  1. From experience good top ends getting hard to find. Personally I would go down the repair path, along with a rebuild of the head and least you know what you’re getting.

  4. We got to get it right. We have spent a considerable time removing industry from the centres of habitation with cheap cars granting the ability to reach them. Villages and small towns rely on the connections to regional distribution centres for the basics. The staff who work there need to get in to in reasonable priced cars. Public transport is not even on the map. As ICE use dies, so does the fuel infrastructure meaning that the price of fuel can only rise further pushing those on lower wages doing the work that is vital into the red It is a very real threat that certain sections of our society will suffer greatly because their work is no longer reachable and those that depend on that pyramid will also suffer. Think nursing homes.
  5. New battery, new type of charger most likely. Instantly rendering older types of battery obsolete and those that went early out of pocket. VHS versus Betamax. The technology is not stable enough yet to pin your hopes on.
  6. nerdy time. watched the met forecaster explaining that the next 7 weeks weather is set in the next two weeks by the airflow reversing on the north pole. And as the counter air mass collide, the spin off air either drags air in from Siberia (beast from the east) or the Atlantic which can be most things but not really cold. The point was, until the air mass settles, no one really knows what the future will be, and at best will take a couple of weeks to tell
  7. after start up, which uses about 10 amps and the same when on run down when the glow plugs are active, depending on heat settings it uses about 2 amps when running. And about a liter of diesel for a night. At least my Chinese one does. As said, a decent set of batteries should get you through the night. If the heater can only start with the engine running then the batteries are low or the cable run is too small

  10. Just too expensive. Same for eating out. we are up on our boat fairly often and it would really add to costs for what I can do on my boat at less than half the cost. And then there’s the issue of actually mooring anywhere near
  11. Just posting an update... First, hats off to those old hands who explained that the cold must be something special or very long before major problems arise. Particularly around the sea cocks freezing solid. Well all of my fresh water pumps are below the water line (one taps, toilet and shower) all survived and so did all feeds to the taps. Again, most of the runs are below the water line and the only the feeds above this line froze. I'm guessing the water tank itself froze. Shower pump is also in the land of the living. In the engine compartment, again every raw water pipe above the water froze solid, including the raw water pump but not the filter which is right down and none of the through hulls. The engine started fine and ran well. I cant help thinking thanks to Ricko's use of wire reinforced plastic pipe nothing burst. My last vessel had the more cheaper pipe. This time with the aid of a large diameter pipe and bucket, syphon and a thumb over the end of the pipe and me shouting instructions to the wife. The system is now filled with anti freeze. Lessons learnt. I'm going to insolate pipes that rise above the water line as a belt and braces approach. From October, I'm going to leave the fresh water tanks empty and taps open. From October, I'm going to flush anti freeze through. I've got 25 litres made up and it really takes no time. I'm going to silicon grease the water filter threads and rubber. It really made opening the lid a lot easier at full reach. I'm going to shut the through Hulls when i leave the boat. I used to do that when I owned a sea going vessel
  12. Spot on. The path of the raw water pipes took them out of the warmer zone near or at the water level and near the skin of the hull. The fresh water pipes is the same. so with that knowledge I’m going to lag the pipes that feed the cooler that’s out of the warm zone then move weed filter to a more accessible place
  13. Hi annv you have guided me before. it’s about positioning and where can you put the weed filter. I have a rear engined flattie, a Bermuda 34 it has 2 raw water intakes, one under the stairs and one on the left side both feed into a weed filter on the same level as the engine barer near the crank shaft end. Single pipe up to the pump then down again to the bilge and back to the stair end to the hydraulic cooler then back to the pump end into the heat exchanger. To flush the system it takes a lot but the main problem is that you have to pour it in while engine is running from at least 3 feet up or risk losing something in the spinning bits. so the question is, is there any hard and fast rules as to where the filter can be? How high or low, even how far?

I suppose my point was I’ve seen owners shut off through hulls, start the engine and wait until water stops coming out from exhaust and call it done. as I’ve found out, and it has been pointed out, that anything from the pump onwards will be full of water still because the pump can’t pump air. I watched an owner do that last year. False sense of security. Now I’m going to rig up a tank that I can connect to the pump intake full of antifreeze mix so I can still use the boat in winter and quickly rewinterise it again

Hi, Caught unawares by this cold snap, I had only used the above method of "winterising" the boat before leaving last time in the belief I could be back in time in case of anything serious comes along......Forgot about sickness that could prevent that, another story. So when i did make it aboard I found that anything below the water line still water and, this is the point, a pipe that runs from the pump to hydraulic cooler frozen solid as well as its return into the heat exchanger. And as a bonus, the raw water pump frozen solid so I guess a little backflow crept in. and for a brucie bonus, I never drained the water system so that's solid as well, And now to the point. Point proven that just running the engine with the valves shut does not empty the system. The pump can't pump air so by poking around it justs empties the pipe upto the pump and anything in the exhaust. It may be time consuming and expensive but when winter comes im always going to flush with anti freeze mix. and im always going to drain down the water after october. could be expensive come the thaw
  16. Think hgv. How and where we live demands lorry’s. Electric or hybrids are in the next century. £500 worth of diesel is a lot of stored energy. No government has an idea on this front unless we go back to Victorian times where cities had heavy industrial in them and living in the countryside was purely farming based. And that’s the point. Our style of living has wondered away from this
  17. also don't forget aspiration. (if that's the right word) As a kid, I can remember the boat shows were massive, many people really wanted a boat or its lifestyle. Many 70's and early 80's TV shows or films included the rich lounging around on a boat. And I think the Broads gave us a slice of that life. Just look at early cine films of The Broads with the crews with their boatyard colours on a bobble hat. Now not so much. A better house,car or holiday abroad. The Broads are in competition with the rest of the world. BA have to get to grips with the mooring situation or come up with novel ideas. Last october we met a couple who loved the holiday but hated that they just could not moor up where they wanted and because they believed the advertising, they never had enough food on board because they thought they could moor up outside pubs and eat. And my last point is, have a look at the average age of hirers, younger or older?
  18. As in life, you get a mix. seen it in the Medway. Like it or not, some liveaboards will spread out and create eyesores. Maidstone council had to remove several from the town centre as generators, bikes, wood and rubbish spread. It’s a big brush that paints us all but that’s the way of it but I can promise you that if BA release the pressure off then great stretches of the Broads will be unusable.
  19. Strange. Part of my job is to clear up after accidents on the motorway and have seen the utter chaos left by drink drivers. My employer enforces a zero alcohol policy (apart from natural background). Very easy to comply. You just don't drink and you know no level is safe. simple. lives saved
  20. I noticed that if you take the Beccles branch from Great Yarmouth you will only have two places to fill up. I was told that the WRC is doubtful to reinstate both pump out and Diesel.
  21. It’s there when it isn’t a dry boat! l look at this as I look at fire extinguishers. They sit there until you need them then you really need them. I would rig the dry ones to an alarm for a really good heads up to a potential serious situation
  22. Power is going to be your enemy if your heating depends on power somewhere. seek out those electric poles! We have a very good paraffin heater, designed for domestic use (not green house use) that really does the trick

  24. I would like an additional mark for the technical difficulty of the dance. I watched a Charleston last that barely qualified as a dance that out pointed a waltz. Marking seems a little generous this year.
