Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Dear Boatshield Partners,

I would like to start by wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

It is approaching that time of year again when many boat owners will be locking up their boat and leaving until the spring. Please take a few minutes to check the security of your boat before you leave and it.

We know that the majority of outboard engines are not secured to a level which will afford them proper protection and it is vital that we try to address this. Padlocks and chains may seem effective but, in most cases, these can be easily cut without causing a disturbance.

We are still finding many engines which have no security at all. It is worth checking your insurance policy to make sure you are compliant with their requirements.

The most obvious answer is to remove engines when not required. Although this may take time and effort, it must be preferable to buying a new engine.

If this really isn’t possible, then make sure you have proper recognised locking systems for your engine. Get a second opinion or ask your Crime Reduction Officer. There are many systems on the market to suit all pockets and your local boatyard can advise.

Consider fitting a Security cover. These work by removing the top cowl from your engine when it isn’t in use and fitting a security cover, you devalue the engine for thieves and we know from experience that engines with covers are not always their first choice.  These are available to buy form numerous locations in Norfolk and Suffolk and details of these locations can be provided if you email boatshield@norfolk.pnn.police.uk

If you are a boatyard owner or manager

We would ask that you take the time to look at your customer’s boats and tell them if you think they need to improve security.
