  1. Thanks for the tip off Liz. Just checked my phone…no signal. HPC replaced their WiFi a few months back and we now have a nice strong signal whilst we are in the Marina. The traffic wasn’t too bad apart from through Wroxham. We got here just before 5pm.
  2. Most self managed syndicate boats have their own website. A couple (Thunder and Evening Shadow) are managed by a company called BCBM. Other syndicate boats that you could try googling include Gooseander (though she’s really a boat for two people, not a family), Lightning and Blue Mist. There’s also Ranworth Breeze.
  3. Whoopee doopie! We will be starting our next trip on Moonlight Shadow tomorrow. Younger son Alec will be with us for this trip. Plus Seren and Pozzie, of course. We’ve done some packing, but not much. 5pm boat take over time doesn’t exactly spur one on to get away early, especially as we only have a two hour+ journey. Just as well, as I’m already in relaxed holiday mood.
  4. I’m with you on those mooring preferences. Generally, I’m not keen on ‘sardine’ stern moorings, except when moored alongside convivial fellow boaters in a ‘meet up’’ when you know your fellow boaters will be considerate. At other times I get stressed if people start up engines.
  5. My favourite spot so far is that wild mooring just before the Irstead bend. I say 'so far' as there are lots of mooring spots that we haven't tried out yet. I love above Potter Heigham bridge too and have a hankering for mooring overnight at 'Dungeon Corner' which is on a bend before you get to the stretch that passes Martham Broad. Obviously we won't be doing that on Moonlight Shadow!
  6. Coo, that’s real Broads loyalty! Not even nearly drowning put you off.
  7. We are very much Broads newbies, our first trip wasn't until July 2015. We hired Wood Violet from Hunter's Yard and completely fell in love with the Broads. Our eldest son Harry was with us for that trip, and our elderly dog Marvin. March 2016 we had our first experience on a motor cruiser: Turquoise Emblem from Ferry Marina. Just a short mid-week break. That was our final holiday with Marvin as he had been diagnosed with an oral cancer, so we have a bittersweet memory of that trip. July 2016 we persuaded both sons to join us and we hired two Hunter's boats: Hustler and Hustler 3. This trip was briefly captured on a YouTube video 'The Norfolk Broads, The Quiet Side ' 3:17 minutes into the video. April-May 2017 we persuaded my cousins to join us and hired Royale Emblem from Ferry Marina, so that was five adults and a dog on that trip. Notable for being our collie dog Seren's first trip. July 2017 we hired the four-berth 'Lullaby' from Hunter's Yard, with eldest son Harry and collie Seren. This one was notable as it was the week after my mother's funeral. Just the peace and quiet that we needed to heal after a difficult time. September 2017 Graham and I hired Fair Regent 3 from NBD. Just Seren along this time for the ride. March 2018 Another trip on Fair Regent. This time Fair Regent 1. We loved the layout of this boat. October 2018 we were on Bronze Emblem with Harry and Seren. July 2019 was another Hunter's boat trip on Lustre with Harry and Seren. August 2019 was out first trip on Moonlight Shadow, having bought a share in the boat the previous month. We managed to squeeze in our second trip on Moonlight Shadow February 2020, just before lockdown started. The first day that lockdown lifted (4th July 2020) we had a week on Hunter's Yard's Lucent with Harry and Seren. We also managed to get a couple of long weekends on Water Rail at the end of July and end of August, courtesy of Dave's generosity. We also had an extended 12 day trip on Water Rail last September. We are planning our 14th trip on Moonlight Shadow from day after tomorrow. Anyone agree with me that we've maybe made up for it as late-comers to the Broads?
  8. Was it? I’ve been very airy fairy then. I somehow missed that.
  9. Norfolk Lady looks a treat. Just shows how much loving care you bestow on her.
  10. That's lovely Grace. Glad you enjoy your work. It's so rewarding working with young children, though some of them can be a bit trying at times!
  11. I’ve been out most of this evening but will pass on the hints and advice to Harry tomorrow. Thanks!
  12. The wheels turned when they got it out of the garage.
  13. Ooh, all this is beyond my (non) pay grade. Will report on to Harry. Sigh.
  14. Hah! As if. Unless he’s been Markled.
  15. Yes, agree with you Kate in that you do need knowledge of your subject, though once you have grasped research skills, extending your knowledge to a related subject is achievable. Communication is the key skill though. Sadly lacking in some very highly qualified people!
  16. Ah yes, obviously we were the generation that got experimented on when they were considering a GCSE regime. I did my O levels/CSEs in 1976. How lucky were you. I obviously drew the short straw in numbers of exams sat! By the way, I asked to be moved from the Physics O level class to the CSE class as I couldn’t make head nor tail of what the physics teacher was trying to teach us. I think that was probably a sensible decision as I got a top CSE grade and would have probably got a ‘U’ or similarly bad grade at O level. The physics teacher was the most highly qualified teacher in the school, having a doctorate. Unfortunately, only the very bright scientifically nerdy kids benefitted from his teaching. They all sat at the front of the class. It was telling that the only four girls who elected to take physics were relegated to the back of the class. Recent governments have been obsessed with ‘improving’ teaching by insisting that secondary school teachers should be graduates in their subjects. My school experience suggests subject expertise is less important than teaching expertise!
  17. So minus 10% for other subjects. Or maybe the maths didn’t go so well? I wasn’t that great at maths. Luckily I ended up in the borderline class that they decided to experiment on. Downside, we had to sit more exams than anyone else, on the plus side I ended up with both an ‘O’ level certificate (just about scraped a pass grade C) and a CSE grade 1 certificate. I was even luckier that the teacher that we had in our two year period leading to the exams was the first who was able to explain maths in a way that I understood. He was a bit of a character. A lot more relaxed in class than many teachers. He retired a couple of years later and got an acting job on the very popular Welsh soap drama ‘Pobl y Cwm’ on S4C. One of the main characters too. I was impressed!
  18. There used to be a lovely YouTube vlog created by a girl who lived with her Mum on the canals and who was homeschooled. Doing the vlog was part of her learning experience. She posted up another video recently, she and her Mum are now shore based and she’s preparing to go to college, so sounds like that homeschooling was pretty effective.
  19. Harry tried to move the car this afternoon but couldn’t. It seems to be in gear, despite the gear stick being in neutral. Any suggestions from anyone?
  20. It's been too hot for a run earlier today...but this evening. VID-20230624-WA0002.mp4
  21. Have you replaced it? I have no idea where that fender originated. Given it was at the very back of our garage I suspect it predates our first visit to the Broads.
  22. Harry has been busy again. He started the day by taking half the carburettor apart and reassembled it to check the float bowl was okay. He’s siphoned the (30 year old) fuel out and took out the old full tank that had a lot of sludge in the bottom (having bought a replacement Riley Elf one on eBay), replaced the battery and battery terminals, and finally added an extra fuel filter just before the carburettor.
  23. That sounds worrying. I hope that’s not a sign to come, when moorings on the southern Broads are underused. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to being able to moor up on the southern broads week after next, but prolonged underuse will probably be taken as an excuse to reduce the number of moorings. I know we tend to have a running joke on the forum to ‘supposedly’ keep people away from the precious south ‘beware of dragons’ etc. , but with the current state of things following the closure of yet another southern based yard, we should be encouraging as many people as possible to visit down south as possible. You know the mantra…use it or lose it.
  24. Don’t give ‘them’ ideas!
