You need to up your game Mr. G, these guys are doing it big time....

This is the replica building of the boat buried at Sutton hoo, if you visit woodbridge it's well worth a look at, they hope to launch in 2 years time.

It's being built from trees not bought planks, serious stuff!

Take your toy (oops, I mean model) boat with you as there's a model boating lake nearby with a cafe beside, breakfast was nice there today(served till 12.00).

the wiring is slowly getting tidier, lack of space and in one case waiting for the correct switch slowed the process, the switch arrived friday, what i needed was an 3 position switch, on/off/on to connect the battery to either the light circuit, or the solar panel, or turn it off altogether, this has now been wired up and positioned just inside the forward companionway.

its getting neater but this lot still needs tidying.

so as Griff intimated on another thread, progress has been slow, life has got very busy for me, and my weeks disappear in a haze of work- we are getting really busy just now, and the inbox that supplies my jobs is rattling through 40 emails a day with new jobs, divided between 6 of us thats still six jobs a day each.

on top of that my weekends are now divided up into shopping for myself and once a fortnight shopping with my dad (mum stays at home) which solidly fills another day remaining time at the weekends is divided between household chores and everything else (including sorting through the pile of stuff that was left behind by my ex, and my daughter when she left home).

but this hasnt stopped me totally, I have been trying to work out the best motors and other ancillaries for the mudweght winch, this has involved a lot of testing of the various bits and bobs I have to hand, this culminated in the arrival of the motor I want to use for this, its tiny N20 motor with built in reduction gearbox was one I had, but it was a bit reluctant to run smoothly, so after initial tests a new one was ordered and arrived today, this has good torque, and with a gear reduction down to 60rpm (metal gears), I think I am there, i tested the arrangement today, a cheap 20A speed controller, powering the motor to give forward and reverse. as there is a worm gear the drive stays put when topped.

next step is to make the winding drum for the winch and test its lifting power, and then sort out a power supply, unfortunately this needs to be below 9.4Volts for the speed controller, but i have some adjustable voltage regulators so I can run that from the main battery, once I have turned the drum from some brass or aluminium.

Besides which, just how else can mini ‘B.A’ remotely mudweight?

I had heard that he was working on a mini Griff as a sideline. The animatronics were not a problem and had those working to a T. It was getting the swear words in a Yorkshire accent that were the problem. And being the pedant he is, he went for the electric winch.

Well, I made a timeslot and spent 1 1/2 Hours working on the  lathe,  and now have myself a winch drum, still have to drill out the retaining set screw and tap it, but another day's work (and ok there was cleaning that wasn't done)

It was a busy day, and I had to pick the daughter up as she had been  working away from her office in ramsgate, so I didn't get a lot done, I did drill and tap the 2.5mm thread for the fixing bolt, then while my tea was cooking, I drilled the 1mm hole to secure the anchor line to

OK, so today I finally got to do some testing, I set up a voltage regulator to keep the voltage below 9.4V (the rated voltage for the speed controller) and connected everything up using a couple of small brass lumps roughly equivalent to the mudweight, here was where I hit the first snag, the winch would lower it, but raising was a different matter, the worm gear in tthe gearbox stalled out, this caused the voltage regulator to start getting warm, hmm. further tests were done using the variable voltage from the power supply, and I could lift half the weight of the brass mudweight, so maybe i need to make one from aluminium, this will at least match the chrome appearance of the real one. i need to think, the alternative is to hollow out the existing brass one.

second problem, i have decided to use the built in mounting holes in the motor/gearbox, so I got out my small hardware, I found 1 bolt the right size, none of the M2 bolts I have would fit, no it was an M1.5 x 15 that  would fit, but i dont have any nuts to fit that bolt or a tap to tap the plate in that size, so i will get some M1.5 hardware (I have m1 bolts, but the longest is about 6mm)I have BA taps that small, but no BA hardware smaller than 8BA (2mm equivalent) and though I could easily make some 12BA screws and nuts, it would be a little fiddly.

OK, thats got the bolts and nuts ordered- M1.6x20- stainless steel apparently is the size, That or m1.4, while I was at it I ordered several 3 tap sets to suit my small size metric fasteners (I bought longer bolts than I need in a pack of 50, as I can always cut them to length. less than the cost of a pint for the bolts, nuts though were not as cheap- in fact the tap sets were cheaper than the nuts
