One hazzard was, if a smoker was in the vicinity of the carbon tetra chloride fumes, it would produce some really poisonous compounds when heated, ie when passing over the heated cigarette. 

Best thing they did was to ban it, but it was used extensivly in the 1970's for degreasing circuit boards prior to soldering, and as a flux remover afterwards.  Fume extraction in those days was rarely used...

Indeed it was in use in the brass fire extinguishers fitted in the green goddesses and some RN motor boats right up until the end of the seventies. Was great for getting stains out of uniform clothing too.:shocked
