Place To Buy Kit For Boating Holiday_

Recommended Posts

As mentioned in other posts, we're returning to the Broads after many (24) years away. This time driving (via ferry!) from Spain. Most of our old boating gear has disappeared, rotted or in poor repair!

We will have up to a day before picking up Swan Roamer next May to buy what we need. So we'd appreciate recommendations as to the best place to buy things like waterproofs, yachting shoes and short wellies etc? I might need some new walking boots, too. The ones I have I bought in a Milletts about 35 years ago. They were OK the last time I wore them! We don't want to spend a fortune on professional yachting wellies as this could well be the only time we'll use them. But we do have Swan Roamer for 3 weeks!

Many thanks (hoping I've picked the right forum for this).

The Yarmouth Stores in Lowestoft is top notch for foul weather gear, fair prices too. As for Milletts, still good to go! Camping gear is ideal for Broads boating and Milletts is as good as any. May, brrrrr, the Broads looking at their best though, best buy a hot water bottle.

For a one stop shop that might be on your route to the boat Go Outdoors at Norwich could be useful:

Thank you Jenny. Most helpful. For some reason I thought all the Milletts had gone. We used to love the one in Enfield, North London, where we lived in UK. Absolutely nothing like that here in Spain! Maybe one of the few things I miss! Along with The Broads, The Radio Times, the cold & rain......!

We have friends who have moved from London to Lowestoft so hoping to meet up with them too.

Thank you again.

Google seems to suggest that they are still trading as part of JD Sports.

And so, it appears are several other companies. Unless it’s closed down recently, we have a branch of Blacks in Northampton, who I thought were owned by Millets, but if you delve deeper int their website, they are also part of JD Sports..  Isn’t it amazing now when you think there is some competition in the marketplace, that you are still ultimately buying from the same company?

Lucky you - Enjoy

I know! We booked ages ago. A 'Swan' was recommended by SwanR (Jean). Thank you Jean.

And thank you all for further help on this. We will definitely be popping in to Millets and, hopefully, Go Outdoors if it's still going by then. Difficult times for all retailers, though.

It is the same with plumbers merchants, most of the big well known companies including B&Q or Homebase are all owned by the Kingfisher group.

Err Nope..

B&Q and Screwfix are owned by Kingfisher group.

Homebase was owned by Sainsburys and after a couple of owners is now is owned by HILCO a company specialising in rescuing companies..

Wickes is owned by Travis Perkins who had planned to flog off Wickes this year.

Wolesley Uk own Plumb Centre,

Jewsons is owned By Saint Gobain, who now also own Build centre.

Keep looking deeper at plumb this & plumbing that.

Screwfix own the  Plumbfix brand often in adjoining buildings are you getting it confused with plumb centre? Ive always regarded Screw and Plumb fix as the same company as they share the same staff..

Certainly shall, plumbing or not can be absolutely critical to success for those of us who go fishing!

Tsk! Tsk! All, and I mean all boating clobber for the dapper gentleman afloat is bought from two places. The first is a French company called La Thems. They  did a good line in fold down Compo wellies last season and even sold marker pens so I could put the 'L' and 'R' on them. Lulu and Selsey will attest to the fine 'Heftybag' dancing trousers I purchased from their last year's line. If you require something more 'dressy' then Roys at Wroxham do a very good range in clothing and footwear 'off the peg' for the power dressing octogenarian looking to recapture the feel of the 1970's! I buy all my workshop winter hoodies and work shirts from there!

I did hesitate to name that renowned establishment sited right next to potter heigham bridge, a few visits back they had a number of pairs of cargo shorts in my size (46) which i bought in bulk as they were on offer, those shorts are still doing sterling service. the only issue i have is that they always seem to be selling some essential items i never knew i needed, if you are lucky they may have their christmas stock in (or next easters)
