  1. Hello All, Growing up in London, l'd never heard of the Norfolk Broads. l knew where Norfolk and Suffolk were on the map, but didn't realise there was so much water covering so much area in those combined Counties. l was 10 when we were told we were going on a boat [instead of the usual caravan] for our holidays, and from that holiday, the whole family were forever hooked on the Broads. l enjoy the discussions that go on on this forum, and have learnt so much about the place from those living around the Broads, or who spend a lot of time there. Most of the time it's done in a friendly way, but if there's something l'm not really interested in, or that goes over my head, l just go onto the next subject. What might be boring for me, is interesting for many others. As far as l'm concerned, l don't mind if people do keep bringing up the same subject, that's the freedom of this forum. Maybe the silent majority feel the same way. l know this is going of on a tangent, but as for teaching children, [maybe it's got something to do with being older in the tooth] it seems that youngsters today are easily being brainwashed in the classrooms on all sorts of things. A couple of examples: friends of ours' 8 year old grandchild has decided to stop eating meat because their teacher has 'discussed' the vegetarian subject with the class. Our granddaughter was telling us about her geography lesson and about the Malvinas. When l tried to correct her, she was insistant that it wasn't the Falklands, it was the Malvinas and that it was part of Argentina. The Broads has a long history, why try to rewrite/rebrand it? A couple of times when we've been on holiday, we've seen boats with small children and teachers on Barton Broad, with their clipboards, so some children are being taught . . . but is it about the N*t**n*l P**k?!!!
  2. Hello All, Just reading these memories reminds us that in our small Island, there can't be many families who haven't had relatives who have taken part in WW1, WW2, and every theatre since. There must be millions of these stories out there that haven't been heard, because, as has been said here, those involved didn't want to or couldn't talk about their experiences, and all of them so very different. The contributions and sacrifices that have been made by the 'ordinary' people through the years for Our Country and the World must never be forgotten. The younger generations are being reminded through their schools as well as at home [hopefully] and always show interest in finding out more. There's a lot of support now for the families of those who have given their lives, and those who have, and continue to suffer mental and physical injury and their families also get support. Quite rightly so, but things were so different for those involved in the World Wars. Not sure if my words come over as they are meant. l too have stories of my relatives who have been involved in past conflicts. We will remember them.
  3. Hello All, Unfortunately, all types of scams are still occurring all the time, and people are still getting caught. We like to think that we are still savvy enough to spot one if it were to happen to us. But in this instance, for a lot of people [us included] new technology goes right over our heads. l wouldn't have a clue, or even be interested, as to how to set up a contract etc, and for those older than us it can be more confusing. A £5 a month pay-as-you-go phone is good enough for me!
  4. Hello All, This is a different kind of phone scam to the recently reported one. This has happened, and this is how it works. Someone using your name, address and phone number, sets up a BT account requesting a new phone to be sent to them. lt's a top of the range £600 version. lt arrives, and about two hours later, someone saying they're from BT calls saying they're sending a courier to collect it as a mistake has been made. They arrive [obviously not from BT], and take the phone. You are then left with no phone but as far as BT are concerned, it's been a genuine request, they have supplied the phone and you are on a monthly contract for £55. You are then left trying to explain to BT what has happened to their expensive phone. lf this happens to you, refuse to hand it over to the courier, contact BT and report it to the police. BT will make arrangements to have the phone returned to them.
  5. Hello Boatingman, That sounds about right, the pictures didn't show any houses. They make a big difference. l can't remember how long ago Pearsons folded, but it would be interesting to know what the property and land would have gone for back then!
  6. Sorry boatingman, l meant to thank you for the info. Must have been a bit of interest looking at the difference between the guide price and what it went for.
  7. Hello Baitrunner, Yes it was.
  8. Hello All, Saw in the EDP a few weeks ago that the Pearsons Boat Yard was coming up for auction on the 21st july: Former boatyard, outbuildings and storage, and extensive river frontage and dyke. Guide: £150,000-£180,000. Has anyone heard anything?
  9. Many thanks Wildfuzz, BroadScot and Jonzo. lnfo stored!
  10. Hello All, l'm sure l've seen on NBN a little while ago, someone gave a number that can be used in an emergency when there's no phone-signal, could anyone help please. Thanks.
  11. Hello jeffbroadslover, That was the thinking in my previous post. There's a lot of scope for improving Horizons Yard, which inturn would make a bit more room up at Stalham. Re the planning for building a new holiday let in the yard, will it not be in a bit of a funny place? lt's not exactly ideal being close to a busy road and back a bit from the river. But then again there are so many different types of holiday lets around the Broads when you think about it.
  12. Hello All, ls it possible, bearing in mind the increase in boat numbers at Horizon, that they maybe thinking of expanding the Acle boatyard? Certainly have the space to do some digging.
  13. Hello All, I was told by a butcher that some of the rabbit that's sold comes from China, and the way they are reared out there is not so good. British rabbit is usually a bit dearer, but much tastier imho, and the best tasting is wild rabbit, if you can get it. Don't know if it's a true one, but when younger l remember being told a story from around the time of WW1 about a mum being given a freshly caught wild rabbit. A little while after she had put it in the oven, it exploded. Turns out the rabbit had been caught near an ammunitions factory and had been feeding on the contaminated grass!
  14. Hello Bob48, Thanks for making that clear. Thought it was funny there'd not been any further comments about it. Perhaps l'd read that item with my glasses on back to front!
  15. Hello All, Sounds like a nice lazy holiday, as it should be! Just one point, didn't someone put on here a couple of weeks ago that Richo's are now paying for the Wroxham pilot? There was a board outside, l think, saying something about you pay and they reimburse you when you get back if you use him.
