  2. 40 years ago I was told Martham had craned their boats over "that bridge" because of high water. Is this true or an old wives tale?
  3. Posted May 5, 2020 Talking of Jimmy Hoseason 30 years ago I had booked a canal boat 10 months early and when the brochure came through the boat layout had been changed and was no longer suitable. A phone call arranged for a change with no problem but I was concerned that if I had not studied the new brochure I would not have known. In those days there was a letter in the front of the brochure signed by Jimmy Hoseason. I did not know if he existed but decided to write to him explaining my concerns. Three days later I received a phone call from him thanking me for my letter apologising for not alerting me and saying he was pleased to know we had found another boat and wishing us a very good holiday. Three months later we went on the holiday and returned home on the Saturday. The very next day the phone rang it was Jimmy asking us if we had a good holiday and if everything was o.k. That was for me someone who however big his company was still considered his individual customers. Those were the days.
  4. Or Martham Boats, I have seen heavy weights on the bank by the bridge they used when clearance was tight.
  5. 9.48 Saturday. Just watched Humber Bridge approaching Wroxham bridge on BarnsBrinkcraft webcam. Have a great day.
  6. Two not mentioned as far as I can see that we have hired from are Neatishead Boatyard and Stalham Yacht Services.
  7. What would happen if you did this at Ranworth?
  8. Caught Escape To The Country on BBC 1 today. If you can find it on catch up you may find parts interesting.
  9. Hi Mouldy. When my cholesterol was high my GP informed me porridge for breakfast appeared to help some people. Tried it every day for a few weeks, cholesterol level no longer a problem.
  10. Some woods boats are out today, have just seen Gleaming Light and possibly Sovereign Light on the web cams at Norfolk River Cottages.
  11. Hope this link works. The article also mentions the bomb at Great Yarmouth https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1732287/bomb-derbyshire-evacuation-bolsover-marlpit-lane-explosive-mine
  12. Interested to see HW calculate fuel usage by dipping the tnk whilst Richardsons refuel the boat. Two comparable yards I wonder what system other yards use. I know Aston at Beccles used to refuel the boat to calculate fuel usage 25 years ago.
  13. Stamps without the bar code need to be used by January next as well.
  14. If you were handed a bill for £400 at the end of your holiday you must have used the fuel deposit as well. I assume that would mean approx. £550 of fuel used.
  15. Hired Aston Nelson a number of times from Beccles in the late 80's, GRP hull and wooden top. Although not the newest of hire boats always in great condition from a very welcoming and well organised yard
  16. When we first came to the broads in 1980 and for the next few years with Blakes we had to pay for a pump out but got a full refund for one pump out at a Blakes yard at the end of our holiday on production of the receipt.
  17. I received this today, clearly one young person understands.
  18. Bring back stern cockpit boats. stern on moorings were a doddle! Our first hire was an ocean 30, great boat for all round visibility.

    Thanks

As someone who is unable to visit the Broads I would like to say a big thankyou to the contributors to this forum. During these difficult times it has been great to view photos and read discussions about more pleasant topics. Hearing about the old boats being carefully and lovingly maintained is fantastic. The wonderful photos certainly bring back happy memories although there are views where notification of where they are would be a great help to me. Thanks for the amazing historical knowledge some of you have and are happy to share.
  20. SwarR mentioned Ferry Maria, we hired Bronze Emblem under her former name River Hart from Staham Yacht Services in the 90's. The headboard one side was slightly under the side deck but never presented a problem, again I am over 6" and the bed was fine. We never suffered from condensation on this boat but having the island bed worked well for us.
  21. When we first hired in 1980 we had no heating, no fridge and no tv! We had a great time plenty of jumpers, milk in a bucket of cold water and cards and dominoes.
  22. When we first went in 1980 Blakes pilot was just inside Herbert Wood's yard. There was a chalk board on the side of the hut where you put your boats name so you were taken through in order.
  23. Socrates mentions a larger non-refundable deposit. I do not see how this helps. A large refundable deposit might well make a difference. I remember the owner of the first yard we hired from complaining when deposits were changed to non-refundable as it removed the incentive to look after the boat.
  24. Sorry RumPunch but how dare you suggest someone is elderly at 75 years!
  25. It is many tears since I have been to the Broads but I have never seen anything like the "boat" moord to the left of the Barnes sign. Can someone tell me what it is and what it is used for? Thanks.
