Interesting morning today in the yard, we had a breach in the flood defense bank and the Yare decided to take advantage! Fortunately we were about to get some posts and sandbags in to stem the flow but it got pretty deep in places.

Time for an update on our boat 'Perfick'! Bad news is that she's still on dry land in our yard and still some way from being ready to go back into the water. The good news is that both engines and drive legs appear to be OK so mechanically she doesn't need much work however the inside is a very different story. Basically we had a panel that came adrift so thought no problem we'll just screw that back on, however it turns out there wasn't much to screw it to. On removing the panel the wood behind it was basically dust and the same on the next panel, and the next and so on. It looks like all of the windows had been leaking for a very long time and all of the wood above waist height was gone. After much stripping out she now looks like this There is some new wood going back in now but we've still got quite a lot of work. I've completely ripped out the 12v system as being a complete tech head we're going to have something pretty special going back in, think media centre, wifi, 3 / 4G connectivity, remote tracking and fore and aft external cameras that can be viewed from anywhere etc. We've also got a reconditioned 5Kw diesel air heater which will be getting fitted to the engine compartment to keep the noise in the cabin down. All of the windows are out being refurbished at the moment and we're even having a new roof cut for the cockpit area. One thing I'm pleased about is how the wood band (it probably has a proper name!) around the outside has come up. We had to replace a couple of small sections however the rest was simply sanded back and looks fantastic now. I also bought some nice deep blue anti-foul at the boat jumble the other week and managed to pick up a brand new cream leather drivers seat! Very much looking forward to getting her back on the water and enjoying my first ever boat holiday hopefully in the next couple of months. I think driving it's going to be a challenge as so far the biggest boat I've driven is a day boat out of Wroxham! Thankfully the very nice people that run the marine company down here have offered to come out with me on the first couple of trips.

I was about to say the same! Sadly out in Reedham we didn't get any Looks like we're going to have an entire winter without a single flake of snow.

Also saw the thread on the other forum, it does look like it's going to happen. To be honest I think it's fair enough to continue to fund the ranger who obviously provides assistance to holidaymakers and £3 isn't a lot really. I also think that it's far more appropriate for the funding to come from boaters who use the service rather then the general tax payers, many of whom don't.

You can just ignore the spam folder. By default it won't be downloaded to your devices and messages get removed automatically once they're been in there for 30 days. It's really just a fail safe just in case the filters get it wrong however in my experience they're pretty good. I would say that across my 4 mail accounts I get less then 1 false positive every 6 months and probably only a couple of spam messages will make it though in the same period, which with the level of e-mail traffic I get is very impressive.

Odd, I use Google Apps for my personal mail (basically gmail) and get zero spam. If I check my spam folder there's usually hundreds of them but none ever make it through to my inbox. I take it you're just ignoring the spam folder?

We had quite a good view as it came past............ And then the following morning I was sat at my desk when I heard a low rumble, looked up and it was coming back again! Really good to see the river being used for commercial purposes, we've only been in the village for 13 years so it's the biggest thing I've seen on the Yare.

The larger antenna in a 3g router will be able to lock onto a far weaker signal then your average phone. I have set up quite a few such systems for near-shore vessels and the increase in range was quite impressive, there is no reason that you wouldn't see similar gains inland as well. That said high speed coverage will undoubtedly improve with the deployment of 4G so I suspect most people will simply use their mobiles to create a local hotspot and then tether other devices to them. I was quite shocked when I checked the price of the Hubba routers, hugely overpriced for what is basically a 3G router with a high gain antenna.

It was pretty high here last night, was down in our offices moving servers etc to higher ground until pretty late! A lot better today however parts of the yard still have a covering of water.l It was a good couple of inches over the quayside last night, still pretty high today Just hoping this evening's tide isn't too bad and the drains have a chance to catch up!

Was working away in the office the other day and happened to look out of the window just in time to see an awesome sunset. Sadly only had my phone with me but still managed to get a couple of snaps.................... Must start keeping a decent camera in the office!

