  1. Thinking about exploring this broad, I noted the navigation marks but from the look of the water (could be misleading I know) it didn't seem like shallow water around them. Can one of the experiences locals advise what their purpose is? many thanks
  2. I have some sails which need some small repairs and alterations, any recommendations for the greater Norwich/Horning etc area? many thanks Nick
  3. I think the blade jib is a good idea maybe even setting up a self-tacker if you can. The one bit that caught me out badly as a newbie under sail is that Wroxham broad gives the impression of a good open space for sailing but the top end has a huge amount of weed in it, can slow you down quite a bit!
  4. sorry but does anyone know the name of the marina or berth provider where the yachts are in South Walsham? thank you
  5. Yes I am from down under! maybe an outrigger is the answer
  6. thanks JM, I do suspect I will end up lying on a low pontoon with some sort of wooden frame tied to my arm!!@
  7. Being a newbie I was pondering how to remove the small growth from this year under my Cornish Shrimper. Normally I could pick a half tide point on a beach and give it a quick brush. Someone mentioned to me a part of Salhouse broad I could come pretty close in shore to and perhaps quickly brush there, almost a beach like area. Just curious and looking for local knowledge
  8. There is no doubt over the power giving way to sail rule but I think most of us would agree that it's also about sharing space with courtesy. What surprised me about Sunday is that the yacht skipper either through lack of skills or being bloody minded, put themselves in the path of the motorboats and paddlers leaving them with no option but stopping in a large queue. I don't know but I'm sure all the experienced people on here know that a golden rule is giving yourself as much space as possible before any restricted manoeuvre regardless of whether power or sail. the Horning stretch certainly seems to give a lot of entertainment !!
  9. I've always been a believer in being as courteous as possible on the water, restricted space included and in my limited experience on the broads (being a newbie) everyone so far seems great and friendly. Sunday was interesting and we motorsailed gently from Acle to Horning, the broads yachts made a great sight and it seemed like the large number of power boats coming the other way were entertained by the sight. As we cam into Horning a more modern sailing yacht decided to drop its sails heading straight into the line of advancing motorboats, kayaks and paddle boards creating chaos, the person at the helm shouting at the power boats to give them space. They had so much space off to starboard yet seemed to want to make a point with the power boats. Hopefully this sight was very much a one off and most are happy sharing a beautiful space together.
  10. thank you very much, it's just getting use to the nature of the area so local expert tips I'm very grateful for! It's a Shrimper 19 btw TheQ
  11. Hi a newby to the broads and slowly exploring with a Cornish Shrimper (small sailing boat) I was very surprised to get caught in the growth at the Wroxham town end of the broad, of course I should have been watching closely but was too taken with the new area. Slightly surprised there are no markers I presume its commonly known? thank you
