Retsub Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Hi Although i often read the posts on here I very rarely post, as after we sank our cruiser (see original post, I kept a low profile). Anyway to cut a long story short, our family has discovered an old photograph album showing some old photographs of the broads. i do have a couple of questions about them, but i wanted to be a bit cheeky if no one minds). I have long admired the font of knowledge about boating an the broads but i wonder if i can cheat a little and ask if anyone has any knowledge of the boat in photos 5 and 6. most of these photos were taken around 1925 - 1930 1 photo says Pleasure Boat Inn Hickling 2nd photo says Lingalonga (which i assume is a holiday bungalow) with Hasbro lighthouse in the background? any idea where this might be? 3 Photo says Wroxham, does anyone recognise it? 4 is at the Pleasure Boat Inn 5 and six is a Boat which was purchased by a great uncle of mine Stanley Eustace Fletcher. The photo says the boat was called Grey Ghost when they purchased it in 1925, Understand it was stripped down and repaired and came back as MY Eujoy (Eustace and his wife Joyce). We were told that Stanley Eustace Fletcher served as a midshipman in WW! and as a naval reservist in WW2. We understand he served on the small boats flotilla at Dunkirk. Eujoy was originally moored at Bourne End in Bucks. Any thoughts on what type of vessel Eujoy was, what her eventual fate was would be greatly appreciated. PS as well as these photos, i believe we may have more photos taken around Horsey Mere? if anyone is interested. 2 Quote
Chelsea14Ian Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Great pics not sure, sure someone like Peter mat be able to help.Dont feel bad don't forget Uncle Albert got sunk more then once in dry dock. Ian Quote
Smoggy Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Pic 2 looks like happisburgh lighthouse (not hasbro) so should be easy to find on a map, sorry have nothing useful on the rest. Quote
Retsub Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 Thanks Smoggy that makes sense. The pictures have mostly been abbreviated to Hasbro , but I can see reference to Happisburgh elsewhere. Thanks Ian, as well Quote
ChrisB Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Haisbro is an acceptable spelling and the village is often refered to as such. It comes from the infamous sand bank approx 9nm off Happisburgh. I believe that the last Haisbro lightship was taken off station permanently in May 88. 1 Quote
ChrisB Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Looking at the photo, my guess is the bungalows are in the area where Lighthouse lane, Whimpwell Street and Lantern Lane meet. I say this due to the aspect and angle of the Light Keepers cottages either side of the lighthouse, also the bungalows appear on lower ground than the lighthouse. Quote
ChrisB Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 If my assumptions are wrong above and the bungalows were on the seaward side of the lighthouse and not the village side their site would have been taken by the sea. As late as the 1990s it was possible to drive along Doggetts lane from Cart Gap all the way to the village. All the houses to the rear of the lighthouse in this 1990 photograph are gone. One reason why the beach between Cart Gap and Happisburgh is so good for finding "Sea Glass" the area of later development at the bottom of the picture is where I think your bungalows were sited. Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Thanks Chris, I really do appreciate you taking the time to look at this for me. Will try to find more photos to try to get a better perspective. will try to get iome dates as well. Quote
Vaughan Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 The third photo is taken from Wroxham Bridge looking over what is now the NBD yard, with Jack Powles original yard in the background. 5 and 6 look to me like a first war "torpedo boat destroyer". These were the original destroyers, built to overcome the threat to capital ships from fast torpedo boats. The destroyer later became a larger design of fast escort, which was, itself, designed to destroy capital ships! Can't remember who designed them but it may have been Sopwith. Quote
Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Thanks Vaughan Thanks for the info on Wroxham and The Torpedo boat destroyer. Wow! Quote
Chelsea14Ian Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 I always enjoy seeing old photos,Sadly some parts of the coast have disappeared. Many parts of the broads have not changed guess that's part of the reason we love the broads. Quote
Turnoar Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 The gentleman on the right of the group in front of the PB could be Stanley Nudd who those older than me may remember from Herbert Woods. How smart they all look, Jaguar took some publicity photos there for project Utah which I happened across on aronline.co.uk. What I can be certain on is that my great uncle Alfred Amis and aunty Gwen (nee Turner) were running the pub at the time, the second stint for Gwen as my great grandparents, James and Eliza Turner ran it for a spell when she and her brother James were children. I wonder if they had a plate of egg and tomato sandwiches waiting on the bar when they went back inside to recharge their glasses? Quote
Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 thanks to everyone for their great comments. Although Stanley and Jo Fletcher werent related to me the photo was taken around 1935 I believe . The group outside the pub does have a few details under the original, as follows Pountney, Jiban ,Jack, Jo (Joyce Fletcher), and Eustace (Stanley Fletcher) Quote
Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Sorry meant to say were related to me, but this was taken around 20 years before I was born. i didn't even become aware of them until recently Quote
Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Even more photos photo 5 is titled Happisburgh 1 Quote

TheQ Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 If you notice the in Happisburgh lighthouse pictures, the two lighthouse bungalows are on the seaward side of the lighthouse as are the chalets so they've definitely gone over the cliff. Quote
Retsub Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Its titled outside the Pleasure Boat Inn. Apologies I was under the impression I had added titles. Photo 1 is Jo on the forward Deck of MY Eujoy photo 2 is Titled The Gennel 1934 photo 3 is blank photo 4 is Titled Happisburgh photo 5 is Happisburgh Photo 6 outside the Pleasure boat Inn Hicklng Quote
ChrisB Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Photo four is Whimpwell Street looking towards The Street. The house with the car outside is still there. Quote
TheQ Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 16 hours ago, MauriceMynah said: I can assure you, the car has now gone. And replaced by lots of cars waiting for the Primary school, even though they've built a car park round the corner.. 1 Quote
MauriceMynah Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 Well it was a bit unreasonable expecting all those kids to get into that one small car. Parents were so thoughtless in those days. 1 Quote
