  1. There aren't as many moorings at Stokesby as there are at Acle, so if you want to book something in advance that you want to get to by taxi, that sounds like a better option.
  2. I know. The trouble with forecasting doom and gloom too frequently is that people like me just stop paying attention, even though I don’t suppose for a moment that it’s ‘fake news’. I guess those of us who are interested but not invested in the cause just get a bit fatigued if it’s plugged too relentlessly. What I’m trying to say is, don’t alienate potential allies by overdosing the message.
  3. Oh wow. You are making me so envious. We would love to mudweight overnight on Bargate, but having the dog with us almost rules that out. I’m just waiting for us to get an allocation on our syndicate boat near mid-summer so we can take the dog for a walk from our Brooms mooring late evening and then sneak into Bargate before sunset.
  4. I can second that! Praise indeed! Looking back on your posts, it’s very encouraging how you have moved on from almost quitting.
  5. Good luck Ian. Here's to a speedy recovery!
  6. Good point Andrew, having never actually stopped at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station I’d forgotten that it closes for winter. Just checked their website, they are closed from 1st November, so they might just squeak in if they manage to before the end of the month.
  7. Having had some rain (and wind!) during our fortnight at the end of September, I was hoping that people on their boats in October would have better weather. (That’s the beauty of the forum...at least if you can’t have the ideal weather yourself, you can appreciate your fellow boaters having the perfect day on the Broads. Especially if they share photos and videos.) Where’s our autumn for goodness sake!
  8. Me too. I’m avoidIng threads that start on this theme. It’s starting to bore me, and that’s possibly where the biggest danger lies. I appreciate that people like Peter (JennyMorgan) have experience of BA committees, and I’m sure have sound reasons for their stance. I don’t doubt there are concerns to be addressed, but they need to appreciate that most of us just see things carrying on as normal. I can see the difficulty of trying to keep the issue in public awareness, but in the meantime fear that the eternal repetition on so many threads risks putting off the ordinary occasional Broads punter. How to reach a compromise? Needs a bit more nuance. Win over more people. Try not to alienate natural allies.
  9. If that’s half term have some back up plans for moorings. If you haven’t been to the Broads for ages make sure you are familiar with the advice for going down to Yarmouth where the tidal current will be strong if you arrive at the ‘wrong time’...and even if you have read up the advice beforehand, it’s always a good idea to ring up the Yacht Station there for the latest advice. If your boat doesn’t have shore power you should still be cosy if you bring hot water bottles with you and warmer night gear than normal. Extra fleecy blankets probably would help too.
  10. Oh yes! The whole stress of people watching you moor up. Thinking back, I’m so glad we had our first short break on a motor boat on the Broads first week of the season (March...and freezing!). It’s so much easier when no one is watching! We had hired a sailing boat the previous summer, but it’s like people expect you to mess up on one of those. We got stuck in a tree one year, and had to be towed off...how embarrassing! Im sure if you prodded NBN regulars we’d all have our ‘embarrassing moments’ to relate. Funny how they stick in your memory as the notable features of each year’s holiday. Always amusing in hindsight.
  11. Short boating wellies might not be up to the job either! The water might be lapping over the top of them! Seriously though, the Broads aren’t that inundated with water normally. Seems to coincide with strong winds, especially northerlies or easterlies, so watch the long range weather forecast. You’ll probably be fine.
  12. This did make me chuckle, though it shouldn’t really as Ive been caught out by the auto spell correction too many times. That’s really some journey, to Acle via Scotland.
  13. Lovely! Doesn’t it make you feel good when a kayaker or similar vessel thanks you for your civilised wash. Very much enjoying this tale. Thanks.

I'm another Skin So Soft convert. I got my last supply of 2-3 bottles of the stuff from Amazon.
  15. Impressive photos of Beccles. I will definitely not forget my wellies on future Broads weeks!
  16. Wow, not the best start to your holiday. We were hunkered down that day on our syndicate boat which is moored at Brooms and we couldn’t help wondering how people starting their weekly hires were doing, given the horrible weather. We had decided not to go anywhere ourselves that Friday, so I think your decision to stay in the yard that day was very sensible. Looking forward to the rest of your write up...don’t worry about taking time to post it, we all know that work gets in the way! Detailed is good!
  17. I can just imagine that suggestion in the hands of a newbie to drones. Could go anywhere and everywhere. Maybe not!
  18. I wasn’t suggesting there was any issue with the NBD or Ferry Marina boats that we hired. Just was wondering whether there was any particular reason in the differences in the electric set up, and maybe pros and cons.
  19. I did not know much (um...don’t know anything) about onboard electrics. On the hire boats that we had which had shore power there was a common 240v socket that worked when we used the inverter and when we were hooked up to shore power. However, now we have Moonlight Shadow, there are separate (and helpfully clearly marked up) sockets for shore power and the inverter. So, what’s that all about? Why the difference?
  20. That’s a really beautiful photo of Broad Ambition.
  21. Sounds plausible Jean. The tides were certainly messed up when we were there a fortnight ago.
  22. Oh, Malcolm, you do realise that ‘the pub’ will forever be imprinted in my brain as The Bluechamp Arms..even if they repaint it. Have they run out of blue paint?
