  1. Ref WaterseEdge, we (small son and I) called in by boat last Sunday 14th early afternoon, ample available moorings but car park full and most tables taken) and anyone who knows the road access it's hardly passing road trade, so clearly they have developed a good local land based clientele. It's not everyone's "cup of tea" but I quite like it. I also remember the old "Woods End" days when it was more "spit and sawdust". I think there is a market for this level given the propensity of private and expensive hire boats (Brooms and NYA) 30 or so minutes down stream.

  2. A couple of things regarding power / hookups:

First I recall (but it's been 2 years) that the Ferry House at Surlingham had it's own proprietary system. Cards purchased at the bar

In terms of how much cable - as much as possible but I know experts will caution about overloading - the longer the cable the greater the resistance ... it's also worth getting / making a 32A to 16A converter as you are likely to come across posts where both 16A sockets are taken but the larger 32A one is not.

    Enjoy the learning experience!

  3. Well I'm not; a while ago my wife said "we don't do Father's Day"! Must remember that on Mother's Day.....😳. Just off to paint a bathroom in a student house... 😁

Happy Father's Day to other father's.

  4. Currently on southern rivers, very quiet. Brundall to Cantley, can't have passed more than about 8-10 going the other way yesterday. Moorings were available yesterday late afternoon at Coldham Hall, Rockland staithe and here at Cantley.

    An update,

7 months later and the repairs are still not completed.

The boat is out of the water and the engine is in bits in the workshop.

I had them relaunch it at the end of November as they were still waiting for casing parts, as it turned out the steering had gone very notchy so it was pulled out again for further checks.

Eventually, the yard found the time to check the steering issue and thought the steering drive shaft (?) in the lower case was damaged.

After 10 hours of labour they eventually managed to open the case and prepare a final report and estimate, thankfully the insurers have accepted it and approved the work. Final cost, nearly £4500.

The cost of an new replacement, fitted, is 9k.

The engine is 2013 but has had very little, freshwater only use. It would have been criminal to chuck it away as it ran really well, and expensive for me to replace.

I live in hope that it might be back in use by the end of the month

Since I got the boat in September last year I have had 2 hours use, fingers crossed I will get some use this year.

Funnily enough only yesterday I was recalling that event and wondering what happened. Hope you soon get it sorted.

Yeah . . . . . . . . . . . . . I remember them.  The Van de Graaff generator was one (and I don’t mean the 60’s prog rock band!).  Put your hands on the dome as the teacher turned the crank and your hair stood up.  All was well until you were told to take one hand off the dome and touch a classmate!  Electrifying!!

This was one of many methods of punishment at my school for getting a low (ish) mark in a physics test! Chemistry lab next door had a patch in the ceiling where, rumour had it, an experiment went wrong...

its not a real money spinner for a yard to do a pump out, its more of a service and possibly building a relationship so they can possibly get a bit of work out of you! A hire yard may do pump outs on non turnaround days just to give staff something to do..

Brundall yards are generally a bit more expensive (if they do them )  as they have to tanker the S**T away as there is no mains sewer.. Im not sure what Brundall charges but north is generally £15 for one or £20 for two but some yards like to do them cheap and get the volume in..

Last time we visited Brooms at Brundall in mid September it was £18 for one tank, and I don't think that has changed in the last 4 years.

New to the broads with an air draft of 10’3” so Somerleyton bridge looks a problem even at low tide. What is the process for requesting the bridge to open ?

My airdraft is also circa 10'3". I've never got under Somerleyton and doubt you will. I can get under Reedham from about mid tide down but it ordinarially opens fairly frequently so tend to just wait for it to open.

If you don't already have, it may be worth investing in a marine 2 way radio. Hand held ones are cheap, in the context of boating costs!

  9. Yes a SSD will make a huge difference, all I would question is, is it worth upgrading if you have such an elderly CPU. Perhaps better to buy a recon desktop with a later i5 or i7 CPU? These appear currently available more reasonably than recon laptops. You could then upgrade to a fast SSD if necessary. In essence I'm not sure I'd put money into a system that has such a elderly processor.
