Boat Database - Help Needed!

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of our members have a decent level of knowledge (ideally expert level!) with MediaWiki?

I'm trying to extract stuff out of the Boat database to see what we can salvage as attempts to contact Craig's family have come to nothing.

  • oldgregg changed the title to Boat Database - Help Needed!

Hi Griff

If only mate... No sadly it needs specialist knowledge really.

Just to allay any fears that some people may have about 'stealing' the content, in reality what we are trying to do is to preserve this excellent resource and indeed Craig's legacy.

I know a few people have queried the copyright side of things - However the website very clearly states on the footer that the content is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license.

Ideally you need to get on to the hosting company and explain and see if you can take over the account, if you can do that you can rescue the whole database but obviously would be far easier with family contact, I have recently done the same with Trevors (Vetchugger) normanboats.co.uk website to save all the old info and forum but I had the massive advantage of knowing all the account details and passwords already and found his son through faceache to get the go ahead, I just had to pay the outstanding bill that was due when he passed away.

Hosting details can be found here.

https://whois.domaintools.com/broads.org.uk

20i.com seem to be the hosts so may be worth a call if only to get them to save the database to give you more time instead of just deleting when the account expires, the domain is shown as available so I guess expiry is very close or passed. Edit: 16th may 2021 it seems.

As for mediawiki, never heard of it.

Whereas I can see your efforts are all in the interests of preserving this valuable resource, and for that I commend you, but I feel uneasy that Craig's work can be manipulated and perhaps reformatted without the permission of his family. I can see the logic of Smoggy's intervention above and if there is a danger of losing the database, this seems to be a first step to secure it. But from what I see, the domain is secured under broads.org.uk (this redirects to norfolk.broads.org.uk which has expired) The former domain expires on the 16th May 2021 and the last update was on the 13th April 2020. I don't know when Craig passed away, but if it was before/around that date, it suggests the family is aware of the site.

I take note that the site is offered under the Creative Commons licence, but was Craig really meaning that anyone could come along and copy and replicate it in it's entirety when he wrote that? Or was he trying to say that information within it could be reproduced? He also has the copyright Craig Slawson note on his homepage. I just urge caution, as this could cause great upset to his family, if it's not gone about in the right way.

David, a great deal of effort has already been expended in attempts to communicate with Craigs family, but we are aware that there is a finite deadline in the expiry of the current hosting, the ideal solution would just be to take over the hosting and make the database a lasting memorial to Craigs memory, but we have to put contingencies in place in case this is not achievable. If anyone can put us in touch with Craigs family that would be of immense assistance, even if it is just to say they have things covered.

I don't think the intention long term is to copy the site as-is, and any derivative work would again be for the greater good and absolutely non-commercial.

I've met Craig a few times and have also met his wife in the past and in all honesty I don't think she had much to do with the database - It was very much his thing.

What we're trying to do at this stage is to secure the data before the hosting expires and it is lost forever. We can then work out what the next steps are.

It doesn't always have to be serious debate and people getting heated. I need you back to help me rein em in :default_biggrin:
