if it’s any consolation it hardly stopped raining since we have been back in Cornwall

hope you are enjoying Lightning despite the weather

will you be joining the AGM on Saturday?

    Susan

    Hi Sue,

Yes, we plan to, providing the internet signal is OK. Having a great cruise, though rain on and off every day, not too bad though.

Lightning was spotless when we came aboard, and Dave said they left her as they found her, so many thanks for taking care of our lovely boat.

In fairness, the only time in 6 years we've heard of any complaints was when somebody used one of the outside cleaning services.

In a 'National Park" yes, most definitely, even the "type" of paint used must be scrutinised.  :default_gbxhmm:. Did I say National Park?.

We too were on our syndicate boat also moored at Brooms that week and agreed with Helen staying put was the best option.

we hired a Broom captain 2 years ago and really liked the boat.

And we're on your syndicate boat now, it's raining again

  4. If you're going to moor southern Broads, how about Hippersons opposite Beccles YS, or Derby's Quay?. Then of course, there's Loddon, Greenaway Marine, Denny Walklins yard, or the old Aston yard, not sure of the name. Another one is Pearson Marine at Reedham opposite the top end of the New Cut.

  5. Seeing as you're there for two weeks, I would recommend staying above Stokes by until you have gained your confidence for mooring. Where mooring is concerned, take it slow, against the tide, and don't be afraid to ask someone ashore to help if necessary. Also, as mentioned by somebody above, find a clear less busy stretch of river and practice several times.  One other bit of advice, try not to use too much throttle to turn quicker, often, going from forward to reverse and back several times in a confined space without using full throttle will often be a lot safer and turn the boat round easier.

As has been said, slow and easy.

No laws to my knowledge, but Timbo is our expert. As part of TOS we have no naming or shaming. Others have different rules. You agreed ours and we reset all auto logins when we changed the TOS and you all had to agree them. So please follow them. You have expressed your opinion and it has been noted Neil. If anything has happened to another boat then please report it to the authorities and boatyard or PM them if known.

Then that makes me ask questions, who owns the forum, and who decides what the TOS should be?.  Is the forum "owned" by an or some individuals, and does that or those individuals decide who they want as mods and appoint them, as well as deciding what the TOS should be, or do they allow the mods to decide what's best for us members?.

  7. 15 minutes ago, grendel said:

which laws do you suggest we break to relax the TOS? the TOS are structured around the minimum necessary to comply with the law.

So why are people allowed to post such clips on YouTube (not Facebook as someone mentioned) if it's breaking laws, all forms of public media and fora are bound by the same laws, and naming and shaming IS'NT against the law.

Anyway, suppose it was a boat being rammed by a boat full of drunken idiots, that boat being owned by a forum member living several hundred miles away, and knew nothing about it because "wemust'nt film it" and nothing got reported. I for one would be extremely grateful to anybody naming and shaming if it was the only way to let us know that Lightning had been hit, as I'm bloody sure any other forum member would if it was THEIR boat.

it breaks the forum naming and shaming clause as both the boat registrations and boat name of the offending vessel are clearly shown, what is allowed elsewhere is beside the point, its not allowed here.

We'll, if that's the case, I think the TOS need to be relaxed, absolutely no need for over zealous modding in my opinion.

Yes I saw that last night on YouTube, if it's allowed to be viewed by a billion people+ on the worldwide Web, why does it break the forums TOS?.

    Sat 26th.

Up early quick tea and coffee it was still pouring with rain not quite so windy though it took a surprisingly long time to pack the car and sort the cottage out , we discovered that we were supposed to take our rubbish down towards the Marina Bar area Mick went out was quite sometime came back saying it was all flooded and ha had had to wade through it to get to bins ,not ideal in fact not really acceptable in my opinion.

We finally left just before 10am the time we had to go by ,owning a Holiday cottage ourselves which we have gained visit England 5 star gold accreditation for  I’m afraid I am rather judgmental about the ones we stay in , this one although great location was not in my opinion quite up to standard.

Left Horning road still flooded and set of to Brundall where we had arranged to meet Simon the chairman of the syndicate to give us our induction into Lightning.

Had a lovely few hours with him his enthusiasm is infectious gave a thorough hand over then left us to unpack , we made the decision the other day because of the weather to stay on the mooring tonight and possibly tomorrow will see what the weathers like.

All unpacked I cooked the chilli it was blindingly hot I had bought “hot” chillis in Tesco and used 2 not really thinking they would be hot, Mick as normal thought it needed more heat glad I had some guacamole and sour cream to cool me down, different cooking experience as it’s gas and I haven’t cooked by gas for years,I burnt the rice ! Well the bottom layer was like a crispy pancake , but being the man he is he ate it anyway .

Made up the beds I had bought the duvets already with the covers on same  as pillows so didn’t take long was cosy and warm aboard and we enjoyed our first evening ,I woke up at 2 am the wind was really gusting so the boat was making a lot of noise ,I got back to sleep and Mick treated me to tea in bed at about 6:30.

Not sure what the rest of the week holds just taking the boat out to get the feel of her we have a mooring and table book at surlingham ferry on Tuesday so many of you have recommended it apart from that we will see where we end up it’s really a getting to know the boat exercise more than anything else.

