Londonlad1985
Looks like the latest disruptive technology is coming to Norwich! Having just worked on a similar scheme with a firm called Urbo in Walthamstow I hope OfO make a success of it. You can never have enough sustainable transport options. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/ofo-to-launch-in-norwich-1-5256356
Daddy Mouse
Would be really good if some were near the moorings.
SteveO
I hope that they get more use than the rental bikes in the car park at Horning. I have only seen them taken out a few times this year.
RumPunch
I was listening to the manager of the scheme on the radio yesterday morning. Whilst the theory is admirable, I found him a bit too evasive on questions such as where the outer limit of travel would be
Londonlad1985
I know Joe the UK boss and as this is a disruptive technology i think they are quite nervous about early government intervention as there is little legislation for these types of schemes at the moment. There will be no outer limit on where the bikes can be taken. However app users are disincentivised by a points system. The green boundary (attached) is the outer limit for the points system. brandenjg
It didn't take long. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/new-ofo-sharing-bikes-vandalised-and-thrown-in-river-wensum-1-5274176
stumpy
Didn't something very similar happen to the white bikes in Amsterdam back in the 'good old days'? Lovely ideas in theory that fell apart once the general public became involved.
Londonlad1985
Amsterdam's hire bikes are relatively unsuccessful due to high private bike ownership. They have many hire shops that hire bikes for tourists. I think it's great that you get piles of un locked private bikes at station during the day and come evening they they are all gone and the systems mostly just works. It's similar in Copenhagen. Londonlad1985
If you look at any city that has mass cycling you get a messy mass of bikes at key destinations. I hope British local councils and the public accept this if they want mass cycling! (I think mass cycling is a good thing)
JennyMorgan
Where to locate an ofo bike: http://the-lentil.com/2017/11/get-the-latest-ofo-bike-locations-on-our-new-app/
Londonlad1985
To revive an old thread.......That didn't last long.... what with the Withdrawal of Urbo from London and the notable absence of MoBikes at Manchester's cycle city conference a couple of weeks ago I wonder if the UK is not ready dockless bikes?! ExSurveyor
I saw one leaning against a bus stop in Brundall last month. It was there for over two weeks and nobody nicked at.

Guest
It's funny how ideas like the "white bikes" (or 'free bikes') which work well in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna and other European cities. When imported into the U.K. always seem to fail and are quickly abandoned, I guess it's the British psyche of 'I want one of my own, not one I have to share'... TheQ
There was one in Hoveton for a couple of weeks cluttering up the pavement, I've regularly seen then Around Norwich usually abandoned blocking pavements...
Cal
We have the Ofo scheme in Sheffield. It is a joke. Most of the bikes end up vandalised and strewn in the most inappropriate places, including the cities many watercourses.
smellyloo
Well it's a sad reflection on the British mentality ...... it seemed like a good idea to me. Maybe when we have a complete safe cycle network they will make a return .
ranworthbreeze
Cycle schemes are fine is cities/towns where it is fairly flat, Sheffield is a none starter with its 7 hills. The likes of Oxford and other similar locations may be a goer. Regards Alan
Simondo
I agree the UK seems to have a more hostile booze culture that likes these mindless acts of vandalism or violance!

As I look from my office window I can see two of these yellow bikes, both vandalised, one hung in a tree and the other strewn across the footpath. It seems Sheffield is not ready for this type of scheme. A much better scheme is used in Lincoln where the bikes have to be returned to a docking station or the user continues to be charged for the hire. Much more sensible. trambo
Probably out on a limb here but bicycles and cities are a nightmare to me. They ignore every rule of the road, including pedestrian lights and plague pedestrianised areas and don't start me with those on a Deliveroo mission! grendel
it could be worse, you could be driving through london and find yourself stuck behind my work colleagues and I cycling round in a pair of these, oh the upset mercedes drivers... 1
