  1. I can offer this https://nimbus.se/ Swedish boat builder since 1968 apparently. Identical but colours reversed (Or maybe your pic is upside down ?!). Might be worth asking them if the colours were ever the other way around, might be worth something to them !

  3. Not surprised you were not thinking hair styling, for some reason your pic reminded me of a Bargain Hunt episode some weeks ago wherein the curler was illustrated, after that it was easy. The BBC has it's uses sometimes. A long gone era that can still fascinate.
  4. I didn't know naval joiners were fussy about their hair ! These are probably Victorian/Edwardian Exhibit One, to the left Your one is missing a rather important part methinks. Exhibit Two, in the centre OK, so you have the economy version Exhibit Three, to the right Might be items acquired somewhere, as we all do, or may be Ma or Grandma ?

  6. Probably originally late 40s into 50s, maybe produced to accompany one of his books (??) Matches design, and paper, of an unpursued project of my youth, recently disposed of. Plans, and books, are indeed still available, if rare it seems the pricing is designed to ensure they remain so !   8. Might just be my imagination but is there not a massive "Elephant In The Room" here ? I might be missing something but I have seen nothing even hinting at New Years Eve celebrations. Does not the Christmas easing of restrictions end some 3/4 days before ? If Christmas results in nationwide spikes what will New Year do ? Somehow I don't see your usual party animals passing up the chance to kick 2020 into touch, not that 2021 will be any different to start with at least, it's a huge time for pubs and clubs. Surely the "Powers That Be" have it under consideration, or are we in for more last minute patching ? Whatever, here at MB Towers we shall continue to keep our heads down until vaccination, and beyond, courtesy of Tesco's priority deliveries (Charge now £5.50, was £2.00). No choice really with my copd and Daffy Dear's asthma. Psychicsurveyor's post on pleasing all the people (Not) is so so right, I can't say we should please ourselves because that is clearly a major part of the problem. I also found that appealing to my MP did wonders in chasing our local authority into action. You do usually have to help the local authority gain necessary information. This can appear time-consuming and you are the only one who knows if it's worth the trouble. I can appreciate the frustration you are probably feeling, we had 12 years of it some time ago now, including the police turning up eight hours after a 999 call, not to investigate the incident but to try and tell me I shouldn't have rung 999 !!

Around 60 years ago I was in a class of 10/11 year olds being taught that the Southeast was slowly sinking and the Northwest was rising, a geological certainty apparently, hence 30 plus children having nightmares for a few nights about Poseidon coming after them. By the time I left school the emergency had been downgraded to perhaps something like an inch or two every 100 years or so, Poseidon was still coming but for the moment he had missed the bus. Science at work. The intervening years have seen vast sums spent on flood defenses in areas deemed at risk, some of which has worked, although I think the jury is still out in Devon and Cornwall. We heard much about "Global Warming" but this soon morphed into "Climate Change" when the science went awry amid accusations of selective data use and manipulation. Let's be clear about one thing, before the High Priests of Climate Change hang me out to dry, if the huge rafts of plastic in the Pacific teach us anything it is that we do not treat our home planet with enough respect. Whether or not Climate Change is real we haven't paid enough attention to that. Science at work. Many governments around the world pour enormous amounts into CC projects yet I don't feel as if the mysteries of planet Earth get a similar level of support e.g. what is going on under our feet, from what I was reading a couple of weeks ago if a Yellowstone Park monster eruption occurs, as scientists believe it will, eventually, it will take about one third of the planets inhabitants out with it. That should take care of Climate Change scenarios for a while. Science at work. Fast forward to now where I can get a 10 day weather forecast and watch it continually adjusted from day to day as they change their minds. Science at work ? Poseidon perhaps twitches a bit in his slumbers but if he does truly awaken, and the Great Estuary comes to pass then no doubt Climate Change will get the blame. Never mind that we have been fighting him for centuries. No doubt King John would have blamed CC for the loss of his treasure had that excuse been available. I can't see me being around in fifty years time but I will pass on the warning to my son. It seems his options will be flippers in the Northeast or face masks in the Northwest.

