How To Determine

Hiya all, following on from my previous post about the outboard question, can someone tell me how I determine the shaft length of the outboard motor, standard,short, or long. Do I for example, measure the distance from where the outboard will sit, to the bottom of the boat, and if so, where do I go from there.
