  1. Very pleased to see this old tub being lovingly restored. You have mentioned a boat builder, you are lucky to have him. Has he ticked the 'no publicity' box?
  2. Sounds like a great event! If you would like to sail in another Arthur Ransome yacht and help towards her conservation then join the Nancy Blackett Trust:- https://nancyblackett.org/ Only £15 per year for a family. A gentle sail on the Orwell could be a useful experience for those members of this forum who have anxiety about the strange things that yachts do!
  3. N.B. Witham paints have moved to other side of Lowestoft - http://www.withamgroup.co.uk/woco/contactuswoco/
  4. And if you want to go sailing on the boat that was the inspiration for this story see here: https://nancyblackett.org/sailing/
  5. If 250 people got together and each pledged say £1,000 (they could be members of a forum perhaps) then they could set up a Trust to buy and manage this property. I have noticed that there are many people here with expertise and strong opinions who would like to see this property continue as a pub. Who knows there might even be the possibility of match funding from somewhere! Far fetched perhaps but community pubs do exist elsewhere.
  6. I presume BA will have to change their rules on display of registration marks, as at present not all craft have to do so.
  7. For me, one important issue this raises is that if a dog is your mate (assuming he isn't the skipper) make sure he understands the minimum skills needed to get the boat back to a safe harbour.
  8. From a selfish perspective damn shame it isn't still a lifting bridge. How did they manage to make the new bridge clearance just high enough to think you might get through with the mast up but know that you won't.
  9. Could this post be described as a super snub?
  10. Don't understand this - please show your workings for full marks!
  11. JM - you've lost me - which court case might they be prejudging?
  12. Rather alarmist perhaps? Those who choose to follow this advice might find their options somewhat limited.
  13. Be careful what you say on this forum..............................
  14. Don't worry that's normal for Norfolk.
  15. I agree that A,B,D and E can be shown to be untrue based on the narrative. However the question is which one must be true. We have been told that some people wanted brightly coloured jackets with hoods, some people wanted lightweight jackets etc but would they not want a brightly coloured lightweight jacket or a lightweight jacket with a hood?.i.e. we have to assume one choice excludes any other choices. I think the logic is rather sloppy and involves assumption. If this is an example of Grammar school standards perhaps I was lucky not to go! Or is there something else I am missing?
  16. I didn't take the 11 Plus because I was in the first year when comprehensives were introduced in my home area. However this post is not about that controversial subject. But i need some help from you whether or not you have passed or failed an 11 Plus or never taken one. On the BBC news website there is an explanation of the Grammar school system and the 11 Plus and they include some sample 11 Plus questions. This is one of them: Marco, Laura, Peter, Ben and Sally are out shopping for jackets. Ben and Laura want waterproof jackets, Peter and Sally want brightly coloured jackets with hoods, Laura and Marco want lightweight jackets and Marco and Ben want brightly coloured jackets but with a warm lining.Out of the following statements, which one must be true? A. Sally and Peter want different types of jackets. B. Only two people do not want brightly coloured jackets. C. No one wants a lightweight jacket with a hood. D. Sally wants a coat with a hood and a warm lining. E. Four of them do not want waterproofs. The correct answer is apparently C. Can anyone explain why? I can't work it out so I assume i wouldn't have passed the 11Plus!
  17. Am I to infer that the rest of the UK is forward?
  18. I haven't got a horn. Can anyone suggest an alternative sound signal?
  19. This thread brings to mind the medieval approach to religion. A language understood only by the elite hierarchy, mysticism and the presence of an omnipresent being (the internet). I know what "RAM" means I assume all the other posters do, that's why nobody bothers to explain?
  20. Stuart Great news. I assume that a similar notice will be posted in hard copy in marinas and boatyards across Norfolk and Suffolk? I know it's hard to believe but some boat owners do not read this or similar forums.
  21. As they are navy people i suggest going to the pub for three days and comparing tattoos.
  22. Mr Fish vs Mr Pikeman. Something fishy there..........................
  23. Hi I'm a bit confused about what you intend for below the waterline. Once you remove the old paint and make good any defects I think you need only a primer suitable for fibreglass and then antifoul (minimum 2 coats). Suggest you look at the International paints website or similar for accurate info on that. When choosing antifoul, two main points: were will it be used i.e. saltwater or briny water as in the Broads - on the former you need maximum protection strength, less important on the latter; the other point is watch out for immersion times - some antifouls need immersion in a few days, some a few months, others up to a year. When removing antifoul be very careful, it is very toxic. Sanding should only be done if you have industrial quality respirators. Scraping is a safer option and some paint companies do special antifoul strippers.
  24. Had a lovely sail today only slightly marred by managing to run aground on the Waveney downriver from St Olaves. Not for the first time but this time we were stuck fast. Fortunately only one hour before low tide and neaps so we hopefully would not have developed too much of a list but would have had a long wait before floating off. But a passing veteran wooden motor boat using great skill towed us off. This procedure was clearly new to his one crew member but she too played an important role. In the excitement I didn't notice the boat's name but if they read this or someone who knows them does, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks and more thanks................
