What Yards Are Happy To Hire To One Person ?

There may already be a topic on this, if so I apologise for starting another

what boat yards are happy to hire to one person ?

I may be boating alone for a week next year due to wife’s holiday entitlement

I have hired single handed from richardsons and Eastwood whelpton.    I think Barnes brinkcraft will also hire to as will  Freedom on a couple of their smaller boats

I’ve seen many of Robins blogs and know he hires single handed, but didn’t know if he’s a special case, supplying video walk thru etc

Richardson's definitely do, myself and several others have hired single handed.  I know Herbert Woods do not but not sure about others.

I have often seen Silver Melody (from Silverline of course) out and about with one person on board. I would think a smallish aft cockpit cruiser like that would be ideal to hire for a solo cruise.

Martham Development are happy to hire to one person. I have taken all the centre cockpit cruisers out on my own before and they handle very well and are easy to moor as long as you pre organise your ropes.

Good question Snowy. Yes, as others have said, Richardsons are fine with it and I've hired single-handed from them on 3 occasions. I also hired single handed from Freedom in 2012 when they were still at Horning. 

Herbert Woods are the opposite unfortunately. I rechecked with them earlier this year when I visited and it was a definite no. What their reasoning is, I don't know, it makes no sense to me.

Hello, I noticed these posts are 6 years old so the insurance situation may have changed for singles hiring.  
I am seeking to hire a little boat for just myself and 2 dogs. Richardsons don’t, nor Hoseasons nor Leboat.

I am struggling to find anywhere on the internet that does boat hiring to single people. Any luck anyone?

Hi JudyC,

I believe you need to approach the boatyards direct rather than via Hoseasons. As you say Richardsons no longer allow solo cruising. Whilst I cannot guarantee this for 2023, Barnes Brinkcraft, Bridgecraft, Pacific Cruisers and Martham boats are all worth a try and I believe have hired to solo parties in the recent past, not sure about Ferry Marina. Please bear in mind they may have certain stipulations, size of the boat, previous experience, previous hirer etc however no harm in asking.

I know someone who hires solo from Horning Pleasurecraft so I would recommend looking them up.

you could try Martham boats, I have always hired solo from them, though they do expect some previous boating experience (as you would expect)

Yes they do, with experience, I hired solo from them last Autumn. You're correct about the others you mentioned.
