  1. Has any one else come across this YouTube vlog about a canal boater that has the ultimate personally made boat? My favourite bit is the description of his control panel as ‘the most retro-futuristic controls you’ll ever see’. His ingenuity has no bounds.
  2. Hopefully we are all being overly pessimistic about that. I’m with you on Ranworth. I like it during the winter months but it’s not somewhere that is appealing to us during the summer. Too much like ‘sardines’. Over the years we found The Maltsers a bit bit and miss, great sometimes, other times not so. I’d like to try out The Granary though.
  3. Wishing you well Ian, and Marina. Keep strong!
  4. I'm pretty sure it would be Pozzick's too, if he got a chance.
  5. Can I just say...eww. Assuming I'm right in thinking what you mean by 'tasty snacks'.
  6. Hardley Dyke is about mid way between Hardley Cross BA moorings and the Hardley Mill pontoon and, as Smoggy confirms, it can be accessed by vehicle down a quiet out-of-the-way farm track.
  7. Isn't the lack of trees in the background of that Barton Turf photo striking.
  8. Is it Hardley Dyke maybe? Downstream from Hardley Mill on the next bend?
  9. I came across this delightful vlog this evening. The last time I watched a Broads vlog from this guy was years ago. He did a trip or two with his son, one with his daughter and one with friends, but they were all about 10 years ago or so. Lovely to see families return with the next generation.
  10. There does seem to be a trend going on. When we visited Glasgow a few years back (in February) there were lots of people that just seemed to ignore the rain and were walking about without coats. The past few years I've noticed in March that as soon as we have a bit of sun some people adopt skimpy tops and shorts, despite northerly winds. Mind you, maybe they have been influenced by our Grendel...
  11. That's such a useful thing to know. We tend to forget that people need training. I'm sorry that the BA staff have to deal with such abusive behaviour. Having worked for a 'public body' early on in my career (pre-privatised British Rail) I got quite a lot of flak from people who just wanted to vent off. They don't see you as an individual, but a representative of the organisation. It doesn't matter if you are just a lowly meagrely paid individual just trying to do your job.
  12. That does seem daft. By the way, as we were passing Thorpe about a fortnight ago, I noticed they have a shiny new weed cutter. I knew it was new (try saying that) because it still had plastic covering the operators seat. Hopefully, that will be in operation soon.
  13. Thanks Jean. So are they still in Wroxham as well as being at Ludham Bridge? Must try lunch at the Kings Arms. I'm trying to get my head around being considered a 'senior' and to remember that I'm over 60 and have applied for retirement. Somehow my brain has difficulty processing this information.
  14. Hope not! That would make it an unpopular mooring!
  15. I’ve heard good things about Dollies Bakery, but I fear that locals will stop going out of their way to try to visit them unless they have signs indicating when they will be open…and then are actually open when they say they will be. It’s not in a village, so essentially rely on passing trade. I think they used to be in Wroxham, so the decision to relocate to Ludham Bridge seems an odd business choice. Presumably they had their reasons. St Catherine’s Church Ludham is a gem. Did you notice the screen that’s above the rood screen? A painting of the crucifixion on one side and Elizabethan (first) heraldic symbols on the other. They were obviously into recycling even in Tudor times.
  16. Maybe the height of the boat is deceiving in the picture, but I couldn't help wonder how do you get off the bow to moor up? There's another odd looking craft moored on the river near Acle Dyke that always has me wondering. I'm not sure whether it's just a super luxury modern houseboat, but if it's meant to move I wonder how you'd get off the bow of that one too. There are steps onto the roof but no gunwales (gunnels) that I could see.
  17. Nope, it looked like you were just pootling along at a reasonable pootle pace.
  18. I’ve noticed a few local stores get their potatoes from Meales too.
  19. I’m not sure what it is about acquiring an allotment, but since we’ve had ours we are always curious to see what other ‘allotmenteers’ are growing. Graham and I are failing miserably this year. Having the first couple of weeks in May on the boat isn’t exactly conducive to getting an allotment going for the season.
  20. I’ll second Jean’s recommendation, and the need to reserve a table. I visited with my son in January and we counted ourselves fortunate to have got a table. It’s a very popular place and deservedly so. The cake I had was so fresh (though rather sweet…MauriceMynah probably wouldn’t approve). Is also just a short walk from the Weyford Bridge BA moorings. The garden centre also has an excellent farm shop.
  21. The thing is, the bliss of ignoring all the days in between and letting time slide but still remembering what day you have to be back home (tricky).
