We love Sutton Staithe. Such a peaceful place to moor and the pub is worth a visit too. We moored there 3 times last year, twice on the green next to "live aboards".  Ok, so the boats may look a bit battered and bruised but those on board have always been pleasant enough.....no problems encountered whatsoever.

As someone who also visits Sutton from time to time, I couldn’t agree more with this. I can see why some of the comments on this post would deter visitors to Sutton but the moorings on the green are not the only ones. There is a long section as you approach the green - what’s wrong with those? Still access to the Sutton Staithe Hotel.
The vast majority of liveaboards on the Broads are very pleasant people, just a pity that one or two tarnish the rest and cause some boaters to be wary of them all. I wish the BA would/could act with the authority they’re supposed to have and sort something out for them. Having said that, there are always those who either don’t want or refuse to be helped.

Yet another email from Hoseasons today. I don't seem to remember this amount in previous years.

    They’re getting desperate! 😉

  3. I know there are a lot of people who ‘don’t do’ Facebook for one reason or another, however, the landowner has partly explained what is to happen at Langley. There are eight moorings, four upstream limited to 32ft and four downstream limited to 40ft. These are being named after the eight surviving wherries so I would imagine they will be clearly marked. If there is clear signage that they are ‘private’ bookable moorings I would hope there would not be too much hassle. The landowner has said that the booking system can be adapted as necessary.
I’m glad Langley has not been lost to boaters and, personally, I don’t think the proposed charges are particularly onerous. If you don’t want to pay, don’t stop there.

We tried Chedgrave Common once, but a group of teenagers arrived with a picnic (largely alcoholic) and started having a party,

A common occurrence at Chedgrave during the summer unfortunately. The same thing happens at the Dutch Tea Gardens in Oulton Dyke, particularly at weekends. The BA hasn’t helped by installing a nice bench for them to sit on.

The difficulty with wild mooring comes if you have a dog or dogs. Many of the nicest wild spots have very little access to land.

Personally, the traffic is so light on the southern rivers now that none of the BA moorings get really busy for the majority of the time,

I think that sums it up nicely.

  5. I have two replacement hips and one replacement knee, the latter done only four years ago when I was 71. As long as you follow all the rules, look after and constantly exercise the joints as instructed, all will be good. Clambering on and off a boat is a good stretching exercise - within reason of course!

I suspect the relatively low value of a stolen lifejacket vs the aggravation of breaking in would probably be deterrent enough.

Unfortunately for some it’s not aggravation it’s the kick they get out of it - literally!

  7. I’ve only just caught up with your drama Kate, thank goodness it all turned out ok and you're relatively unharmed. Just shows how important LJs really are. It’s only in the last five years or so I’ve taken to wearing mine when on deck and mooring up etc. Realising I’m nowhere near as mobile as I once was, I don’t feel properly dressed without it now!
Glad you’re ok after your experience.

Bit confused that the max party is 6 where the transom decal says 8.

I’ve always understood that the number on the transom is the maximum number of passengers allowed on the vessel. Presumably the max party is the number of ‘sleepers’ allowed in the hire party. That may all be a load of twaddle of course, no doubt someone will confirm.

For anyone local and interested, Salhouse Broad is holding a night sky viewing evening event on Monday night. I was thinking of booking a ticket, but think the forecast isn’t good. If the forecast changes, I’ll go. Mooring fee is refunded if you book a ticket.

    If it’s this one - https://www.salhousebroad.org.uk/stargazing.html

It’s tomorrow. Hot food included in the price too!

Sorry late to the post but can I just ask,   the Morrisons mooring in Norwich,  how far is the Morrisons from there.    Our old legs dont walk too far these days.    Is it obvious that it is a mooring?

As grendel said, it’s really not far. I use it fairly regularly, wheel the trolley back to the boat and, while I stash things away, my husband walks the trolley back. It’s a bit shaky on the cobbley bits but no real problem.
The mooring is just before the NoviSad white bridge almost in front of a block of flats. Definitely recommended as long as the free mooring lasts. Incidentally there are other shops there too - Boots, Matalan, B&M to name a few.