My understanding is that business and individuals both contribute to NBF so I think they do have an obligation to keep the site running. I also run an enthusiasts site(rover800.info) and although I take no payment whatsoever for the hosting or time I spend keeping the site running I still feel it's my duty to keep the site running. After all a lot of people have come to rely on it as a source of information and resource to exchange ideas and information so it would be a little unfair for me not bother and let it die. Anyway I'm more then happy on NBN and although I think it would be a shame for us to loose the archive of information that NBF provides I am glad that we have an alternative.

We have decided to rename Perfick whilst we're carrying out the refurbishment work however we have no idea what to call her! At the moment the lead contender is 'Stirling' as my much missed Grandfather flew in Stirlings during the war and I also still own his Rover Sterling which is currently in storage and will be my next project once I finish pouring money into the RLM shaped hole in our yard! At the moment the name isn't set in stone so I'm just throwing it out to the community to see if anyone has any alternatives?

To be honest I gave up on NBF almost as soon as I started using it, way to slow and frustrating. The annoying thing is there is quite a lot of good content on there which will be lost if the site doesn't make it back online. To me it also seems a little crazy writing your own code for the forum. At the end of the day projects such as vbulliten or phpbb have hundreds of developers all working every day to ensure that the code is secure and reliable, I'm not sure how 1 person could hope to match that. Unfortunately running custom code there will be no pre-defined import routines that he could use to port to a better supported platform so that could be quite a task in itself.

I have a way to go! I'm sure when I start renovating the boat I'll be a bit more active!

Excellent explanation! Just to add to this DSL is also subject to the same problem that ADSL is in so much as the further you get from the exchange, the slower your speed will be. I'm not to sure where Richard's server is but if he's out in the sticks he may well still have pretty slow speeds, just equally slow in both directions! I do wonder why he hasn't at least put a holding page up with a status message, that would only take a couple of mins to do?

I didn't use the other forum because even when it was running it was painfully sloooooooooow!

Yep it was great to see her down and secure, looking forward to getting her back in the water already though......obviously with all the work done! We had 7 boats out today so pretty busy in the yard, I kept getting distracted and going out to take photo's / video so I've got a big pile of work to catch up on this evening now. . :-(

Due to problems with the crane in the yard here Perfick's been stuck in the water waiting for a lift since I bought her, however ADB Services today hired in a crane and she finally took off! And she's now on dry land! I was especially nervous as I bought the boat on the water so didn't really know quite what to expect however thankfully the hull looks OK. She now needs a lot of work to get her in the condition I want her to be in, however at least we can get started on that now. If all goes well I'd like to get her back in the water in mid-March so that I can learn how to drive a boat before the river gets too crowded. Interestingly there's another RLM 31 just been lifted out and is sat next to Perfick in the yard.......does that belong to anyone on here?

I've said it before but I'm actually surprised that a forum running on bespoke software on a Windows 2000 server at the end of someone's ADSL line is up as much as it is! My company has a bang up-to-date, hardened Linux server in a data centre in London and even that requires constant updating and monitoring to fend of the internet nasties!

I think that people sometimes forget / don't realise that Yarmouth is primarily an industrial town. Yes it has a beach and during the summer many, many tourists but it also has a large number of companies that service the oil, gas and more recently the renewables industries. If you take it in that light then it's probably one of the nicer industrial towns........that said having spent 15 years working in Yarmouth I can't believe I'm actually defending it!

It was pretty high at the quay heading at our yard today, normally the timbers in this pic are quite a bit above the water line but about an hour before high tide they were already going under! We did get a little water in the yard near the crane but other then that nothing to worry about.........although at one point I did seriously consider moving my car to higher ground! Still not as bad as 2007 though......... The flood defences worked overtime that day!

I wasn't commenting on other people, just trying to put my comment into perspective.

I would disagree, it's been a very long time since W2K received any forms of updates and yet the internet has moved on so even the most basic attacks will be enough to take the server down. In addition W2K does not support any on the normal high availability techniques we would use to keep servers running. To use W2K on a public facing server now is madness and to be honest I'm actually impressed that it's up as much as it is! And yes built a few data centres in my time and run a company the provides hosting amongst other things so I have a bit of an insight into the topic
