My Day

Yesterday a down river race From Woods Dyke to Thurne Lion Dyke.

Woods Dyke was fun, Hire boats doing all sorts of strange things, though luckily, the chaos cleared just before the starts.

The big broads cruisers had first start and just disappeared, their tall rigs picking up the wind above the trees.

Five minutes later it was a combined keel boat and dinghy start, a White boat, 3 Rebels, several Yeoman, Blue Moon and a lonely Wayfarer.

BM made a mid fleet start, and kept up well for the first half mile, then the taller rigs of the big keel boats started to tell and they pulled away, BM stayed with the Wayfarer for some time in a painfully slow race in light winds, once we got past the Horning water works the Wayfarer started to pull away, it is 7% faster on handicap..

Once finally clear of the trees at Ant mouth then BM started to sail better, this weeks modifications included two extra jib sheets to the tip of the jib club, pulling on these allowed a proper goosewing and much better down wind performance..

At Thurne mouth we turned right down to a buoy , rounded that and then tacked back to Thurne Dyke, BM was close enough to the finish to see the last Yeoman finish in the distance and the Wayfarer.

After lunch  the race back, the wind had got up by this time and pre race it was a bit entertaining. One Broads cruiser stuffed itself into the reeds as the safest place to go.

Shortly after as BM proceeded towards Potter to avoid the Broads cruiser starting area. BM found herself between two bowsprits 3-4 foot each side.. Until the windward one tacked BM was trapped, First the leewards boats bowsprit hit the main sail of BM, as they tried to stay off the reeds, then as I steered up to avoid the reeds the outer Boats bowsprit hit BMs mainsail. Some how BM popped out from between the Bowsprits and when I looked back both Broads cruisers had stuffed themselves into the reeds.

Shortly after they extracted themselves and all departed safely at the hooter.

I put BM into the reeds myself, as I needed to do an adjustment to the rig which I couldn't reach from the seat.. On leaving it was discovered the new jib sheets meant I could goosewing the Jib against the wind and easily backed out of the reeds..

Five minutes later and it was BM's turn to start, no hassles BM made a very good start... First even, yep we were in the lead for about a hundred yards till the entire fleet swept past with their bigger rigs and sail areas..

When we reached the turning mark BM was about 100 yards behind, so then it was tacking up to Thurne Mouth and turn left up the Bure. Long tack, short tack most of the way. In the Strong clear winds the Wayfarer was pulling away, even though they were doing more tacks than BM, once we got to St Benet's straight BM sailed the whole length very Close hauled, no tacks, while the Wayfarer and a couple of other boats ahead could be seen to be tacking often.

Not surprisingly BM caught up a lot, and this continued all the way to Cockshoot Dyke, at that point we reached them., and after a couple of attempts, got past before the corner at the start of Horning village.

Finally crossing the Woods dyke finishing line about 50yards ahead of the Wayfarer..

Here I am at The Holiday Inn Express in Donny yet again replacing yet  another floor. At last they have agreed to fit bifold shower screens in due course. The maintenance manager and his assistant have trialled and fitted one. Took them four hours.

Can I fit two a day on my Todd they asked?, there will be eighty eight to fit!  Chuffin Eck. I’ll have to have a think. That will take me forty four working days assuming I can manage two a day. Thinks I’ll fit one in August and see how I get on

Hi Griff,

That's nothing to a man of your caliber.

I bet after the first half dozen, you will have found the easy way and be getting 3 or more done per day.

That really depends on a few things. Such as are the fixing surfaces all plumb, the amount of silicone used during fitting what is there which will need to be removed plus the quality of the new doors.

Good luck.

Well, the last three actually. I have been wandering in Suffolk.

Then I went to Bawdsey, Ramsholt, and Shingle Street. Does anyone recognise the "Yesterday" film locations? :-

Yesterday I had a walk at Woodbridge, had lunch in Aldeburgh and then returned to the hotel for afternoon tea and dinner. Drove home this morning via Reedham ferry to miss the towns. Wallet suitably bashed!

Fantastic photos Chris! You packed a lot into 3 days and it looks wonderful, I would like to see those exhibits myself one day! 👍

They are there until October, but you must book. It is an easy run if you go via Reedham Ferry : Beccles and join the A12 Nr Blythburgh. You miss Yarmouth and Lowestoft or Oulton which are just a pain InTarse

So, I had to call in at our big Adsa in Donny t'other day there as I was passing as I needed to pick up a thankyou gift.

One bottle of wine and a bunch of flowers.  Straight in and out, only I got 'Caught' on my way out by four gorgeous Golden retrievers guide dogs (Ok, one of em was a black un).  Made a fuss of all four of em, that cost me a tenner into the charity bucket.  That's £2:50 per fuss

They 'Saw' me coming eh?

well that was different, this morning 9 am departure, destination parents to give my dad a lift to his cataract follow up appointment, i sit outside waiting, and he comes back out, he has healed so well in 4 weeks, can he come back at 2.15 pm to have the other eye done.

we were also doing some shopping so popped in there en route home, as we left a bulb failure warning came up, no problem i thought, i will sort that while my parents have lunch.

off to halfords for the bulb, plug in my registration and get a pair of the recommended h7 bulbs.back out to the car (i will always fit a new bulb while still at the shop, just in case i got the wrong one.

changing the bulb means pulling a locking pin and removing the headlight, this is quite easy, except now came the dilemma, i could see how to get to one bulb, easy, but the other?, finally found the removable patch, about 2" round, on the top of the headlight unit, eventually got it to turn and pull out, now faced with the bulb, 3" inside at right angles to the hatch.

eventually get it out, its a h9 bulb, back into the shop, purchase correct bulb, replace bulb at fingertips, plug back in and test, yup, i had needlessly replaced the main beam bulb, fortunately the first bulbs i had purchased were correct for dipped beam, so headlight out, and replaced the easy bulb, all back and working.back to parents, and i had to administer the requisite eye drops as mum couldnt squeeze the vial hard enough. then back to the surgery, another hour and a half wait then take dad home.so basically today i left at 9 got home at 4,30, and got nothing else done, good news, dad has had his second cataract done, just 4 weeks after the first, and was already seeing better, after 80 years wearing glasses he can finally see without them.

That must have been a great experience. Elton played at Norwich recently as well. I was kind of tempted, just to be able to add him to the short list of iconic performers I’ve seen.

What was your favourite song of the night?

Joint faves were Candle in the Wind and Rocket Man

What was really special was the Watford FC connection, being a fan back in the day, in my youth

First time I have been to back Vicarage Road in over 25/30 years - it has certainly changed in that time !
