  1. I'm just on my way back from the Broads having had a great time. I have to say that having bow thrusters would have made life a lot easier trying to moor up the Brinks emperor (46 ft) stern on at ranworth as even with an experienced helmsman, it took 20 minutes...
  2. Well, having a great time so far... Moored up at ranworth and having dinner at the Maltsters:)
  3. Thanks all. I've spoken to the best man and he's hired a couple of sailing dinghies for the weekend from Barnes brinkcraft where we are getting the cruiser from.
  4. Wow, that's some database - just been having a flick through!
  5. sadly, there's next to no chance of getting to Hickling - the great bathtub that's been hired won't get under the bridge at Potter Heigham... jenny, is that at the bridge or Womack?
  6. Let's hope the weather stays as good! I know the best man is hoping to hire a few sailing dinghies for the Saturday - we are starting in Wroxham - does anywhere local hire these for the day? (most I have seen are day cruisers or just rowing boats!)
  7. Hi Alan, I'll definitely try to pop some pictures up! Never been to the broads in Autumn - just hope this fine weather continues...
  8. That's the one - it's inaccessible by road, so it's boat or footpath to get there!
  9. Hi all, a group of us are taking the Brinks Emperor for a spin at the end of next week. Is it as bad as many of the reviews make out? I'm not too bothered as it's only for a few nights; my memory is of pretty simple living in the 90s in Herbert Woods boats - Searching Light / Flash of Light... In fact, emperor looks distinctly like them - is it a rebadged HW boat?
  10. Thanks Deebee - of course, what goes on Stag stays on Stag and all that I've put a few pics up of scouting times in the photos section - I'll try and get some more up soon!
  11. Soundings - I don't know the pub (I recognise the name as there's a railway station of that name isn't there?) - my guess is that they will appeal and I'm not sure that the appeal will be dismissed - it looks pretty isolated. The only way it could stay open is if it's a seasonal pub, such as the one at Turf Locks on the Exeter canal near powderham..,
  12. Hi all, I was a member of the scout group at Christ's Hospital and from the mid 70s until around 2004, the troop used to sail every Easter around the Northern Broads... I was there 94-99 and I came back in either 2001 or 2002 to help... here are some pics that my old scout master has taken - when I can scan some of my pics, I'll add some more! These were good times! the fleet at Gay's Staithe in 97 Spindrift (the upturned bathtub on Barton) The the fleet at Salhouse Tempest on Barton Scouts' own at Gay's staithe - I think that's me in the grey sweatshirt sitting on the boat! We did sometimes have some interesting weather at Easter - this was an interesting journey from ranworth to Wroxham in 95 I think...
  13. Splendid - will keep an eye out for you... Now, all I have to do is remember those knots...
  14. I've never gone further north than Potter bridge - we used to get the boats under Wroxham except for one year when the water was too high!
  15. Hi, thanks for the welcome... poor old Spindrift - we always had a soft spot for them (they were known as the bathtubs!) We used to love mooring up at Gay's staithe and rowing to Neatishead... we confused quite a few people at Gay's staithe, as that's where we often had our 'Scout's Own' - the school chaplain used to look after one of the cruisers and we'd have a service on the staithe having temporarily 'purloined' some service books from the church down the Ant!
  16. As as a planner, I hope they don't appeal this!
  17. Hi all, I'm returning back to the broads on Friday for a long weekend (yes, it's a stag do but we are a civilised bunch...) we are on Brinks Emperor (looks like a bit of a beast of some vintage!) anyway, in the 90s, I was in my school scout troop and we used to go up to the Broads every Easter and hire cruisers from Herbert Woods (either Searching Lights or Flash of Lights - what happened to those?) The venture scouts would have yachts from Upton - Typhoon, Tempest (fine boats), Dawn Wind & Fair Wind... I see they are still for hire - but what happened to the Spindrifts? Anyway, if you see Brinks Emperor next weekend, wave and say hi :)