Feeling very envious of you now Sue, we've got another two weeks before we take Lightning out again, and we haven't used her since March. I really can't wait, as with the year we've had, we're desperate to get afloat and try to chill out. Have a great week, and enjoy yourselves.

Ps, remember it's the AGM in 3 weeks, so have a good look around, see what like or don't like, and consider things to bring up there.

What is it with this forum recently that people are not allowed to ask reasonable questions, or express an opinion without being ridiculed.

I have today been accused of being anti hire yard, making accusations of professional incompetence and all because I asked questions, expressed an opinion or joined in a discussion. There are a couple of people lately who will swear the sky is Yellow, just because I have dared to suggest it is Blue. I won't name you, but you know who you are.

You don't have to agree with a persons opinion, but please phrase your replies with dignity and be reasonable.

It's not clever to make references to Fred Carno's Army, Noel Harrison, or La La Land. If you cannot be respectful, then please don't post, or at least think twice before posting.

Its something that I think about often. It was a stupid  mistake. My thinking at the time was that the boat on the other side,I thought  was closer  then it was.I raised  my head to get a better view, that's when I connected with the bridge. When we went back I did so from inside the boat. Not easy very poor visibility. That said much safer. So to answer your question .No extra training wouldn't help.A mistake I won't make again.

I think the two important questions to ask in your case Ian are a), how many times have you been under Ludham bridge without incident?, which the most likely answer would be "numerous", and b), would any extra training be necessary?, which the answer would very likely be "no".

We're all human beings, not robots or computers, so we have human deficiencies and make simple instantaneous errors of judgement as in did above, no matter how many years of experience we have, which goes on in everyday life.

I work in the aircraft industry and have done so for nearly 30 years. It's the 2nd highest regulated industry in the world, and you can't even fart without all the official recorded documentation, which also makes it the most expensive industry in the world. Please don't start hinting at over regulatory schemes to make boating, especially hire boating too expensive for all but the wealthy.

    Weds 23rd.

A very lazy day today after a cooked breakfast Mick tried fishing but it started to pour with rain he kept trying but it didn’t give up just a few minutes here and there then it started again I just sat watching from inside happily reading my book we were going for a walk and a pub lunch but thought better of it as we felt no need to get wet when we have food here to eat.

Nothing caught and he said there were no bites so he gave up ,we have lamb chops in fridge from Ludham butchers so I’m going to do a roast with runner beans and carrots with chops and roast potatoes although I have loads of eggs ,Micks sister gave me a dozen from the farm next door to her I have no flour so no Yorkshire puds today.

We have been thinking about food for the weekend and as weather looks a bit colder we think we will make a homemade Chilli for Saturday we have rice with us ,think we may stay on mooring as high winds forecast and it’s our first ever trip on Lightning .

Look after Lightning, we're aboard her 2 weeks later. Hopefully, we'll meet up at the AGM on zoom on the 17th. Enjoy your first week aboard.

If you're concerned about the weather being extremely windy, our home mooring is very sheltered.

    Fri 18th.

So the last morning has arrived sad to end such an enjoyable time afloat but give back the boat we must, both up early having tea and coffee , it’s only an hour back to the yard but we set off at about 7am going very slowly ,I stay down finishing packing away kitchen things and doing a clean through , I go up just as we pass Ranworth Dam and take over steering so Mick can finish packing up the fishing gear.

All too soon we approach the Marina perfect mooring unlike yesterday so much so as we started the manoeuvre one of the ferry guys came up to the key heading to take a rope but as Mick had it perfectly controlled he just shrugged his shoulders smiles and walks away lovely sign of approval.

Car parked behind unpacking of the boat done we report the faults that bow thrusters issue a dodgy blind that won’t wind up and that we broke a glass all logged handed back the 4 unused electric cards of the 10  that they  supplied at beginning of holiday said farewell and drove away.

We had never done more than a week so not sure if we would like it , of course we did it still didn’t feel long enough, however we did not eat out as much as we would have normally so I did more cooking than I wanted only simple meals but still more work than I needed.

Love Silent again a great boat for 2 expensive of course but really suited us with such a nice rear cabin and forward living areas ,no real downsides to the boat apart from the Bow thruster ongoing issue, we had no problems mooring anywhere we went but that’s because of the way we like to use our time sail early very early some mornings do 2 , 3 or 4 hours then find our mooring as “most” boaters are leaving having had breakfast whilst we were out on the rivers, it was busy in some parts but also peaceful in others loved it all.

We now have a week in Horning in a cottage in the Marina before stating the new chapter in our boating lives with our first trip out on our syndicate boat staring Saturday 26th out of Brundall for a week, I will let you know how we get on very much a just getting to know the boat exercise both looking forward to it greatly.

    Hi Sue,

Karen and I hope you have a really great first experience aboard Lightning. Some time I will tell you about our first week aboard, what an experience that was.

Enjoy your first time afloat on our lovely boat.

    :default_icon_wave:  :default_welcome:  to the forum.

Just thinking outloud, do people consider where and when the AGM is held when signing up? Do they vary year on year?

