  1. Very wise words from Gretzky above. If you do get hit by someone who drives off, get the boat details, try and get an independent witness and report the incident immediately to the hire boat yard (if appropriate) and the BA. If you are the cause of damage to another boat, do the decent thing and take responsibility.
  2. I was going to pick off bits of ECIPA’s post and make comments but I find I would be quoting almost all of it anyway. I couldn’t agree more with the post and find it incredibly sad that we cannot coordinate recycling across the UK. As for recyclable waste going thousands of miles to be dumped, well that just beggars belief! Am I surprised though? No, not really. It seems local authorities (including those that call themselves an Authority) will bend and manipulate the rules in any way they see fit to make themselves look good. It’s a good thing that the truth eventually comes out - as long as something is then done about it. But I won’t hold my breath!
  3. Thanks for that information ECIPA, one I shall look out for.
  4. I think Tesco’s have cottoned on to the fact that customers are beginning to favour loose veggies over pre-packed. Previously, loose stuff was marginally cheaper if not the same price. I have also found recently that farm shops have increased their prices, many no longer seem such good value.
  5. I certainly wasn’t suggesting you did (or indeed would do) any of those things Cap’n and I can’t imagine you ever being distracted by anything!
  6. Not funny at all - I know which I would rather be doing! Try drinking a beer, taking a few photos and waving to everyone who passes by from behind a car steering wheel.
  7. I think this is one of the most calming and tranquil pictures I have seen for a while Cap’n Jay, worthy of a nice frame. Calendar material definitely!
  8. That’s just how I like to see Somerleyton moorings! Bet it’s a bit different this weekend though. Looking forward to more tales Cap’n Jay.
  9. I think he used to move it quite regularly, usually a short distance up or downstream. It’s been on the upper reaches of the Ant for a couple of years now. If it’s not interfering with navigation, I guess it will now remain where it is until it either starts breaking up or the BA decides it has to be moved. Be something for all the Richardson’s clients coming out to take photos of!
  10. It’s these sort of mishaps that serve to remind us, we’re all guilty at one time or another. Glad the dogs were ok and you’re on the mend Jono.
  11. Jono - did you have both dogs in one hand in their LJs or one in each hand?
  12. I’ve always been told by a friend from Norfolk that it is Po’erham - or something like that anyway!
  13. That is indeed a sad tale, poor you! We have to carry one of our dogs off and it always worries me that something like that could so easily happen. Have you been able to identify exactly where it all went wrong? A slip or did your leg just buckle under you? I hope it won’t put you off and it will be third trip lucky. Get well soon.
  14. We hired Royall Stuart back in 2005 I think it was but it was a double in the aft cabin, did they change it?
  15. No, it’s awful. I do advise people to stay clear of that mooring. The undercurrents are terrible, scary monsters appear overnight and the church is haunted.

I’m sure there will always be the exception, a privately rented mooring would have a lot more going for it in that respect. If there are others able to do so (and are willing), perhaps there could be some sort of register for members on this forum?

This topic has been discussed many times and it’s generally considered to be a ‘no-no’ for a variety of reasons. I can’t remember when the last discussion was but I expect someone can.

BridgeStones do takeaway fish and chips - what more could you want? ...........

HW are now charging £20 for overnight for private boats.
  20. Now that I reckon is a proper traditional FEB. Nowadays it would be called a heart attack on a plate but I know my ancestors would have enjoyed such a breakfast quite regularly. Particularly my grandfather who ate like a horse but worked like a Trojan and remained slim all his life, even in retirement.
  21. Now now boys, I’m sure we could manage a compromise. Cap’n Jay can have breakfast and Mr and Mrs Nog are on the list for supper so no worries. I guess I’ll have to organise a marquee for a day and have a ‘cook-in’! Breakfast followed by an all day bbq followed by a 3 course supper. BYO booze or whatever. Now, where to hold this extravaganza?...................
  22. Agreed. That’s one of the sad things about getting older, so often the appetite decreases. For me, one of the nicest things about cooking on a boat (breakfast or whatever) is that you can serve up as much as you want and it seems much nicer being eaten in the open air rather than ‘indoors’.
  23. I don’t think we have ever had a situation where we have misunderstood the guidance from a sailie as to which side they want us to pass. Probably mainly because we have a fair idea anyway having learnt over many years what is likely to happen. But, there is no set way (as far as I know) of giving that sort of guidance or direction and that makes me wonder how often directions are misunderstood, particularly by newbie cruiser hirers. I am sure there must be guidance in the Skipper’s Manual but I am not convinced that gets read as quickly as it should. We tend to take note of when various races etc are taking place (thanks to the very useful Green Book) and always endeavour to avoid those areas and times if we can. One day last year we did time it a bit wrong and caught the tale end of a race. We hung back purposely as the yachts were almost at Horning SC but another private boat barged on through and got into a frightful mess amongst a load of tacking yachts!
  24. Nor do I - that certainly didn’t come out quite as I meant it! My apologies. What I was trying to say is that I sometimes get the impression that some sailies appear to think that stinky helms lack common sense. Horses for courses, it happens the other way round too I know. As Wyndham quoted above ‘it’s the way it is and always will be’.
