Sailors 'anthems'

We must all have some sort of favourite piece of music or song when afloat, or that reminds us of being afloat.

Here's a few of mine:-

'Sailor' - Petula Clark - Reminds me of my time in the RN

'Sailing' - Rod Stewart - As above

'Sandstorm' - Darude - Just kinda love it - Needs plenty of volume

'Fr1ggin' in the Riggin' - Sex Pistols - Proper naughty so best not listened to if easily offended with plenty of four letter words but proper funny

When the weather is fine then you know it's a sign
For messing about on the river.
If you take my advice there's nothing so nice
As messing about on the river.
There are long boats and short boats and all kinds of craft,
And cruisers and keel boats and some with no draught.
So take off your coat and hop in a boat
Go messing about on the river.

There are boats made from kits that reach you in bits
For messing about on the river.
Or you might want to skull in a glass-fibred hull.
Just messing about on the river.
There are tillers and rudders and anchors and cleats,
And ropes that are sometimes referred to as sheets.
With the wind in your face there's no finer place,
Than messing about on the river.

There are skippers and mates and rowing club eights
Just messing about on the river.
There are pontoons and trots and all sorts of knots
For messing about on the river.
With inboards and outboards and dinghies you sail.
The first thing you learn is the right way to bail.
In a one-seat canoe you're the skipper and crew,
Just messing about on the river.

There are bridges and locks and moorings and docks
When messing about on the river.
There's a whirlpool and weir that you mustn't go near
When messing about on the river.
There are backwater places all hidden from view,
And quaint little islands just awaiting for you.
So I'll leave you right now to cast off your bow,
Go messing about on the river.

Just had to sing it.

Steeleye Span -The Victory from the Album Storm Force Ten

I saw them perform this live at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester.
This track is one of my son's favourites.

A BIT OF USELESS:-

Roger Whittaker was a twin rated pilot he had a Kingair, tail number G-SONG.

His wife Natalie had a Rockwell 114, tail number G-NATT.

My father knew the family when he worked in Kenya after WW2. Sadly his parents would suffer the most horrendous attack some 40 years later resulting in the death of his father.

Especially as Martin Carthy was back with them for a short time. His influence is amazing. Far superior and  more traditional than the Mike Batt crap!!

His brother Richard is a bl**dy good sail maker. I first used Batt Sails when he first started out in Taplow. I think he is in Bosham now. Very well thought of in dinghy racing circles.
