I was proceeding "on my lawful occasions" this morning along Lower Staithe Rd in Stalham, when I came across a Griff Tile van parked outside John Williams Boats.

So now I have met Griff (at last) and held up his progress by about an hour over a coffee and a chat. Thank God the pubs were not open yet or I might have held him up for longer!

At least I can tell you that the result of the varnish looks very good! Still touch dry when I saw it. We both agreed it looks just like Grendel's model!

Right that's me ran out of time once again and ready to depart for Donny. Th house flag  as said the crab is for Derrick, the Sparkers badge is mine, the stokers badge is Howard's, Robin has a compass thingy.

Well that was some eight days.  Left Home late Friday night of the 5th, onboard at silly o clock Saturday morning, sleeves rolled up and went for it.  I had some proper late nights and early mornings to acheive as many coats of varnish as I could between curing times.  Monday morning drive down to the smoke to assist Robin, where on Tuesday night the van snapped one if its control cables to the gearbox, that lost me a full day but gave me a day off while it was repaired. Thursday morning at around 0015 I was onboard 'B.A' once more after another sand down, another coat of varnish It was lights out by 0200.

Friday was spent predominately getting the dressing pieces cut and fit for the inside of the transom, eleven pieces in all, I ran out fo the dressed ply so popped round to J.W's (Our Teak store is at his place) where I cut two pieces of teak to complete it.  More varnish applied.  Doug cam calling as he does along with J.A and Vaughan a pleasure to have thier company as per the norm.

So what got done and completed this time?

104)     Varnish x 1 coat kite stops Brava in ¼ berth, 4 x coats hook noggin and 1 x coat Morse control knob Brava

105)     Fit earthing strap between Beta and plumb block enabling galvanic isolator loop to protect engine & G/box

106)     Fit noggin to fwd stbd hob under fastening hole, check gas fitting

107)     Supply / Fit two aluminium brackets for new TV above helm

Q9)      Toe Rails – Flat back with 240 grit paper, apply 1 x coat of Brava varnish

R3)      Remove / replace tired dressing plywood to well deck area, varnish etc

            Required - 4 x coats Ravalak to 2 x teak pieces, 3 x coats Ravalak to 9 x pieces, 1 x coat Brava to all 11 pieces

R7)      Touch up 2 x pack paint / Varnish to fwd coach house roof above fwd cabin windows

R8)      Fit top and bottom curtain hooks / rod in quarter berth (O/c varnishing

R9)      Aft Bulkhead – Strip/sand, apply Oxalic acid, stain, 5 x coats Ravalak, 1 x coat Brava varnish

The Oxalic acid was next door to friggin useless, in fact it was not even that good.  However after 2 x coats of stain and the varnish, it does look far better that it was and is now once again fully weather protected

S1)       Investigate rainwater leak aft kite in ¼ Berth

S2)       Pressurise f/w expansion tank to 22:5 psi

S3)       Wheelhouse fwd / aft coach house roof – 240g sand, 1 x coat of Brava varnish

S4)       Replace faulty LED fwd, fwd passageway

S5)       Foc’sle deck coaming - 240g sand, 1 x coat of thinned Ravalak, 1 x coat of Brava varnish

S6)       Extend 2 x flag tails, fit to tri mast.

So we move forwards once more.  Great fun this boating lark innit?

If only Martin.  However there are a few consequences up here in Gods County of achieving such a lifestyle - Family, Friends, Shooting, Biking, Not to mention consequences in Norfolk - Workshop, Tools, Hovel, Finances to name but a few.  Nice dream though all the same

Hi Griff family , friends you will see more of them as they want to come and  see you, shooting , biking no better place to be ,plenty of workshops to rent etc.

Having been here on and off for a few years it's not a bad place to be, but don't tell every one...

Thing is John, MrsG would never go for it, besides our daughter (Next village) is due to produce her first child this October, as a result not only is MrsG rooted here and chained down, there has been full leave ban implemented for any social activities from the middle of September onwards - I am duly informed that this one is not up for discussion in any shape or form no matter what the circumstances.  I've already had to cancel a late September weekend afloat with Kelly Brook and Holly Willowbooby

Biking - whilst those Norfolk country roads can be fun, they're somewhat restricting for the Tiger, it needs sweeping large curves with attitude and altitude too.  Shooting - Since leaving the RN it took me about 12 years to secure a place on a private game shoot (In Lincolnshire) then a further 3 years to move over to my local game shoot.  Getting a full gun in a local shoot is dead man's shoes - it's that difficult.  Plus I have four regular social groups (Other than joint friends we both socialise with) they are biking, clay / game shooting and the Sunday night GOM, Harvey Arms club - I'd miss them too much.  But the biggest reason for me not to move to the Broads would be I fear it would become the norm and taken for granted and not so special anymore.  Then there is the oh so tiny detail of having to borrow a fortune for a riverside or close to riverside property

May 29 was the last update I did, I'm so far behind it's embarrassing.  I really need to keep this thread up to date for the topsides appearance if nowt else but for Grendels sake with appearance re the 'B.A' model #2, so here goes -

Upgrade items completed:-

114)  Make / fit / finish two teak rope turnbuckle hooks for the MOB line stowage.      This replace the stainless steel hooks and enables the line to be paid out instantly, time being of the essence in a MOB situation

119)  Supply / fit two handles in the Fwd Stbd berth for TV stowage when not in use

120)  Adjust hang / fit of Port Fwd cabin sliding door

122)  Retaining bolt top Stbd aft passage way door - Fit teak pad to engage deckhead better and keep the damn door open

 

Maintenance Items Completed:-

R1)  Remove cant rail between deck and cabin sides

R2)  Survey decks / cabin sides after removal of R1 - Repair any areas as required - None as it turned out

R4)  Sort out shoreside locket - this took three of us one and half days to do incorporation with R5 !

R5)  Sort out onboard stores

R6)  Calibrate onboard alarm system, replace batteries

S8)  Replace new solar control panel (Guarantee item)

S9)  Beta 2'500 x Hr minor service

T1)  Investigate rainwater leak in fwd stbd cabin, apply creeping crack cure, clean out drain holes

T2)  Relocate throttle cable supports in engine bay

T3)  Remove ignition switch, replace and secure

T4)  Supply new HD blue ray player with hdmi cable

 

That leaves 12 outstanding upgrade items and 8 outstanding maintenance items.  Some of which will affect model #2.  Some of those above items have been started and are ongoing, one of which is HUGE (Dek-King)  To add to that I received an email from our resident boat researcher today (You know, the slim good looking one that has a perchance for blue fenders) informing me that I am due to receive a lot of expensive goodies anytime soon from a courier that are to be fair on our upgrade list, most of these will effect model #2.  The snag is that in my world I live and work in a 7 x day week with only 24 x Hrs in each day.

It's gonna be January before I can get onto most of them at best

I have been looking at the forums for some time now before as Mr Anonymous, but now as a member I can comment on what a fine and outstanding boat BA looks like. I can appreciate the hard work involved in looking after a woody and the GRP lot don't realise the easy life they have to yours, and although I haven't seen her in the flesh/varnish, she does look great on YT.

But I would suggest you keep Her and Robin away from ice.
