Broads01 Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I spotted this on eBay, not a company I knew ever existed. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F162697227480 Quote
Stationerystill Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I have not heard of this company either. Has anybody got any information on Houghs Holiday Hire of Thorpe? I am doing a presentation next year on the Thorpe Boatbuilding industry for the Thorpe History Group and this yard is one I have no information on. Quote
Vaughan Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I have never heard of this myself. The land on the island opposite Thorpe Gardens used to be Hazells boatyard and they were one of the original members of Blakes, before the War, but I have no knowledge of any others except Harts, Jenners and Wards. I don't remember the name along Bungalow Lane or Griffin Lane, either. Quote

trambo Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Bit of guess work here but Hough's did survive the reincarnation of Broads Holidays into the Helmsman Association and in 1974 the fleet was at Corig Cruisers yard. Assuming the Corig boatyard was that of Hough's then it was down Bungalow Lane, next to Jenner Bros. This yard was marketed by Blakes after Helmsmans demise, became Kingfisher Cruisers and is now Freedom. Fred 1 Quote
Oddfellow Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Corig was a little further down from us. Sandra who used to run it with her family lives locally though I don't see her often now. Towards the end of their run, they built cruisers for the French systems AFAIK. 3 Quote
Stationerystill Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 I will go and ask Jack Jenner who used to own Maidencraft if he remembers. My talk on Thorpe Boatyards is Feb. 15th 2018. It will be advertised on our website when the programme is published at www.thorpe-history-group.org and also on our Facebook page. 1 Quote
C.Ricko Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 the best person to ask would probably be the person selling the item, his name is Stuart Press and his contact details are on the advert, he is a collector and knows his stuff. Quote
Regulo Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 It seems from the catalogue they were based at the now defunct Marina Keys site. I certainly never knew of this. Some companies I've never heard of, either. 1 Quote
Broads01 Posted October 9, 2017 Author Posted October 9, 2017 I thought I recognised the building in one of the photos as that. Quote

Some companies I've never heard of, either. Broads Holidays was established in the 1960s and always based in Great Yarmouth. Prior to moving to Port of Yarmouth Marina their address was at Hamilton Road. A connection with Thorpe is that when it became Marina Keys most of the hire fleet (Line Azzurro) originated from Kingfisher Cruisers. As far as I can know there where five hire fleets based around Great Yarmouth over the years. At the Marina there was Harlan Cruiser, Viva (which originated or moved to Loddon. Can't remember which.) and Line Azzurro. Bure Slipways was a Hoseason yard based between the bridges, now a car repair establishment although the slipway is still there. On Breydon itself was the Cobholm Boatyard. I often wonder what first time hirers thought on arrival after all the leafy photographs in the agency brochures! Fred 3 Quote
Boatingman Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Hi Fred Have to agree with you in Particular the Cobholm yard sitting on the edge of Breydon water 1 Quote
Regulo Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Thanks Trambo, the only one of those yards I'd heard of was Line Azzuro! Quote
C.Ricko Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 was Breydon marine not on the Cobholm yard? Quote

SPEEDTRIPLE Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Looking at the pictures of the inside of the Brochure, Morgans Brig and all the others from Pirate craft, some of them were in Buccaneer Boats fleet, did Pirate craft become Buccaneer Boats?. Quote
