Hi everyone, Just to add a note from a pub landlord perspective . I have the Canary and Linnet near Derham and touch wood have not seen to many problems as yet. I took a delivery of gas on Monday as usual. Talking to the Delivery company they stated this happens every year . This year however, the press have published it and made it worse and the usual panic buys have kicked in.They also inform me that a new UK plant is due to come online over the coming weeks so should help the problem.So there you have it Keep Calm, dont panic and carry on

Thank you everyone for your input and thoughts. My personal preference is North. We run a pub so getting away is the odd day here and there or weekend. I feel the North side gives me greater options, but i do enjoy the South with its quieter rivers and miss going down there. After a few enquiries it would appear that mooring costs are around the same too, so not much to be gained there either. I agree also I have been hit more times in the South , and harder too, The tides catch so many hire crews out. As for Reedham haven't been there for a year or two, but always found the Ranger to be helpful. I am still giving it some thought but the North has it so far Thanks everyone

So we have had Movic moored at Horning Ferry Marina for a number of years now , but we have been considering a move to the South side. Can i just say at this point there is absolutely no problem with ferry marina, in fact i can't praise them enough, they have been excellent through out. Any thoughts on North v South , the positives v negatives, we re really not sure

The pub name actually comes from the two football clubs, Norwich FC and Kings Lynn Fc. We sit exactly halfway between the two. Norwich being " the canaries " and Kings Lynn " the linnets"

Hi everyone Last year i mentioned that Tia and I were taking over the Canary & Linnet in Little Fransham near Dereham. Not exactly a Broads pub I know, but we are on the A47, which many members probably go past us going to and from the Broads. Well six months on and things so far are going well. Hello everyone Just to let you all know that my wife and I will be taking over the Canary & Linnet public house in Little Fransham NR Dereham/Swafham. I know this is not exactly on the Broads , but it is on the A47 which I suspect many use going to and from the broads during the course of the year.. We plan a relaunch of the Menu and a complete new website early in the new year. Pop and see us in the new year. Having spoke to the people who run the cafe, pool and chippy its a case of economics. The pool is in need of repairs of which are considered too expensive to undertake. Plus the events that occurred at the Waveney river center in the summer with the tragic death of the child in the pool has left everyone a little uneasy even though through no fault of the Waveney center, I think was the last straw. The chippy is not making money apparently and spends a lot of time idle so just not viable to keep it going .

My thread wasn't intended to suggest that all poor behavior was reserved just for the Hire fleets. Equally I witnessed some private boats causing all manor of problems with their wash as they pass by. However, I have to say I have never been rammed yet on a mooring by one, but no doubt that day will come too ! These were my experiences over the past two weeks and i tend to agree with Grace that the day boats are the worse culprits of all. Now I love the Broads, every damn part of it, I respect It , and get very frustrated when people do not seem to offer the same level of respect to its environment.I want you to be part of it, share it , enjoy what I enjoy admire its beauty. Day boats are part of that experience too , they are part of the industry that makes the whole experience fascinating and enjoyable. A few however, have " a don,t care less attitude" How can anyone cruise through Horning flat out leaving small boats and sailing boats flying up in the air in their wash and think that,s "OK" is beyond me, but they do Maybe the yards need to take a bit more responsibility for the actions of their customers, be a bit more proactive in getting the message home. As for private boats who act selfish and irresponsible, you deserve everything to be thrown at you.

Moaning time now ........... Ok yes I know its the silly season, but having spent the past two weeks on Movic I found myself spending most of it South as it is so much quieter .Despite my home yard being in Horning I simply cant stand the plague of day boats each day mainly from Wroxham. I accept there are some very responsible day boaters out there, but my god there are many many poor ones who quite simply couldn't careless about the rivers or Broads, probably because they are not coming back. Either they are travelling at brake neck speed, past moored boats or trying to undertake e you again at some inappropriate speed. Yes the BA Ranger sticks out his lollipop to slow them down, but no sooner as they are out of site on goes the throttle again, they might as well stick two fingers up. Maybe on the spot fines or something ? is that possible ? Ever been moored on Salhouse spit before hand back day in Wroxham? You getting shaken from your bed with the boat bouncing on its moorings at 7.30 with the Wroxham fleets returning at silly speeds because they want to get away first ! WELL GO BACK THE NIGHT BEFORE THEN !!!!! Then there is the mooring scramble each day. A point in question was when I managed to moor at the Bridge Inn at Acle. I had managed to moor on the mooring nearest the bridge, between the Arrows and leaving the emergency ladder clear. As Movic is 42ft it meant realistically only a small boat would to able to moor in front us. That didn't appear to deter the 35ft bath tub from Richardson's who decided he was going to moor in front us. Attempt No 1 saw him crash into the side of our boat, much to the embarrassment of his wife holding the mooring line, but absolutely no word of an apology from either. We pushed them off, only for him to turn and come again ! He yet again crashed into our boat. I polity told him he is not going to be able to moor there, but absolutely no response or apology and we pushed them off thinking , foolishly as it turned out , that he would give up. Amazingly he came again, crashed into the side of my boat yet again but this time managed to get a line with himself ashore on the concrete under the bridge, shouting orders at his wife to steer the boat. My patients now was wearing very very thin, but still managed a polite comment and informed him he was unable to moor there. " Who are you the F@@@ mooring Police " he shouted. No I replied you cant moor there as 1. your are outside of the safe mooring area as noted by the bloody great sign with the arrows on 2. you are blocking the emergency ladder which clearly states "keep Clear " 3. and call me picky here, but you have bugger all to moor your boat to ! With that he shot off under the bridge rammed the bank near the shop and somehow managed to moor up his boat. Luckily the fenders had done their job so real damage that I could find anyway Meal in the Bridge and next day and hot foot it across Braydon to South side. So much calmer. Perhaps its me getting old, but river etiquette appears to be getting worse. People get things wrong I accept that, But going flat out through a village or past moored boats is not getting things wrong , its ignorant , simple . Crashing into the same moored boat three times with no apology or accepting advice is again plain ignorant. I am sure the hire yards tell these people how to behave on the river etc, but the message doesn't get through to some and spoiling the experience for many. What the answer is I Don't know, better policing ? God I'm turning into Victor Mlidrew

