  1. Totally agree Breydon. Has anyone tried to buy a ham or beef sandwich in a pub recently? I like a traditional sandwich with a little garnish if travelling. I don't want half a metre of bagette and a bucket of chips.
  2. I, running with the tide, and against a half gale and with a slightly too big outboard accelerating hard got everthing just right or wrong and "Donald Campbell" ed one. Very sobering seeing whole boat pass over your head, the 5 gallon fuel tank falling would have done for me if it had got me. Treated it with a lot more respect after.
  3. Where did my favourite food of the sixties and seventies go. Prawn Cocktail, Avacado and prawns, smoked salmon and smoked trout to start. Escolope of veal cordon blue, Tournados Rossini, Dover Sole, Rib of beef. Veal or chicken in Marsala or a proper chef prepared Kiev made from a whole breast, not some reconstituted rubbish. And to follow a Black forest gateaux, cheesecake or fresh fruit soaked in Kirsh. Made in house and not shipped in from a Food Services company. Being on my own I do not eat out nearly as much as many folk but when I do, I want it good and within reason am not worried about price. However more and more I am disappointed. I had dinner three weeks ago at an establishment in "The Bunch" it was rubbish. Not so much the food, that was average but they had booked in a big party of about twenty. They were totally out of their depth with not enough staff who were also trying to serve in the bar, waste of money.
  4. Hi Lucy, Your boat was built in my old stomping ground of Chichester Harbour. The vast majority of Dell Quay Dorys were just that, open dorys. I seem to remember that when they introduced the cuddy like yours they named it The Fisherman. I wish you many happy hours afloat.
  5. Those props are each pushing water over those rudders powered by 500bhp engines. Make the rudders large and they would get ripped out. Look at the size of that stern thruster, no need for rudders berthing. And you always have one ahead one astern at your disposal. Many modern boats of the size of Robin's boat don't have rudders the propulsion swivels like an outboard beneath the waterline.

That is because they don't bl**dy well listen! Have you tried explaining how you want a job done, damn nigh immpossible.
  7. I sailed on Norada from How Hill to Stalham. As we stormed across Barton and were a bit early we went up past Hunsett to a turning hole and then retraced our course. Beautiful day but were hit with rainy squalls as we entered Stalham Dyke. Norada will be at The Museum of the Broads over this Heritage Weekend and then return to How Hill. On Thursday I will be aboard when she returns to Barton House at Wroxham, with Ludham Bridge to pass under then all the way to Wroxham it promises to be a long day!
  8. Did the purchase by NYA of the Alphacaft site and renaming to Langford Harbour go through? Also there was talk of boat building resuming.
  9. I have edited and written a little more because my phone rang!
  10. It is Blakeney. Just follow the sea wall path at the eastern end of the quay (opp the public loos) you can make it into a fairly long circular walk if you so wish. The hard is NT and costs to park but if you park in the village hall it is free. Blakeney is really nice and worth a visit. Plenty of eating and drinking places from burger and sea food stalls in season to up market, I like the Kings Arms Pub, food good at a very reasonable price and their chips are excellent. In season the quay is busy-ish but walk out on the marsh and it is beautiful. If you follow the path at the West end of the Quay you come to Morston Quay which is also very worth a visit.
  11. I took a day off from preparing my over large garden for Winter. A beautiful day for a walk on the salt marsh. Sun shining but a cooling breeze off the sea.
  12. I recon you have done it FTM. Many Many thanks. Though how it came to be in the family button box that goes back to Victorian times wiil, I fear, forever remain a mystery. Brill detective work by all concerned. Many many thanks.
  13. I tend to agree, but if someone says something like " Gigantic Portions " I do take note. I absolutely hate a mountain of food infront of me, however well cooked, my hunger just vanishes. So "Monster Portion" establishments do not get my business. I love that establishment in Horstead. But only eat a main course. Starter and main is too much so I go for a main. Often Dover Sole plus a sorbet to follow if available.
  14. The Maritime Festival is long, thin and crowded being along the quay, not a place to be this year for you even if you were in your chair. There is always next year.
  15. I would also have loved to come butare tain a wherry to Staham Staithe on the 7th then back home to Wroxham on the 13th.
  16. That boat has a big up top sundeck. I hope nobody was on it.
  17. Sounds to be one of the best projects for Broadland for years. I hope it all goes really well for you.
  18. Good luck, hope all goes to plan.
  19. Just goes to show. I was told Derek lost his lower ear to a horse bite.
  20. I had my weight on a No7 Barton block for years. But to make it work well I had a swivel between the shackle on the weight and the block. I also found braided rope worked better with the block. There is a picture of mine in things for sail under ground tackle. Long sold now.
  21. In addition to the annual open day a number of Ranger guided nature walks are available at Heigham Holmes.
  22. Sounds like with a wad of cash you design and build just within the rules, mop up all the silver in your launch year and then are handicapped out of contention thereafter. I ended my short love affair with Merlins in similar circumstances. It got to the point that you needed a new hull every year. In four short years my Merlin that actually looked like a boat was up against things that looked like flying saucers and had no chance.
  23. What class does the yacht Stella represent?
  24. Very sensible, yes the pelistors have a life of 10 years but these, like other detectors be they optical or ionisation smoke detectors can be effected by the environment they are in. Boat interiors are a pretty harsh environment, they have large temp. Changes causing condensation and cooking especially frying in such a confined space can cause ingress of dirt. As you say the cost is not huge for peace of mind. Spiders and thripps can also be a pain where ionisation detectors are fitted.
