By the end of October, there’s every possibility of high tides that would make passage through Ludham Bridge difficult.

To be fair, Richardson’s usually send some staff to the bridge in such circumstances to help, but if I were you, I’d look for something with a lower airdraft that will ensure that the you can get through without issues.  Broads Harmony from Richardson’s is a similar design but with screen and canopy lowered, has an airdraft of just 7ft 2ins.

Thanks for the recommendation - Broads Harmony looking favourite

  2. Hi All

Hoping to return this year after a few years away. Just wondering the favoured spots for wild mooring using mudweights and are there any no-go areas to know about, we will be on the northern broads, likely hiring from Richardsons as long as we can get under Ludham bridge. Thanks all in advance, I appreciate your help and advice always.

  3. Hi All

Just looking for suggestions on something a little different. We have visited the Broads several times, mostly for 3-4 night trips from Wroxham or Stalham. This year, we are bringing a couple of extra family members (grandparents) who haven't seen the Broads before and I wondered what your suggested itinerary might look like for a 3 night break?

    Typically, we might do Wroxham -> Acle -> Stokeby -> S.Walsham -> Ludham -> Stalham/Sutton -> Horning

    And stay/moor where we can.

Any suggestions for something a little different would be welcome, we are happy eating in/out depending on availability/moorings etc. Boat pickup is Friday PM.

    Thanks in advance :-)

Not opposite the Bridge Inn, but yes above the bridge. The majority of the BA moorings on the north bank upstream from the bridge are taped off at present, as they are carrying out works to install electric posts. If you are arriving late then the Pedro’s owned moorings on the opposite bank are probably your best bet. (£10 fee though.) If they are all full (as they were when we arrived in Acle around 6pm during the last week of August last year), don’t panic. There are several spots suitable for wild mooring just beyond the formal moorings.

Thankyou YnysMon, really appreciate the tips. Are the wild moorings (and Pedro's moorings) on the Pedro's side of the river, I can't quite get my bearings exactly where you mean (sorry). Thanks again.

  5. Hi All

We're hoping to moor at Acle on Fri 24th July, got a table booked at the Bridge Inn. Hoping to land there around 5pm, so fingers crossed for a space. Can you moor on both sides of the river? Thanks

Most of the time you can get a mooring along St Benets Straight without mudweighting.. and walk from there to the Dog Inn Ludham.

I didn't realise you could get to the Dog Inn from there - great suggestion, thanks :-)

Simon - my apologies for asking whether it was north or south you wanted when the clue is in the topic title!

I know a few people use mudweights fore and aft, to hold the boat steady, and moor close to a bank but not touching it. You obviously need to make sure there is sufficient depth for this and it probably wouldn’t be sensible in a strong/gusty wind. I am assuming you are hiring so you could ask the boatyard to provide you with a second mudweight. I’m sure if this is a naff suggestion, someone will very quickly say so.

Thanks Vannessan - yes, we've had a 2nd mudweight before which worked really well :-)

  8. Hi All, some pointers please from the experts! I always get a little nervous about not being able to find a mooring during the busy season, even though evenings are longer and the weather is generally kinder. I've mudweighted in a couple of broads previously but wondered if you could suggest good safe places to mudweight should the need arise? Thanks in advance, it's an OCD thing .....!

Better still, hire a boat that is designed to go through the bridges at all times. That way, you can go through Wroxham and Wayford bridge, meaning you can get to the quieter and much prettier stretches of the river.

I`m sure Barnes Brinkcraft will have some more suitable boats still available to swap your booking?.

Good point, maybe next time around. We really liked the Royale last time so will judge on the day and go for it.

  10. We have Brinks Royale for 4 nights in August (can't wait) and planning to cruise up the River Ant to Barton and Stalham. Last time we visited we had Brinks Royale but I didn't risk Ludham bridge because the height on the Royale is listed as 8ft6in, same as Ludham Bridge. I watched the Captain's Blog review on the Royale and the 'London Rascal'/Robin (think that's his name) managed it no problem. I've since researched the bridge clearance in various places and the general opinion seems to be that the height gauges are generous and the Royale should be fine, especially at low tides. Would appreciate expert opinions from those in the know please to avoid red faces in August ........

    Cheers

Take a pair of sturdy gardening glove for handling the line - cheap hairy polyprop can give you a swine of a friction burn! Also if the weight sinks too far to haul out, cleat the line off and drag it up using a good touch of reverse to break the suction.

Nice tips Stumpy, especially the gloves as I remember the cheap polyprop last time. Many thanks.

Sounds obvious but make sure you  have room to perform a full 360 swing around the mudweight without risking hitting anything or anyone else - wind is a fickle mistress

Indeed, although I've seen quite a few who miss the obvious ...!

Looks like you won't have much trouble... from the NSBA Green book.

The below is what I believe the clubs would like you to do, Please:default_coat:, if you see sailing boats.

On Barton and Wroxham broads keep round the edges ( the deep water side of any  marker  posts)

Horning keep right and slow through the  sailing particularly the Thursday junior training.

Hickling stick to the deep water channel most of the racing is outside that.

    The other places I don't know I ain't been there:default_biggrin:(for sailing)

Technically there is a charge for mud weighting on Wroxham - but no one has ever tried to collect off me!  Salhouse is free for mud weighting but a charge if you moor either on the spit or in the Broad itself.

    Thanks Marshman

    Welcome to the site...:default_welcome:

My warning about Hickling is there are one or two places with a hard Bottom and the mud weight just doesn't stick in the bottom properly. One place is up toward the sailing club on their side of the channel.

There is also a hard ridge running across the broad about half way up outside of channel on the opposite side of the  broad..

PS if you are on the Broads 3rd to the 9th of August, That will be Horning Ragatta time. About a month before I'll post a guide to getting through with the least hassle..(called... Navigating the Northern Broads 3rd to 9th Aug 2019)

Sounds good, thanks for the info. We are there 19th-24th Aug, so will miss the Ragatta :-(

    Thanks again

    Hello Simon,

    Welcome to the forum.

Like Broad Ambition, on Ranworth Breeze we also have a spare mud weight that we tie to one of the aft rails on the bathing platform, as Griff says you have to watch for drag but if you overnight on a Broad it beats going around in circles.

    Regards

    Alan

    Great, many thanks Alan
