  1. Neil, just out of interest have you ever been involved in this type of incident? Because I have and until you have been involved you could never understand the complexities and difficulties faced.

These types of incidents are fortunately rare and the resources and skills are not readily available which is why the specialists are called.

Thoughts to all involved and please wear a lifejacket at appropriate times-give your rescuers a chance.

  2. Bearing in mind that the signs carry the crest and slogan of the Norfolk Police, would you chance not knowing about a Norwich City bye law that might result in you finding a fixed penalty notice on your boat when you returned to it? .

Yes, but I have "insider" knowledge ;-)

  3. You could also just bring the inflatable one without the outboard. You then don't need insurance and the toll is much cheaper. I bet there is not much change out of £40 to hire one.

  4. You don't need to show your insurance to anybody but when you sign the toll you are signing to say that you have insurance and I THINK the public liability requirement is £2m.

I insured dinghy and outboard for 12 months for about £37 with Nobel Marine. £37+£17 toll+£10 of petrol=£64 or about 4 hours day boat hire.

We use ours for two weeks each year and for more than 4 hours.

A couple of weeks ago we all get in ours and spent the day above potter Heigham for the first time, there was a bit of breeze on the Broad though and going into it was a bit wet!

  5. I take an inflatable dinghy and outboard when we go. You will need insurance as a condition of the tolls. Short toll for a dinghy and an outboard is about £17 a week.

It does take up a lot of room in the car though and the outboard goes in the roofbox!

  6. Thanks for the reply Alan.

Could someone tell me what is just to the right of the helm in this picture?

    Thanks.

That's the control for torpedo tubes 1-4. Only to be used in the event of a sail boat "zigzagging" on the Ant.

    ;-)

  7. Two weeks is a good balance and does allow you to do other things.

Neil-is there anything in the syndicate agreement to say you cannot sell part of your share to a new owner? It happened quite a lot on ES.

The other thing I like about the RB syndicate is that the boat is winterised and not used during the winter months.

Is the "standard" 12.5 owner syndicate bought one of the shares and retained it the boat could be winterised jan-mid feb, buy two shares and you winterise Dec-Mid Feb. There would however be an increase in costs to the other owners as moorings, insurance, tolls and if applicable management costs are all year round costs but the cost of changeovers would reduce and presumably so would the amount of breakdowns with less usage?

  8. The Lion is not my kettle of fish either!

Sorry for jumping in your thread but...

We left Gayes Staithe this morning and Ludham about 11:30 was absolute chaos. It was overcast, windy and threatening. As we approached the bridge we had to hold station as 6 (six) boats came through line astern. No problem for us (bow thruster!) but slightly problematic for the queue behind.. Eventually a gap but a Royalls boat coming round the bend by LBB. We are lined up and give it done welly, hard on the horn we are going through! Bow reaches the bridge when this big Barnes Lullaby bow comes across the bridge "exit" (they had been tied up on the moorings sorting out dinghy and screens etc totally out of sight). We are full astern and hard on the horn again. They get the message and back off. As we come through the Royalls boat is waiting to transit the bridge with the 6 foot aerial extended on the roof... Totally ignores my pointing and shouting but eventually the LBB guys get his attention.

We lunched at Acle bridge Pub and proceeded across Breydon at about 17:10. Slack water was 18:20 but that was a bit late for us. Never been across early before but judging by the amount of boats going up the Bure before we got to Yarmouth many do. Raced down with the tide- difficult to maintain steerage and then a real slow plug across Breydon struggling to make 4.5mph. Got to Reedham just after 7pm but no moorings. Carried on upto The new Hardley Mill moorings where we are the only boat.