Our AGM (Lightning syndicate) is always held at Stibbington Station (at the start of the Nene Valley Railway) in their meeting room in October, basically for operational seasonal and central location reasons, though this year, because pof the cv farce, we're having an "on-line AGM via something called" zoom". Our allocation system is now automated negating the need for a time consuming pot luck draw, which allows more time to discuss operational issues etc. If you buy a share, you automatically take over that members allocation, which gives you a week every 12 or 13 weeks, and then each members allocation rotates each year, early, mid, late, then back to early etc. This system is the most fairest available, and means each member is treated the same. Each owner can have Co owners to a max of 3 (I think?).  Weeks can be swapped, subject to agreement with the other associated member.

I could go into detail, but you would be better off calling our chairman on the number on our website, though I wiil still be happy to try and answer any questions if I'm able to.

    Good morning everyone,

As a Midlander, I have been frequenting the Broads, hiring craft for the last 15 years and having been extremely fortunate to retire early in life I am looking for either advice or recommendations on a boat share to make the most of my spare time. The craft I would require would have to have 3 full bedrooms (not to include the interior cabin), prefereably pet friendly but this is not a deal breaker.

I look forward to any assistance you can give.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dave Bridges

I forgot to say, in the meantime, I will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

    Hi Suzuki biker,

As you may have guessed, I'm also a biker, AND a share owner in one of the boats Alan mentions above, "Lightning". We are a self managed syndicate, and our boat meets the requirements you stipulate. For more information, please look at our website www.lightningcruiser.com

My wife and I will be aboard from Saturday October 10th for a week, so if you're on or near the Broads  (Brundall) at that time, we'll be glad to show you aboard.

  17. Seeing as I'm in the aircraft manufacturing industry, I actually build things with my hands, so the question is a bit irrelavent..

Karen however, the downsides for her working from home are increased energy costs, gas central heating, and electricity, using our box room as free office space, using our laptop for work, and my time required to set it all up, which being one evening should be payed for at overtime rates. Then there's tea / coffee, which we get free vend at work, the use of our broad band, the list goes on.

The only up side for Karen is she DOES'NT need to use her car.

I`ve noticed a lot recently where people are all too keen to be critical when it suits them, yet say nothing, or argue against their own point when challenged with evidence to the contrary on other issues.

I went for a walk today with my husband and eldest son, along a lovely wide stretch of footpath & bridleway that runs along the Grand Union Canal. It was lovely to be able to get out of the house during this period when most of us are cooped up working from home, or just stuck at home.

There were lots of other walkers and cyclists out, but everybody was very good about keeping their distance. It was quite funny to see really...how we were all keeping as far apart from one another as possible.

We went as far as a new marina complex that is being built. The actual marina has already opened on the east bank of the canal and I was amazed at how many boats are already berthed there. Construction is still underway on the opposite bank, a new footbridge has been opened and some flats are complete and occupied.

The information board and a notice above the canal mention a planned offshoot from the Grand Union Canal to provide a link to Bedford. I wonder if that will ever happen and how it will be funded? The info board mentions that there will be a number of water-parks along the route, so maybe that's to attract investment.

We turned back and crossed over to the lower section of Campbell Park (which runs down from the Milton Keynes Shopping Centre to the Grand Union Canal), found a quiet bench and had a picnic before walking home again. This was near our bench...

What I can't understand is you posted this on Friday, and nobody has yet shown any outburst of absolute disgust at the fact that in picture 2, you show a boat underway?. Had this been a pic of a boat underway on the Broads, people would have been demanding the arrest and imprisonment of the offending crew. That's what they're doing on Facebook, "they" being some members of this forum (you know who you are), dare I say a hint of hypocracy?.

You and me both Helen, I managed to go up the Stracy Mill being as it was all internal stairs, at the lighthouse at St. Mary's Island in the northeast the stairs are open internally I only managed the first 8 foot and had to come back down, my sister in law had to do the same. Tan & Jon didn't have an issue.

    Regards

    Alan

    Me too.

Some years back, Karen and I went to a lighthouse, can't remember whether it was Pirtland bill or the Lizard. The stairs spiraled inwards, as they would, and the first part was open, about 15ftish, and then there was about 8ft fully enclosed, the above that it was all open. Needless to say, I got about 10ft up the stairs and chickened out. Karen wouldn't go up on her own, so that was money, which was tight at the time, waisted as they wouldn't give us a refund.

  21. my advice is if you are looking for a boat on the broads, get a proper broads cruiser. you could pick up some really nice ones for £15,000, albeit a bit old, but half the fun is personalising it. If sea use is a must have, then you will have to sacrifice living space because of their design and shape,

This is a smart looking little boat, but quite cramped inside, and (imho) not really comfortable for a weeks holiday. But with something  like a Bounty 27, or ocean 30, or similar boats, you won`t have the speed, but considerably more living space.  Speeding across the water is fun for a short while, but costs a fortune in fuel, whereas a more economical and leisurely 5 mph cruise through the trees and marshes, looking at amazing history, scenery, and wildlife is far cheaper, and far more relaxing.

    Just my opinion of course?.
