  1. Totally different? Really? If there’s a mooring assistant aren’t they rather similar?
  2. Seeing a trend here? Government cut the money going to councils. Everyone sought savings. North Norfolk decided they didn’t have to collect boat waste, and left a vacuum that had to be filled by the hire companies, and through the goodwill of Parish Councils like Ludham who have a boat waste bin. I’m afraid that the BA are just joining in the trend, but never forget they were charging before, so the principle was established. It will end up, in my view, with. £10 charge everywhere. It’s not desirable, it its also not the end of days, which the reaction of a few would suggest it is.
  3. They’ve been totally refurbed. Very nice, very clean. Access by Apple Pay or card.
  4. You paid before at Yarmouth and Norwich, as the old joke goes, “we’ve established the principle, now we’re just haggling over the price.”
  5. Just finished our annual Southern Broads trip. Monday to Saturday in the best weather you can imagine. We’re sailing in an electric boat so have slightly different needs to others. Headlines. The Southern Rivers are absolutely marvellous in June if the weathers nice. Moorings are plentiful and of numerous kinds. There are many pubs with moorings - some still free. Plenty of places to charge up. What did we pay for? Norwich. Arrived at 7 to be told the facilities all closed at 8. Really disappointed with that. Surely a coded door on one loo could be provided? As a historic boat we put human waste straight into the river so there we would always use public loos when we can. At Loddon we paid for the loo and shower (Parish Council I assume) 20p for a p and £2.50 for a shower. Paid happily but noted they also shut at night. (The man who came to clean in the morning said he had cctv of a Bloke peeing outside. Had his car reg and he would be fined. (Hoped it didn’t cover me going in the river at 3am, but as I’ve said that just cuts out the middle man) Felt a bit sorry for the bloke - needed the loo - found a public one. Shut for night. Used bushes. I do think that if you do pay you might expect basic services (a 24 hour loo specifically) General points. Broads in fine shape. Endless moaning about every single thing the BA does is mostly just moaning Paying for things (paid £8 at Ferry Inn Stokesby very happily - moored right outside the pub) will become the norm. You pay for car parking don’t you? You’ve paid your Road tax haven’t you but you pay to park near the high street or at the hospital? Paying for things is how things get the money to survive. If the economy is screwed and the pubs can’t get enough staff I’d look to how you voted rather than blame the BA. I live on the northern broads and the situation here is pretty much that same - although the lack of pubs is a much greater problem. So if the pub charges you to moor I’d be a bit understanding. Lose two or three more and things would be seriously worse.
  6. They mowed it on Tuesday. Funny how they wait for the grass to get long before mowing it…..
  7. Not convinced that matters much. Lots of interest in who get to Potter/Hickling/ Acle etc. Also most boats have lots of friends and family following them. Nice to know where they are.
  8. Hence my original question. The trade-off is that it would be a much better spectator event with tracking.
  9. Isn’t the above saying that crews can download software onto their own mobile so the cost is negligible. The time to arrange is not though I accept.
  10. So a direct contradiction of the “£1 long lease” story.
  11. Really have to come back on this one... FIRST The Sandford Principle doesn't exist in Law. It was finally enshrined in law in 1995 Key words in the 1974 National Parks Policy Review Committee report are “priority must be given to the conservation of natural beauty”. Although these words have been used in policy-making and decisions for many years, they were not a legal statement. When the principle was eventually translated into law in 1995, its interpretation and impact were subtly changed. The Environment Act 1995 s62 (1)(2) states: In exercising or performing any functions in relation to, or so as to affect, land in a National Park, any relevant authority shall have regard to the purposes specified in subsection (1) of section five of this Act and, if it appears that there is a conflict between those purposes, shall attach greater weight to the purpose of conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area comprised in the National Park. SECONDLY, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY You say "As for Sanford, if the principle is adopted, it will spell the end of navigation on The Broads. Is this what we really want?" Yet the "Sandford Principle" (1995 Act) is in play in the other National Parks, yet there are lots of boats on Lake Windermere, and look here: https://www.facebook.com/recordsweek/?locale=en_GB They set water speed records on Coniston every year Your statement is ridiculously UNTRUE!
  12. What would be needed to make that useful in this circumstance. Crews could download an app but who would create the active map that would only show 3rr boats? Or is that not necessary?
  13. The map is n longer there, but it showed their location in real time. I wonder what software/technology is required? Perhaps someone from Herbert Woods can tell us.
  14. The Herbert Woods boat Filibuster was being tracked and could be seen on their website https://www.herbertwoods.co.uk/three-rivers-tracker/?fbclid=IwAR05MvkQepnVTLsw273mHRWDa3UIOeQfwMz0C0Y2QCOeK6fIORDfITbLRgU
  15. Q, in the days of Social Media, wouldn't it be worth finding a person to "live report" the race? Would it be considered wrong to say which boats had gone left or right at Thurne mouth?
  16. Good God. Why does it always have to be about the Broads being, or not being a National Park. I’m so utterly sick of this obsession. What it is about, is the waterways being available to everyone who wants to use them. It’s that simple.
  17. I think you will find that events are arranged with a great deal of planning, thought and consideration. I’ve just submitted an Event Plan, Event Application, Hazard Assessment, and Traffic Plan for an event later in the year. Those docs go to NNDC, police, BA, Traffic Management and a dozen other people. We have procedures for disabled parking, lost children, medical emergency, weather events, and boat fire. We have £10m insurance. The idea that events like this pop up is quite wrong
  18. So, an untrained person has been sent out of a boatyard with a 6 ton vessel. They don’t know the rivers, they have no experience of navigation, tides, wind or boat control. They are, by definition, incompetent. And the paddleboarder is the problem?
  19. I remain hard-line agnostic about the BA, the Broads look to be in reasonable shape and I couldn't care less about the National Park issue. I simply don't believe that anyone at the BA really wants to restrict boating. But, I think the creeping spread of mooring charges is totally wrong. We pay for the moorings in the tolls. Paying at the Yacht station shouldn't happen and Ranworth and Reedham continue a trend which will never be broken. It will be all the others next. This is a complete change in the BAs business model and one I will write to the BA and my MP about. Remember, the BA received £440,000 extra from Defra after the Toll rise was announced. I agree it would have been 'good politics' to drop these charges.
  20. Ah, so all pubs have to do is be exactly like each individual wants them to be. I’ll text every pub landlord/lady right away. They will be thrilled that the NBN members have solved all their problems.
  21. Humans kill off Otters, change predator/prey balance. Humans put Otters back. Fisherfolk get angry. Why?
  22. We swim often in Womack, we assume the boaters are all blind, untrained, lunatics, so have never been close to a boat. It is common here to see paddle boarder, swimmers, canoeists and anyone else not driving a 45 foot 6-ton boat identified as dangerous, but it is a sad fact that recent accidents, including fatalities have been where inexperienced boaters have behaved foolishly or recklessly. Having talked to wild swimmers, they seem perfectly capable of staying away from boats.
