If we take it as read that a "free" service will always be loaded with advertisements, then having them tailored ( or "targeted" if you prefer ) is preferable. They might even advertise boat cleaning services to me!

Well my computer has retuned from the repairer. Although my ganddaughter had got it running again, I was unable to access my online banking.Apparently the comnputer needed updating  and that was the reason so I now have to get to grips with windows 10. which is all very strange  At least I can access everything I need to. Eventually! Apparently in order to recover my lost photos the computer would have to  be sent away to a soecialist and it could cost as much as £500. I'm still  thinking about that one.  The engineer  that sorted it all out for me was very helpful and didn't charge an unreasonable amount.

Search "classic shell" online, it gives the old type start menu, it's one of the first things I've done to all my win10 upgrades.

Did he change anything inside other than updating the windows version? With the loss of photos I'd have replaced the hdd and kept the old one separate for potential data recovery, you can get a SSD (quicker than HDD) for around £30 now and use the pc knowing you are not losing more info than you already have, cloning a drive is not hard.

I've just done a post in the Members Out and About section (A Dawdle through Dovedale) explaining how my son recovered some videos I'd accidentally deleted. It probably won't help if changes have been made to the hard disk though.

I'm based in Cambs. Near Ely. I don't really know what exactly he did it other  than upgrading it to windows 10 which I'm not enjoying at all  it has put me well outside my comfort zone. what are SSD and HDD please

Solid State Drive - no moving bits. Hard Disk Drive - whizzy moving bits.

solid state drives are like the memory card you put in your phone except they can replace the hard disc drive, but are a lot quicker.

Upgrading along the years was always a bit of a trauma but at least, other than when it suddenly  changes colour Windows 10 updates happen quite often & hopefully will do so for the foreseeable future  (assuming you have automatic updates turned on)
