In my opinion it’s a real shame that another person feels the need to leave because they feel they can’t openly express their views.
Personally I like the idea that we can have open debate but maybe that puts me in the minority.
I don’t agree that commercialism of the Broads is bad but I think it’s sad Soundings feels the need to leave here because he does.

I agree everyone is entitled to their opinion.     What a dull old world it would be if we all agreed with each other.    What a dull old forum this would be if nobody is able to post  what they feel , within reason.        All I can say is Clive and Co have very broad shoulders and if you see,    as we witness earlier in the year , some of the carrying ons by the hirers they have very forgiving and understanding natures.    I agree with the award.    Well done Richardsons staff.

"Commercialism" Used often, mostly little understood. To focus on profit, some define regardless of quality amongst many other slight variations in definition. Without the growth of the hire industry over the many years and the money that they have brought into the area and ecology I often wonder what the broads would be now. The organisations that balance the ecology of the area do so with funding from the many businesses from small one man bands to the larger businesses. If people were not attracted to the area there would be little funding to look after the place. The person who runs a corner shop, a cafe etc etc are they not guilty of commercialism also... do we berate them!

As long as there is a demand there will be people / businesses to fill it. I know for a fact that Clive and Richardson's care very much for the area that they operate within and run a very good business. Do they make profit yes, are they excessive at the cost of all other things, then the answer has to be no. They would not invest so highly in boats that are better for the environment in which they operate.

L&Ks to all.

This thread was about a business and all of its employees celebrating success, a reward for their hard work and investment of time and money. If we don't have anything nice to say may I suggest you do so on another thread. Also ensure that you are familiar with the conditions that you agreed to uphold when you joined.

Congratulations to Richardson's!

Clearly what they do works for them and for their customers, not only on the boating front but in other areas of leisure. We did laugh when we saw the Richardson's bowling alley on the road that leads to our caravan!

Personal choice means that we prefer the smaller yards and have only hired from them once. But that's not to say that we wouldn't go back if they had the right boat at the right price.

And just a thought... as they were Hoseasons awards did they only encompass the companies who use Hoseasons for their bookings.

I read your original post and totally disagreed with your comments and posted to that effect

You stated at the end of your post you where leaving no one on this forum put any pressure on you to make that statement

That was you choice

You can and should have your say no one disagrees with that provided you comply with TOS

I have never hired from Richardson`s so cannot comment on the award other than to say any company as successful as they are must have got things pretty near right in terms of customer satisfaction.

Without extending the argument it should be remembered that as unique as the Broads are they are just a part of the UK and as such open to all to enjoy in whatever way they choose, the only proviso is that they do so without interfering with other peoples enjoyment hence the By-laws and as long as we adhere to those there should be no problem.

I didn`t see Soundings original post either so this is just a general observation, I am sure most Private owners started of as hirers so without the hire fleets there probably wouldn't be many of us non locals who love the Broads so much actually aware the area even exists or what it offers, apart from supporting the local businesses without our tolls the upkeep of the navigation would be impossible and without the contribution from the hire fleets private tolls would increase so much that many would not be able to afford them and the boats we own wouldn`t have been available to buy and a lot of the services we require wouldn't be available.

The point of all that is to remind us we are all intertwined and that for anyone to enjoy what`s available we need the whole not just our own little piece of heaven and we all need to work together and appreciate each ones contribution in whatever form it takes.

Fred

Soundings,

I too didn't read the post that has been removed, but from subsequent comments I am lead to understand that you feel inclined to leave because your views are contrary to those of the majority and that your membership here is of little value as a result.

In my most arrogant opinion, your membership is of the highest value here BECAUSE your views are contrary to those of the majority.

Hold your position and argue your points., Tell Peter that the broads should be a National Park. Tell Timbo & co. that God wanted boats to be made out of trees so the bloody things would rot. Tell me that I'm an arrogant little s**t who doesn't know anything. Tell us all how it is! Yes you will be shouted down sometimes, but it is by debating with those with whom we disagree that we all learn.

Your counter points will enrich this forum as well as ALL our lives, yours included.

I agree with you MM as long as it stays within the guidelines.

Perhaps this topic wasn't/isn't the place to discuss commercialisation of the Broads.

I know threads drift but this one is about celebrating a well deserved award.

I leave the forum every time I close the computer and, like a bad smell, I keep on returning.

Time for a lie down I think.

This year was our first time hiring from Richardsons. We'd been there many times, to visit showers, Tesco etc, and saw it was huge.

As visitors from another yard their staff usually helped us out mooring.

This year we hired 3 times from them and there was nothing at all to criticise. All the staff we met were great. Admitted we were not there at the busiest times but it seems they are well set up to deal with the busy times efficiently.

Already booked for 2 holidays next year.

Good staff, modernised fleet, well done.

i missed the post but I don't take offence at much,

I believe the Broads should not be reserved for the elite,  everybody should be able to go on holiday.

i would guess that the commercialisation of the area was mainly post war

there are half the number of hire boats with a much shorter season that there were so I would  say that the Broads is less busy then it was,

not sure what the framework is but speed limits have been lowered and there has been plenty of restoration works to river banks, flora and fauna , buildings etc.

I've hired at both quiet times and peak times, most recently in August thus year. Indeed they are very well set up for the high volumes of people, having something like 60 boats on a peak turnaround day. Only once in 15 hires have I had a mildly delayed takeover(all of half an hour, deary me). That was at October half term 2016 when they'd been let down by some cleaners and hence at least one of the managers was mucking in with cleaning to get the boats away - superb.

Hired 6 times in the last 16 months from Richardson's and on every occasion have had top class customer service. Have used other yards in the past and can't really fault the service we have received but I can honestly say that on our return to Richos I have been blown away with the service, cleanliness and quality of the boats. Someone there has their finger on the pulse and the award, in my opinion,  is well deserved. Small cogs in any business are as valuable as the large ones and Richardson's clearly appreciate this. It shines through as you pull up in your car and are greeted by all the staff. As an employer myself I take my hat off to the staff around, what must be, a great management team.

I congratulate Clive but I must also congratulate ALL the staff employed by him.

A very well deserved award

Glenn
