    Flooding

This might be a stupid question/observation but has the water level at Yarmouth yacht station changed owing to the rain? (At low water) I cannot believe it has.

    Flooding

I would suggest that all the boatyards have to tread very carefully. Whilst they may disagree with BA policy on some subjects, they would not want a face off with the planning authority, nor to cross swords with the organisation which decides toll rates.
  3. I'm expecting my satnav to say "he looks local, ask him"
  4. Marshman, Please accept that I realise the record levels of rainfall has caused the flooding, however had the rivers been dredged as they should have been, that excessive water would have been out at sea by now., frightening the cod! This is not the first time that the EA has been found wanting regarding dredging, it is however the first time to my knowledge that flooding and navigation issues have crossed swords. Again in my opinion, the lack of dredging at the lower reaches of the Bure has negated the EA's efforts for flood alleviation at the PH part of the Thurne. The flooding may, no, is caused by unprecedented levels of rain, but the continued water levels cannot be.
  5. For as long as the BA and the EA do NOT start working together, neither party need do or spend anything.
  6. As I always understood it, it is the BA's responsibility to maintain navigation and the EA's responsibility to control flooding. Neither has, in my opinion, succeeded in their objectives, though they have managed to achieve a position whereby they can blame each other for today's shambles. Am I wrong?
  7. Once again I see the Broads being compared with the canal system. "Chalk and cheese" as the say, though I agree totally with the final paragraph of the last post.
  8. Great news. When does the BA start their daylight robbery regime restart?
  9. Yes Dom, you have kindly made my point. The original post was about drinking and helming. In reality the helmsperson is the safest person on board, drunk or sober. I am not condoning drink driving on boats but would argue that it is no way as dangerous as has been suggested. Sure, the idiot cruising from the Isle of Wight deserves all he gets, but it's no reason to start over reacting, and looking at the Broads safety rules. A boating holiday is, within reason, a safe holiday. When common sense is left at home then there will be consequences, but we should avoid spoiling many peoples holidays because of the few prats one finds.
  10. "Back when I worked in a yard, we used to see 1-2 deaths most years on the Broads and invariably alcohol played a part in most." I do not for one second dispute that, but I wonder how many of the 20 to 40 of those over a period of 20 years, were drunk WHILST helming.
  11. As you all know, I am but one small step away from total abstinence, yet even I can see that if the Broads Authority fails to destroy the broads as a holiday destination, bringing in tighter rules for "drinking and helming " will do the job for them.
  12. "The RNLI have a big undercover display of a whole range of lifeboats." Never knew RNLI did undercover operations.
  13. Less a MAMIL, more a SOFIJ. (Silly Old fart In Jeans)
  14. My aquafibre 42 has an internal transducer aimed through the Hull but not with drilled holes. I believe it to be accurate enough for broads use and see no reason sea work would be significantly different.
  15. Well well, what a funny old week this has been. On Friday (9th Feb) a friend of mine told me he was buying a new bicycle. Nothing wrong with his old one, but he wanted a 'step through' frame. He is the sort of chap who always buys quality stuff so I was interested. I'd been thinking of getting a bike for a bit of exercise. (Been reading too many of Grendel's posts) So, here's the progress. Monday, agreed price and shook on the deal and was pleased. Tuesday, went to see the machine, paid my friend and was pleased. Wednesday, met my friend and collected my new toy, and was pleased. I cycled about a mile and a half which took me to the Sutton Staithe Hotel where I was so exhausted I stopped for a pint. dismounting, I found my legs had turned to jelly and I did well to stay upright. After just one pint (yes honest, only one) I resumed my maiden trip staying on the back road I managed about a half a mile, uphill, and my legs failed, just lost all strength. I managed to ride up onto the pavement before falling off. I was not pleased! Feeling rather silly, I was lying on the ground with my bike still between my legs. That's when the traffic stopped and it seemed the entire population of Stalham had surrounded me making sure I was okay. Really kind of all of them, and yes in reality it was three motorists, but they managed to get me back on my feet and I was able to convince them that I could walk home from there. I abandoned my bike and managed to walk the remaining half mile or so back to my boat, which when getting there, I pretty much fell onto the bunk. I was completely exhausted. I had no idea I was so unfit. Today (Thursday) I retrieved my bike and put it in the back of the car. I bought some lights for it and tomorrow I'll go back to the cycle shop and buy a helmet. Also tomorrow or at least soon, I shall cycle round Richardson's yard a few times to get my confidence and balance back. I shall embark on a bit of a regime to get some strength back. Little and often I believe is the way to go. The only real excuse I have, is a touch of arthritis in my hip and lack of feeling in my feet (type 2 diabetes caused that. ) I also want advice about a company called "Swytch" which supplies kit that converts ordinary bikes into electric bikes. If any of you know about this, please do tell.
  16. Andrew, yes Griff is insane. Mad as a box of frogs, but that has nothing to do with Great Yarmouth.
  17. What clearance at Ludham Bridge?
  18. I'm another vote for Gt Yarmouth yacht station.
  19. I fully recognise that there is an age where children see fishing as a game they soon tire of, then start to see it as a valid sport. Also I have long held the belief that if rewarded with the smallest of victories, they develop a liking that lasts a lifetime. What I have more difficulty recognising is at what age that switch over happens. For me it was 11 years old. Nowadays if I see a youngster seriously angling, I am delighted and will happily chat to him/her. This is way out of character for me as generally I'm a "seen but not heard" one when it comes to kids, actually, not seen either !!. Now I've typed all that, I've forgotten what I was about to say!!! ?
  20. I wonder what would happen at Sutton staithe if BA charged there
  21. I agree, sometimes 'nothing' is good (at the risk of sounding like "cool hand Luke")
  22. I heard that question and burst out laughing. Wonder if Jenny Morgan was watching.
