CambridgeCabby Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 We are looking to replace the rotted wood in our bathing platform hopefully with the more traditional slats as opposed to the current one piece stop gap she came with . Does anyone know and can recommend where we can source suitable wood and also where we can get it cut to size please . shes currently with George at Ludham for other work but replacement wood isn’t one of his areas of expertise attached is a not very good photo Quote
Bound2Please Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Burtons the avenue brentwood Simon, they supplied all the new decking for a mate of mines ocean going classic cruiser mate 1 Quote
CambridgeCabby Posted April 28, 2018 Author Posted April 28, 2018 Alternatively we would also consider fitting a solid piece with horizontal slots routed in Quote
BrundallNavy Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Tim Collins in Wroxham, he can cut to any size / thickness for you. I would go for something like Iroko or Mahogany Oak will go black after time. 2 Quote
BroadAmbition Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Consider plywood, seal it then dress with Dek-King? Griff 1 Quote

Griff That was an option we considered after seeing the finish you’ve achieved on BA, but that said you are a craftsman unlike incompetent me Quote
BroadAmbition Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Craftsman? - That's stretching it a bit innit? There's a chap around the rivers that fits Dek-King professionally - Nipper knows of him, he might be able to do it for you? Griff 1 Quote
Guest Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Traditionally teak slats but iroka should be fine given its from the teak family , Tim Collins will no doubt be able to supply the necessary material . It's a big ask of ply even resin bonded to not delaminate given its going to spend more time wet than dry . No doubt there is a plastic composite alternative these days which while being just fine for the job but to me wouldn't have the same appeal as timber , then again I'm biased given my carpentry and boat building background . I will attempt to measure up what I need and go with your suggestion I think Quote
grendel Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 I have used greenheart as a raised planter surround, 15 years later and not a trace of rot. its a very rot proof wood used for sea groines and piling. one word of warning, its murder to work with and splinters will fester horribly. - the pieces I have were offcuts when they were installing new sea defences at whitstable Quote

Smoggy Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 For my bathing platform and steps I used a wood/plastic composite from a place in okehampton, I got some samples first and slung one in the parts washer at work for a week, 60 degrees and a detergent mix didn't soften it so should be fine, machined well too. https://www.wpc-decking.co.uk/ Quote