An interesting topic. Now i have been coming up on the Broads for the past 40 years or so, and yes its changed. I remember the boom years in the 70's & 80's, boats moored 3 deep at Yarmouth and Norwich,and I am sure there was plenty of all male crews then, Indeed I was one of them, but we didn't go charging about abusing people and being rude. But then society as a whole has changed. The pace of life its self has increased. Its look after " No one " attitude now with many folk. Many moorings in the popular locations were often double moored back then. Can you imagine that happening today ! there would riots and all sorts going on. Yes there are a few idiots on the rivers today, but thankfully still in the minority. What annoys me is the lack of respect for the boats and other peoples property. When I hired a boat I treated as if it was my own for the week I had it. I know many many people do the same. Now I have my own boat and its made me very cautious as to where i moor now. Why do they think its acceptable to use my boat as some sort of guide and locating device and bounce down the side into a mooring? Do the hire yards teach them this I wonder ? ( i doubt it ). But then not a word of an apology or at best its a false smile and a some poor attempt at making a Joke out of it! Now I am sure if I drove into the pub car park in a hired JCB , parked beside their car and bounced down the side in doing so they might be a little upset. ,But because its a boat is appears acceptable to them , Why ? Thankfully nothing serious yet that requires a claim to the Hire yard, but I fear its a matter of time. I'm told that can be a nightmare also depending on the yard?

Just watched today's edition of homes under the hammer which featured the old Stracey Arms pub, quite and interesting watch. I think we all knew it was now being used as a Hindu temple, but I have to say now watching the two lovely ladies who are behind the venture it can only be positive. The building was in need of some renovation and already they have spent upwards of £70 k.and still have a long way to go.It is now a charity organisation so hopefully more funds for them. They even talked about offering food to the boats during the summer months. Religious or not I can only wish them well, and perhaps the building will get some much needed love at last. Anyone for a curry '?

Question for the privateers among you. Has many of you ventured beyond the Bishopgate bridge in Norwich Yacht station.? My boats air draft is 6' 6" so height should be much of a problem , or is it ? Many other low bridges maybe ? Indeed is it worth the effort, much to see etc ? How far can you actually go ? Just wondering if i should give it a go or not ? Thanks in advance Mark

Well done Robin, I agree with every thing you have said. I work as a Paramedic with the London Ambulance Service and have attended many calls involving this stuff some with fatal consequences. We now have specialist teams that deals with this type of incident with some people requiring Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which is the same that divers suffering with the " Bends" receive. There is only a few chambers in the country , one being at whipps cross. However the Jury is still out on how effective the treatment really is. We keep hearing that Co monitors etc are not expensive, and they are not. So why do people still not have them. More to the point why are they not mandatory, particularly on hire craft ? All boats on the broads network are subject of a Boat Safety Check . No safety check Cert, no registration ! These should be part of that check. fitted and in working order. Yes people could fit one for the check and then remove it after buy why would they? after all we are not talking hundreds of pounds here. My family and kids lives are not up for debate ! .

So last week I past the old boots, but wait ........they have a new jacket with the words "sex god" on the back and on the other side on a red post a ladies bra ! The mind boggles at what goes on

Some light hearted stuff ........ So as you head to Yarmouth from Acle, you start to encounter the marker posts. Around post 60/61ish there is a couple of old boots nailed to one of the posts. They have been there for absolute years much to the amusement of my children . Often wondered why, and by who. One of lifes' great mysteries

The Lady of the shop tells me that the current owner of the old pub building is a Doctor who has turned it into a temple,Sikh I believe ? . Apparently they meet once a month on a Monday and when he brought the place he had absolutely no idea the river was there !!!!!! What was he looking at ? Various applications were made prior to his purchase, including premier inn, Witherspoon and MacDonald;s all of which were refused planning permission. why who knows. I agree that i would much prefer to pay for a mooring there , than risk it at Acle or Stokesby. Kids love the animals too.

agreed wasn't the best pub in the world. Just a pity someone couldn't make a decent pup/restaurant from it

Spent last weekend up on the Broads and had an overnight at Stracey Arms . Those of you who know the area may have noticed that the shop ,cafe and associated farm animals have been up for sale for the past two years. Every time i visited in the past the lovely lady and owner tells me that this deal and that deal has fallen through. This time however, she tells me the deal is done contracts signed and the new owner takes over in June. The current owner has been there for over 30 years ! I am sure we all would like to wish them well in their retirement. Apparently the new owner is lady by the name of Dawn, and not planning to change too much in the first year. the current owner will help for a few days a week to get them off the ground. As for the windmill a lottery grant is being applied for to aid in its restoration and a new car park of the A47 to attract visitors. All looking good for the future at Stracey, just a pity the old pub was never returned to its former glory.

Favourite place is Bramerton Common. But how about this for a sunset at Stracey Arms

Have to say we went to the Horning Boat Show last year for the first time and had a great day. Definitely going again this year and would thoroughly recommend it if you have not been before. Something for every one and the kids loved it too. My favourite has to be the enormous burgers at the Swan Bar- B- Q. Oh ok and the beer !!! Just keeping everything crossed for the weather !
