MauriceMynah Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Hi all, This is not broads related but... This is a tricky one to describe so I’ll start by explaining the situation. One of the friends I am staying with is a 90 year old lady who’s eyesight is failing. So, We need a telephone with very big buttons. The house is a converted Chapel built in the late 1700s and converted to a dwelling back in the 1930s. The walls are thick and the building is long and narrow running east-west. The telephone landline comes into the house at the far western end but the room the lady chooses to ‘live in’ is at the eastern end. Running a telephone extension lead the length of the house is impractical. All telephones with really big buttons are corded and require plugging into the phone socket. All cordless phones have buttons too small. All mobile phones have even smaller buttons. We need a big buttoned phone at the opposite end of the house from the socket. Well that’s the problem, Any ideas?... pretty please. Oh, and a PS,,. Whilst the lady is pretty smart and on the ball, she is not up to learning much in the way of new tech, so tablets and things is a non starter. Alzheimer's is starting, but that's not bad for a 90 year old. Quote
High6 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 How about utilising the house mains wiring with this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/RTX-Wireless-Phone-Jack-Slave/dp/B000R567NM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525854361&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+telephone+extension Quote
WherryNice Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Do they do range extender type things that plug in the electrical sockets like you can get for wifi? Quote
Bound2Please Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 John, we had this problem with mother, well still do, the answer is rather simple really, we got her a mobile with voice recognition on it. She simply says to it ring "Charlie" and it does. Quote
grendel Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 how big do the buttons need to be, you can get these mobiles -http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/audio/phones/big-button-mobile-phone/denver-big-button-gsp-120-senior-mobile-phone-with-sos-quick-call-button-sim-free-unlocked-torch-radio/ Quote
grendel Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 or this phone with picture buttons and a cordless handset https://www.amazon.co.uk/Geemarc-Amplidect-295-Corded-Telephone-Answering-White/dp/B079Z5T5RV/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1525856158&sr=8-8&keywords=cordless+big+button+phones Quote
High6 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 On reflection, the voice-over-mains network would not be helpful in an emergency such as a power failure, which could be just a blown fuse. Quote
vanessan Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Could you get one of the big buttoned mobiles which has speed dial buttons? You could then programme in the main numbers she uses and put a different coloured sticker over each button. Quote
ExSurveyor Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 I use voice over wire to put phone sockets in the other end of the house, not often we have a power cut these days. Quote
High6 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 True, we've only had 3 mains brown-outs in the last six months, and a couple of breaker trips when a bulb blew, but isn't that when an elderly person might want help or panic most? Quote

I was referring to my house, I can't remember the last time we had a power failure, obviously if the ladies house is prone to outage the system would not be suitable. I have a 94 year old living with us, she struggles with the tv remote so I do understand the problem. Quote
