Some brands get a good deal (if they have low call-out rates). I used to get breakdown cover free with a service on my Honda.

We still get free AA cover with main dealer service on our Chinese MG’s, plus a 7 year transferable warranty. 🤔. So I guess Clarkson and May got it  partly right back in 2012 on TG?

My experience is that they are highly unpredictable. Unlike a cycle on the highway which has to keep to a defined set of rules.

They pop out between moored boats, cut corners and cruise on the wrong side. And in one case on The Ant, at night

once again, the water is seen as a safe environment where as the highway is seen as a killer

it’s all about context, when you think you’re safe, that’s when trouble starts

Is that paddle boards or sailing boats 🤪🤣

True but unacceptable  to speed, just a bit of forward  planning.

Again I fully agree, however I guess some folks just don’t know this, nor do they realise, that in reality when you work it out the time saved is pretty much nothing.

Surly easy.Your on holiday, stick to the speed limit. You don't have to rush.Enjoy the river and the broads. So what if there's no space at yhe pub.Have a drink  on board.Even if your fly jets.Relax  it's not a race.

Fully agree, however the way things appear to be going, no worries about mooring at the pubs, you can all keep that, it’s the remaining moorings that appear to be in decline. Especially I guess for those who need access to the land, for some I guess this can add a whole heap of stress to get we’re they need to as quickly as possible, to make sure they get there before the rest. Praise be the mud weights… the best stress relief/plan B going 👍

Longer and wider, probably not, bearing in mind the restrictions on length and beam imposed by the BA in 1991.  Indeed, if I remember correctly, there were a couple of Alpha bathtubs built 50ft in length in the late 80’s.  Caribbeans, Bermudas, Bounty bathtubs and many more craft have been built with a beam of 12ft since the 60’s, they’re nothing new.  The airdraft may be a factor, though, restricting access to areas above several bridges may impact the volume of craft contained within a navigable area, but there are far fewer hirecraft than before and far fewer available moorings as a consequence.

In the days when there were far more hire yards, was it not permitted to moor in their yards, as it is now, when in a hire craft?   Could that be a contributory factor in the dearth of available moorings?

    It’s the ratio that’s different.

Unfortunately this could be another valuable mooring partly lost to bigger cruisers I can’t see why this mooring can’t be a stern on mooring as further down the river at the new in its stern on mooring if this was implemented then there would be more room for all types of boats.

Looking at BA mooring on the whole of the broads there seems to be plenty above wroxham bridge which a lot of this year have been fairly empty as many boats can’t get under the bridge I think the BA really need to look at making some more mooring elsewhere on the broads but with pontoons as surely they are cheaper to maintain ?

I agree adding pontoon moorings, but the push towards longer, wider and taller boats, that can’t on a lot of occasions navigate some bridges, this has the effect of condensing these boats that soon fill up moorings in to specific available areas. Maybe some of the yards also need to consider the size and height of their boats, vs mooring options 🤔

  7. We were up from Wednesday to Sunday. After getting drenched 3 times, and the thought of this weekends weather stuck on the boat, we packed up and came home toady. (Friday midday, leaving before more forecasted rain and the high winds over the weekend).

    Where has summer gone?

    cheers

I had an interesting conversation with my son in law while he was driving the boat. As we came up towards Richardson’s where the river splits to go to Stalham staithe, he was within the speed limit according to his GPS. I asked that when he forked left he slowed down as some berth holders were saying some boats go too fast. I was surprised that his reaction was ‘ I’m within the speed limit so if people are affected, they need to ask the authorities to reduce the speed limit’.
I replied that we could just reduce our speed ourselves to be polite, but he didn’t get that. He was doing nothing wrong, but I was surprised by the point of view that it’s within the rule so it’s ok, rather than thinking of others as well.

Maybe not just an age thing? I was always told when passing moored craft especially in areas were there are lost of boats, mariners, yards and built up areas, not to create more wash that could rock a dingy.

  9. How about a “SPEED: dead slow beyond this point” sign? That gets around the speed limits issue. No one really knows what 3mph or any other speed really is on a boat anyway, as it is just not relative to some, the ones that get it right check their wash, the minority just don’t care and nothing will reach them anyway, unless you get you own back a pour your dinner over them to see how they like it. Instead of speed limits, wash hight 🌊 signs would probably be more effective or both?

    kind regards

  10. If you can get some of the bubble wrap that is covered in foil used for insulation, a roll or two used to cover your cabin windows during the day when the sun is out during hot days, makes for keeping the cabin much cooler. 👍🏻

  11. Hello James 👋

That doesn’t seem to be a too bad price, I guess that includes the Vague Addition to the Total? (VAT)?

