VetChugger Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 In years gone by I fondly recall the smell of wax polish especially at my Grans. I was looking for some wax polish today and all I could find is proudly deemed to be odourless! I don't want odourless! Neither do I really feel persuaded by the aerosol varieties. I want to smell that old furniture polish again! Anyone know of any that isn't just souless wax please? 1 Quote
Ray Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Although I can't answer your question VC I had to say thank you for bringing back a similar memory from my own childhood Quote
Chelsea14Ian Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Not sure I have an answer, maybe a good old ironwhere shop.We always call into the shops in Loddon and Stalham.Theres always odds and sods, you won't find in the chain stores.Let us know if you find any. Quote
Lulu Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Im fairly sure my mum used Antiquax and I always knew it was a Friday as a kid when I got home from school by the smell of polish :) Quote
grendel Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 you can still get the sheridan beeswax wax polish in supermarkets - not sure if it has been desmellified though. Quote
grendel Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I would imagine anyone who still has the mansion polish will have had it for years, I think my parents still have the tin they had when I was little. Quote
ranworthbreeze Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Hello Trevor, There are several types of wax made by Colron, Wheelers, Briwax . There are even waxes that are slightly coloured that can help with covering up scratches I even have a tin of Aristowax that was made in Norwich called Wood Silk Lavender Polish. You need to search for these online or visit a good hardware shop, as already suggested the one at Loddon is worth a visit, one of the few places I know that stocks walking stick feet, these are ideal for use on our boarding ladders to protect the hull. ChrisB Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 You can buy Lavender Wax Polish from Amazon. Mansion Polish can still be bought but it is not the formulation of yesteryear and is more of a prof. Finishing product. 1 Quote
retired Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Find a local beekeeper, if he doesn`t make it he will know who does locally. I just harvest the honey. Quote
MauriceMynah Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Most good antiques centres sell traditional beeswax polish. Quote

grendel Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 well they should smell of beeswax, I am just trying to remember what olfactory delight Mansion Polish delivered, was it one of the lavender ones? or more beeswax smelling - actually I think it just smelled of floor polish. Quote

Probably contained some Hydrocarbon solvent to aid drying that is now banned, that would aid the smell. 1 Quote
Islander Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 These people may be worth a try if you can get into norwich. Worth giving them a ring. Colin http://www.classicfinishes.co.uk/products.html Quote
SteveO Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 If you type "wax polish" into Amazon search you will see a myriad range of polishes, some scented, some not, at a huge range of prices too. You pays your money and takes your choice. I always like the faint smell of lavender in a room where the furniture has been polished and that is a remark that should be taken at face value. Quote
grendel Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 for polishing wood you cannot go too far wrong with Briwax, it comes in a wide range of shades, and its what they use in salvage hunters on quest, if its good enough for the experts, then its good enough for me. 1 Quote
vanessan Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 There’s a big hardware shop just down from the market place in Norwich, they seem to have a myriad of stuff old and new. Can’t think of the name of the shop just now but someone will know it. Quote

VetChugger Posted January 25, 2019 Author Posted January 25, 2019 Thanks very much one and all! I'm well impressed with the response and that some also likewise recall this olde worlde aroma. Sadly, in my neck of the woods, all the genuine hardware stores have long gone. We had some really good ones in both Wakefield and Leeds. Whilst I had "Glenmore" and, initially, "Crackers" I was regularly at the stores in Acle, Brundall, Loddon, Beccles and others I have forgotten. Must admit I never failed to get what I needed at the Acle store and, if they didn't have it, the man in the brown coat always said we'll have it a week on thursday! Thanks again you've given me ideas to work with! The aroma shall return! 1 Quote
