card fills up quite quickly but i set mine at 720 x60fps so get quite a bit on a 32gb card and it's great quality.

Hope this helps

David

I think at the price of this it's worth a shot

Trevor,

I’m sorry, I don’t go near Vivitar anything I took a great deal of time to consider when buying my latest cameras – and I especially wanted to see footage taken on the cameras past any hype or written reviews people have said.

I was very happy with a Chinese ‘un named’ action camera the well known TLC SVC200. It is frankly stunning!  It shoots at up to 1080p HD (but i use it in 720p) and can shoot at 60FPS.  It is what I used on Rhapsody to film the stern mooring at Ranworth and also the underwater footage at Bargsate on Brinks Royale.  Here is the link to buy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EVODSS2and here is the Tech Moan review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22plKNaYab0&list=UU5I2hjZYiW9gZPVkvzM8_Cw

Also of note is the is SJ4000 – this was used to film on Barton Broad on top of Rhapsody and also filmed the mooring at How Hill mounted on the side of the boat.  You can see here to buy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HJMU2IWand here the Tech Moan review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnHDu-oW7_Y&list=UU5I2hjZYiW9gZPVkvzM8_Cw

In my opinion these are two of the best sub £100 action cameras you can buy – anything else and your be compromising too much on the optics and resolution – along with sound quality.

Naturally these are good to stick on the boat and hit record, not so good to actually use as a video camera.

Tech Moan is a guy from Manchester who does very good reviews of action cameras and dash cams amongst other things and well worth look at his other videos.

I'll second the recommendation Robin's given there.

The http://www.techmoan.com website is run by an independent, unbiased guy that tests many gadgets like actioncams and gives very detailed reviews from actual user experience.

His tests reveal what is good value and what is rubbish, regardless of name or price.

The electronics needed to capture high quality 1080p video has shrunk to such a small size now that the functionality is present in many ordinary still cameras, small action cams, and even glasses.

I tend to use three cameras now, depending on the application.

I use a Sony Actioncam fixed to a helmet or bike, with a wrist mounted wifi viewfinder. That also has a built-in GPS, so can record video that can be combined with an overlaid moving track map, and speed, time etc..

I have a pair of 140 degree HD sunglasses which also record genuine 720p video, with a remarkably good picture and sound, unlike the cheap ones which have a rubbish picture.

The most used though, is my Fuji HS50EXR Bridge SLR camera. This is much more bulky than the mini cameras, but the rear LCD and internal LCD viewfinders and 40x zoom lens make it much more flexible to use.  The conventional design enables much steadier shots and framing of the subject, and full manual override of any of the settings, even focus. The ability to view the subject through the internal eye level LCD viewfinder while videoing lifts it into the pro functionality. True DSLRs can't do that, because the mirror stays up during movie shooting.

..and it takes excellent high res stills too, even at the same instant.... :)