Some of the less accessible moorings (for some) above those bridges can sometimes offer some lower cost options, it’s worth having a look through the different yards to see what they can offer, and of course if you’re happy and able to pass the bridge/s? If you can it can also be beneficial to arrange a look around the moorings to compare with what you have vs what may be saved.

    Happy hunting

    Kind regards

    Paul

  12. DG signs (they have a web site not sure how to add the link), did our boat names. These were placed onto marine grade brushed alloy. They do many types of signage, boat and vehicle graphics for all sorts of applications and marinas in and around Suffolk, and surrounding areas. They will set up, print or cut from different types of materials, and also arrange to post out if required. These are industrial strength decals/graphics and will last for a very long time. When visiting them they were preparing the graphics for a Sunseeker which included a boot topper, I was surprised by this that a graphic would be used here, however they advised the vinyl they use would last much longer than any paint without fading etc and could be more easily removed without damaging the gel if ever a colour change etc. Was required. It got me thinking about this during the next lift out 🤔. Worth a look. 👍🏻

The signs say funds will be used for the upkeep and maintenance of the site, I wonder what the costs are that are already charged to the tolls and where any surplus will be spent.

The BA will of course give us all a reduction on next seasons boat toll with all the extra revenue gained, they are non profit making so they will have to “loose” it somewhere. 😂

It sounds to me as though you have one of the older Jabsco pumps with two grease caps on the pump shaft and driven by a belt?  On a BMC 1.5 engine I assume?

Yes it is installed on to a 1.8 BMC. 😊

    Bowman heat exchangers

It’s got a Bowman heat exchanger. It’s well aligned and the belt looks to be as you mention. 👍🏻. Looks a little loose but runs well etc.

There has always been a slight weep from the pumps shaft at times, I was thinking of changing over to one of the sealed pumps, I think Johnson do one that is almost a straight replacement, may need to enlarge the diameter of the pulls or replace it? All sounds great but have learnt for one reason or another, nothing that done on a boat is easy, even when it should be. 🤔😜😂

Will have to have a look next time. 👍🏻

    Cheers Paul.

  15. That’s got me thinking 🤔. Bought our boat back in 2010. Had the raw water pump on the list of things to change as the old one, (still installed) would need packing out and one of the old type grease glands had it’s treads stripped. Engine servicing is regularly carried out each year, however I have never changed the raw water impeller or removed it. There’s always a good flow of water out of the exhaust, so never really felt the need to fiddle with it? (The impeller). We have a spare on board if ever needed. In some 40 or so years of boating it’s not something I have ever paid too much attention to as long as there is a good flow?

I think I will add it to the list of de-winterisation updates as 12 years may be pushing it? 😜

To be fair it’s not something it have ever heard of folks doing?

    The 75 never had a name 🤪

The MGZT I had for quite some years was called MGFred named by my son when he was 5. Had that for a number of years treating myself to a Jag XF. Replaced this with my Dads old 75 estate. Now with some new MGs and the other half’s 500c, the only two cars there’s ever been an attachment with were the 75 and the ZT, also I think these were the better card given their ages and miles put on them. The 75 2002 went to a new home just last week, still find myself looking at the space on the driveway with fond memories 🤪

A tart just has a bottom ie: Bakewell tart.Jam,almond paste iced topping and cherries.A Chicken pie or mince pie,has a pastry base and a lid.

So what about one of those pies where you get the filling in a small casserole bowl with pastry on top? Is that still classified as a pie?

I think some of the facts are a little inaccurate, but it's a fair point.

The trouble is that with combustion engines, 70% of the energy in the fuel is thrown away as heat.

Fuel cells powering what is otherwise an electric vehicle are massively more efficient - But producing hydrogen uses lots of energy and there are now only 11 filling stations left in the UK.

Vast amounts of energy are also used in refining oil products.

    It's problematic every way :(

We all know the answer….Dilithium crystals it’s so obvious 🤔

If there is a shortage of these get hold of a flux capacitor and send everything back to the future 👍

Think we will be stuck with Dino go-juice for a while as yet.

Sadly the early registration numbers don't follow build dates. I have A839 on a boat that was probably originally B72. A839 being a number issued to a boatyard that rebuilt her back in the day.

Another boat carries an 'F' registration that was issued when it was refitted in the 70's but was originally a 'W' number. That original 'W' number is now on a different wooden boat that was built at the boatyard nextdoor to where mine originated!

Some yards seemed to have had blocks of numbers which they used as boats were completed whereas other builders just registered individually.

Up until just a few years ago the BA had a complete set of records for all the registrations but, in their wisdom, they deleted the lot when the new GDPR rules started to come in. Before then you could ask for the complete history of your boat just like DVLA once offered for your car.

The penny has just dropped, so you are currently looking after 5x5. I thought her disappearance in the past meant she may have ended up somewhere else 💨 .Pleased to hear she didn’t go that way,  like so many around that time. 👍
