  1. If It can go wrong, it will eventually. That’s the nature of everything we do. Try to plan and get experience but things happen. Even with gps ships run aground. The best plan then is prey it don’t happen to you. But if it does, have a plan
  2. You don’t need washer water level alarm on your car but it’s handy. All the examples above would have been alerted with a depth sounder. The point was you need to draw attention to another dimension of water depth that can be monitored easily. And I’ve seen a few boats hung up on the margins down south loads of people don’t read T and C on this forum or hire sheets.
  3. After sailing around the east coast you get to know about running aground. You also get to know your depth sounder and your draft. The broads for at least a hire boat, your unlikely to run aground. It does not figure in a hirers calculation. There is no notice on draft and I’ve only hired one boat that had a depth sounder. I was surprised how shallow The broads are in places Maybe the answer is to post up draft notices and equip with depth gauges with alarms like my NASA.
  4. Don’t overlook the tide tables. you go on holiday, want to go south and you find out low tides are when it’s nearly dark or late or early. or simply don’t think about the return until you have too then you worry about time and mooring wide open water, not really sure about estuary tides or your keel depth could cut corners save time..... who apart from us, takes tide into consideration when booking hols?
  5. This is what sinks the BBC in my mind ” On today we have the internationally respected ex world trade organisation chairman and a reporter from the Sun” and they both have equal screen time. False equivalence happens in politics, you name it These opinions are not equal
  6. I’ll keep saying this, water is a killer with a gentle face but it’s still a killer. Your boat still has mass and inertia and gravity still effects you. Things happen in slo mo but they happen
  7. You sell it like a holiday and then turn it into a driving test A bit like the brochures where everyone is sitting outside a pub. No mention of the chances of actually mooring there no one wants reality better designed boats, wider walkways, tunnelled props and ladders
  8. It’s no good, the engine has fallen off😀 The great thing about sailing it scales up. Master that and you end up buying a 32 ft westerly. I wish I’d learnt on the Broads.
  9. Trouble I have is that my marina won’t allow contractors to work in the yard, that stopped me getting a sparks to do some works
  10. Banks and reeds, sir? see that’s the wooden boat speaking in you, always looking for the next tree to fell. As you look over the tops of those reeds watching the sugar factory move closer and further away, I’m doing a Luke skywalker down the trench of the battle star avoiding those vessels who’s masters are busily looking over the tops of things. as for stern mooring, I’ve trained myself a wife with a set of pipes on her to scare a drill sergeant
  11. As president and chief cheerleader for bathtub boats (for the unenlightened) these are great to learn on. less effect of the wind, level with the bank and built like a brick outhouse having a very bad day.
  12. Bloody hirers, ain’t got a bleeding clue how to steer those big things😀
  13. More engine power I go by. if at tick over and you can’t hold 4 mph then I’d say not really suitable Those horses need a good run more than an hour
  14. Because the mask protect the other person not you so the shop workers are protected from you because you wear mask as your coming into their bubble
  15. If you work together then no you don’t have to wear mask
  16. True. I’m seeing situations not covered really. paddleboard before sail? What’s going to be the legal position in a collision? To keep my HGV license I’ve got to do 7 hours on a bike through London. Gives me a different look on things. The BA needs a campaign to inform all water users of their responsibilities but the big selling point of kayak/paddle boards is freedom
  17. Not to be a kill joy, worth remembering your surrounded by water, with ropes and possibly a fast flowing river so be careful if you bend one on and decide it’s a great idea to go out and check your mooring line ‘cos your captain Ahab😁
  18. Its a bit like the on going war in London with the cyclists. Some say, there's not much point in getting dressed up in lycra, sweating in the heat only to sit in traffic. Might as well sit in a car. So they cut corners, jump lights and ride on paths and so on. Some see themselves as super pedestrians with the same rights as pedestrians only faster. So the traffic rules don't apply. I've gone around that corner in Horning going towards the Ant, straight into the path of a paddle boarder. Maybe keeping to the margins but so am I in order to keep away from a sailer. Or rafted together in the middle of a river acting like a traffic island. Or paddling along at night with no lights. Mark my words. There is going to be a tragic accident one day and I can guarantee you the boater will get the blame.
  19. They are thinking about a short sharp shock lockdown around the half term in October for two weeks. Won't include workplaces and certain types of hospitality. (Blackpool, certain hotels, some pubs and restaurants) may well be you have to stay in your area but who knows and who will obey it now? pointless really.
  20. I remember taking my sailing vessel out on the Medway straight after buying her with only The broads experience in my locker. The difference was massive and immediate. Anywhere you pick on the Broads regarding tide at its worst is just Tuesday on the real stuff. The wind moved you around like a chess piece and ships out there where moving cliffs. After returning meekly to my swing mooring I booked lessons. Apart from the water is always out to get you, I learnt that experience is priceless and you only get that through time and practice. And almighty cock ups. Exactly what you don’t get on a tightly packed, schedule keeping, children wailing last minute holiday.
  21. Agreed. It’s just I’m seeing more and more dangerous behaviour and actions by all users of the rivers but more so by kayaks and paddle boarders.
  22. Although I understand the sentiments in my industry we discuss accidents and deaths as and when they happen in the hope education and discourse could prevent further accidents. In light of the high rate of incidents around that area I would expect those with experience to be screaming from the rooftops hoping to prevent further deaths
  23. Second law of boating That time you do a perfect mooring no one will see it. Cock it up and everyone will come out of their boats like meerkats
