Back On The Locks Theme

Recommended Posts

I've not read all the "There are locks on the broads" posts but I'm sure as a boy when biking to Bungay from my Beccles home to swim in the river around the back of Outney Common there was a the remains of a lock in the woods (It's still there). Surely this suggests that water traffic went upstream further than Bungay staithe (where i'd suggest there would probably have been a lock) I think navigation would have at least reached up to Earsham.. Not an expert so may wrong.

I can only find reference to three locks. Gelderston, Ellingham and Wainford. The last two are now sluices.

However there were numerous watermills above Bungay Staithe so it could have been the remains of the race for one of these perhaps that you found.

I don't go that way much but canoed it a few years ago.  The river now by-passes the structure but it looked every bid like a lock to me.  If I get a chance I'll have another look.
