Pubs are to close as soon as possible tonight and not reopen tomorrow.

They may offer a takeaway service.

    Hi Chris

Am I able to stay in a hotel

    Use their restaurant

Have a tonsil rinse in the bar?

Moor stern on to another boat, eat at a restaurant, have a pint in a pub

All of us are facing social limitations and more importantly financial implications. I am at a loss to be able to offer advice or comfort.

  2. Perhaps, just a thought. Should we not be giving a consideration to our members on the Broads, on the river who have issues concerning their welfare during the current crisis. And our visitors, the holiday makers.

A simple contact for a local or a distant member for advice for those who require help. Guidance and assurance from those with local knowledge.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the frivolity of a game or whatever you like to call it should take second place under the current circumstances.

We need to be proactive in providing support and assurance that this forum in particular is foremost in providing support and help to those in need.

Hmm, my husband’s niece is planning to get married in early April. We have already bought a train ticket for my father in law (who’s in his ‘80s) to travel down to stay with us. I’m starting to think that it’s not a good idea for him to travel down by train. Worse, my brother in law is due to fly in from the States, also to stay with us before his daughter’s wedding. Well was...

    So many unknowns.

It is going to be a very difficult time for us all. You are not alone. Anne and I are facing similar problems.

I am afraid that the majority of families and our closest friends will be compromised by the effects of this virus.

On the slantandicular as we say in Norfolk. (Of the ugliest bridge in Norfolk). Who ever approved the design of this monstrosity?

Apparently they walked into the surgery. You couldn't make it up.

Indeed. Passed a large notice in the entrance foyer, prior to the reception area, which stated that "DO NOT ENTER WITH CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS. CONTACT 111 FOR ADVICE"

The reception area could at any one time have seated some thirty, elderly, frail, residents from our surrounding villages.

My wife and I were telephoned today and informed that our appointment at Brundall had been transferred to the surgery at Blofield.

Not a joke. No confirmation of this particular virus at Brundall.

But what it does demonstrate is the care and professionalism and precautions taken by the team at Brundall to ensure the health and welfare of thier patients.

On the news tonight Brundall doctors one confirmed case of someone returning from the far east.

Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app

Is that confirmation of someone returning from the far east or confirmation  of coronavirus.

It's been reported elsewhere that the BA's response was that it was 'none of their business'! If that is so then that is to be regretted. Granted that it is not their duty but surely it is their business, if only because it is a navigation issue.

BA is correct it is not their business. Well not all of it. Most of it is ours. And joy of joy's. More to come once all this building work off the NDR is completed. Where is it all going to go. Does anybody know.?

You won't be able to see the bridges at Wroxham or Potter let alone go under them.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the sewage outlet just down river from Thorpe, on bad days the smell is atrocious.

A bit confused Alan. I thought that the smell came from the main sewage works. Which outlet are you referring to?

  9. If you have not done so already you must give up smoking.

Go to your doctor and get signed up for pulmonary rehabilitation at your local hospital.

A six to eight week course. A one hundred percent commitment is required.

You will then be considered to be referred to a local gymnasium that specializes in people of your age group, capability, and suffer from COPD, episodes of chronic bronchitis,  bronchiectasis and other respiratory conditions.

You will be offered an emergency pack of antibiotics and steroids.

    You will not be alone.

I too avoid the boat when it's to cold and damp.

I understand about smoking until I gave up I smoked 40 plus a day,and enjoyed it.I was lucky. Never thought  I would  give up,but used with the nurse at our medical centre patches did the job.

I'm pleased my post as enlighted people.

Bronchiectasis is another condition similar to COPD and effects many people, indeed as with the latter many people have the condition but have not been diagnosed.

The coronavirus is of great concern and will lead to a serious exacerbation amongst COPD sufferers.

Fumes, petrol or deisel is another matter and to those who suffer from respiratory issues can and will find that prolonged exposure to this pollution may give rise to further complications.

The running of engines for periods of time, whilst moored, has far reaching implications for many over and above noise pollution, to those in close proximity to the fumes.

In the fullness of time action by the authorities will have to be taken.

Perhaps this year would be a good time to start.

it`s unfortunate that people on this forum WON`T accept that they don`t know everything about the broads, especially the land structure, and that things happen that are different to what THEY are told and prefer to believe. I won`t go any further on this, it`s all been argued before. As for Wroxham bridge, correct me if i`m wrong but has the clearance lessened to the same amount as Potter Heigham bridge, because my belief is it HAS`NT. That would suggest to me there are other reasons.

A bit confused by your reply. Where is the blockage? All the way down from the bridge to the Bure or are you not sure.

  12. 59 minutes ago, SPEEDTRIPLE said:

Totally agree John (sorry to disappoint you 😂) there are several reasons why the Thurne blockage airdraught has decreased, the whole of the east anglia region is gradually sinking, plus (contrary to what some want you to believe) the blockage Has sunk into the river bed. Fair enough, it may not be sinking any further, but with the report of sea levels rising, but as you say, nowhere near as much as the bridges airdraught has lessened, there's precious little else it can be.

Grendel reported last year that the east anglia region is sinking, so this will also have an effect, the only problem being others willingness to believe it, along with evidence gained by scientific study, which I mentioned in a thread elsewhere that the bridge HAS sunk into the substructure.