  17. If you haven't got any tape I can advise that a line drawn on the wheel hub with the wife's blood red lipstick works too, when she's not looking. I forgot to clean it off and I did wonder what the yard made of it !
  18. Looks a pretty cool summary RSF. Just had a thought while reading it, how about "L" plates ? Maybe red on white for first trip then green on white for the second. It might help identify those who may need help. Not sure if it's worth it but I can't yet think of a reason why not. At least it's cheap ! Also not sure if it's enforceable in the way car plates are. Then again maybe Broads Beat and the Rangers could award an "I" for idiot ?
  19. When I hire a boat the only contract that matters is that between the yard and me as the"Named Person". If you are now introducing a third party I would be very surprised if the yard would, or could, allow this other than as a named member of the party when booking so I am still held responsible if something goes wrong whilst following the skippers advice, so he's not actually the skipper, as in leader, but experienced crew. It follows that I am just as free to ignore his advice as I am of the boatyard, having paid extra for the privilege. It therefore follows further that if I would listen to him then I would listen to the yard in the first place. Either he is in charge or not, if he is the yard might well have something to say about it, not to mention their insurance company. Remember, the hire contract is with me. If the so-called skipper owned the boat, or boats, that is entirely different, hence the need for a yard. Mouldy has explained the Second Motorboater Law Of Consequences most eloquently - If you dream up an unworkable proposition someone will tell you it is unworkable. I think YnysMon is trying to explain the Third Law - Those with enough money will go with the best value and those without won't go anywhere. I'm sorry if you didn't like the reference to La-La land, I was merely trying to stay within TOS.

Listening to John Packman this morning I was left with the impression that they have a firm idea of safety areas to research but left me wondering from the proposed approach if they had actually done it before. I have been following this thread with great interest but am now growing tired of the carping about what the boatyards should be doing and their qualifications for doing it. Hire boats may be a major source of incidents, I don't know, but are we saying private owners are blameless ? Nearly fifty years of dealing with Joe Public face to face leaves me in no doubt that even if you chain him to a desk watching videos, writing test papers and issue fancy certificates at the end of it, all you are doing is delaying the inevitable. All he wants is to do his own thing. When he bumps the boat next door pulling out from the yard mooring, bangs his rear end against something, or somebody, when turning and runs aground ignoring posts and signs all the pretty paper certifies is that it is their fault, they've been taught otherwise but decided they know better. The yards don't send people out to be injured or to die, and to even imply otherwise should, not could, result in them looking up solicitors phone numbers. The First Motorboater Law Of Consequences says More = More. More traffic on the roads means more accidents, more covid testing means more positive results and more boats on the broads means more idiots. The boatyards have many years of handing boats over to punters and have evolved their current methods due to that experience. I, for one, will not presume to know better. If they are required to change tack it will have to come from on high and the question has be from whom. The marine investigation people have decided to investigate one fatality but not another, this should not be right. All accidents, lethal or otherwise, should be reportable and investigated thoroughly. The boatyard handover checklists could easily be compared to what the punter says he was told, or not. The Broads Authority are doing their thing, local councils often like to stick their oar in, the marine investigators are deciding what they will or will not do. Just who exactly is responsible for legally enforceable safety guidelines on the water in the manner of the Health and Safety Executive ? Maybe they should have a marine branch too, just to complicate things further. Maybe Wussername has valid arguments for accredited trial run instructors, once you sort out who they are accredited to. Maybe over time, on the quieter days in the yard, that could morph into day courses for anyone interested in learning about boating on the broads. They would however have to be cheap enough to make people want to travel to the experience. In the meantime anyone in the La-La land of skippered boat hire is of course at liberty to put their money where their mouth is and start their own yard. On the subject of Boat Manuals I offer the following from Richardsons 2020. 85 pages of pretty solid info and not a difficult read at all.
