Hi Vaughan, thanks for the interest and the idea! 

Managing the topper at the mast is no problem. It really is because we are used to having the topper as a near to hand emergency brake option in the cockpit, as we always have had on other boats. 

We looked again at Hunters and wondered if we could learn from their rigging, which is where this thread had its genesis.