Where exactly is the Thurne blockage? What does it consist of? If it has now sunk presumably at one time it simply floated about.

Who is right will probably never be known, but all good fun discussing it.

I fail to see the "good fun" where there is this constant need for character assassination.

Makes not the slightest difference what we (the UK) does or doesn't do. The US, China, India, Brazil, all developing nations will continue tipping the balance. We could all sit in mud huts around a single candle for heat and light, won't make a scrap of difference on a global scale. Not saying we shouldn't try, but bankrupting ourselves in a mad rush to deliver a carbon neutral economy makes no sense, to me. BTW, did you see the Ben Fogle episode a few weeks back, where he went to Siberia? Now that's worrying! If the perma frost melts and releases all the carbon presently locked into it, as the researcher says "We're up s**t creek without a paddle". Happy days. :default_biggrin:

    Yep, agree with that Regulo.

Climate change and pollution. The former is for us all. Pollution, depends where you live I suppose. Certainley there is pollution on the broads. Now, that is something we can make a difference.

As I understand it cultural heritage is variable and specific to individual areas, therefore as the Broads area as encompassed by the Broads Authority is almost entirely tidal waterways and associated waters created by peat digging the cultural heritage of the Broads going back to Anglo Saxon times is deeply founded around navigation  and the opportunities that provided, this would appear to be confirmed by the legal requirement for the authority to maintain the navigation as a prime function of its duties alongside its other responsibilities not subservient to them as may be the case elsewhere with different designations, as such I cant see any justification to re-define the Broads just to fit them within a new vision.

    Fred

I certainly agree with your post Fred. In fact I seem to be inundated with vision, of other people. A press release every other day throughout all of the media . Global Warming, climate change, pollution, vehicles that will run on hot air it would seem. Stop eating meat as animals flatulate. They will be after us next.  Any suggestions?

Sorry. this is not really for those that do not remember the years before computers/mobiles.

After today, endless scam calls etc, I realised I miss the times when you could slam the corded phone down on anybody who was annoying you.

It didn't make any difference BUT it sure felt satisfying compared to pressing the end call button.

Age give away time, using the ashes from the fire grate on the snow on the path outside.

Anything, anybody misses from the days of yore?

    paul

Thank you Paul. A good post, a refreshingly positive post, to be able to reflect on the good old days.

The Broads. For better or worse.

Please do NOT use my post as a vehicle to have a pop at the BA I'm getting a bit tired of that.

The river Commisioner, what wonderful gentlemen in their caps and uniforms. The bird life we took for granted. The holiday makers who contributed so much to the Norfolk Broads. The vibrant forums of history, holiday tales, help and advice. Fishing tales, walks on the river banks. Sailing, that dreadful  outboard, rowing, children in the lug sail dinghy .

.One could go on and on. I would prefer that.

I want to ‘like’ ‘sad’ and ‘thanks’ that post but I can’t do all three! Which is most important? I’m really not sure but probably the ‘sad’ reaction comes out top. We have indeed lost a very knowledgeable and interesting member from the forum and I do hope Vaughan will reconsider.

ChrisB has also stated that he is somewhat disillusioned with the forum and will be giving it a "rest".

We cannot afford to haemorrhage these valuable contributers.

The issue needs to be addressed. But having said that I have no idea as to how we go about it.

We should not be encouraging people to blank certain topics.  The heading of the section should be sufficient to encourage our members to visit that particular subject or ignore it. We should not have to jump through hoops to achieve our individual preferences.

"Knitting on your boat", would not entice my attention. I simply would not visit. The many rivers of Norwich and their tributaries would. (You can see the passage of one albeit in tiles in the centre of Norwich)

We have a very small number of Bellweathers on this forum. Knowledgeable people, articulate. I enjoy their contributions very much, I enjoy their banter and their ability state their views so easily and quickly. What I am fearful of is the the way in which they tend to monopolise a subject............endlessly.

But tell me. Out of all our members, indeed out of all our visitors and I would dearly like to know how many, and I believe that they are known, why are so few people contributing?

Take Davos, climate change. Is this not important? Does it not effect the Broads. How about Sandford by default.......lack of dredging, boats designed to be Yare boats or Bure boats basically. They cannot go anywhere else. How does this effect the economy, the lack of investment indeed the decline of othe areas of the broads. Health and Safety on the Broads. Pollution on the Broads. I am given to understand from MM (not that one the other one) that bookings were down last year..........why?

WHY are these matters not being discussed. What should we be trying to achieve and what could we achieve to broaden (do you like that) our overall position in the Norfolk Broads and influence of those in "Authority"  that we do have a concern

I had seen that post, but he was reacting to a post which had a big grinning smiley attached to it, so hardly anything to get upset about, I would have thought. But he'll be a loss to the forum, if that is the case.

I have been in contact with Vaughan. I can confirm that he has left the forum. We have lost a valuable and important member. To be clear, he is a friend, we lived in the same village. We both came from boat yards, boat families, Hearts Cruisers, and Jenners, of Thorpe St Andrew.

We did not always agree, but never, ever fell out over it. It is called respect and consideration.

Perhaps one of our most important of the TOS
