Some Old Photos To Pass The Time.....

Ray

Recommended Posts

These were all taken during the 1980s, sadly they were not filed with any data so the years, holidays and locations are all mixed up. Mainly posted for all the hire boats that led to our Broads passion and ultimately our own boat. Some feature the lovely Mrs Ray.... Gill, who of course has not aged a day, in nearly 40 years :default_icon_luvlove:

Just trying to place the wreck that Fireman Sam alludes to - on the Yare somewhere I assume?

I may be wrong but I seem to remember it was actually on the port bank as you headed downstream just before Stokesby, happy to be corrected if any one remembers it!

Great photos Ray. I take it the last photo is you and Gill on your way home after your hols

I wish! I would love one of those although I doubt Gill would set foot in it... she is the brains of the outfit 😁

Sea Gem was an odd shape design. I quite like it's sleek 80s design though.

She was the first one that had the mid cockpit and helm that we had hired, lovely boat but I seem to recall that the canopy had a mind of it's own lol After her we chose mid helms with sliding canopies!

3 last shots featuring the happy couple at the time (no idea who they are but they look happy 😁)

Sutton Mill when a lot of renovation work was being done, an undertaking which sadly I believe ran out of money.

And the wreck at Oulton which I'm sure I have posted here before.

Apologies to Ray for crashing his thread, but here are some more old photos.  I’ve posted these before, but the hosting site I used to use started to charge an annual fee.  I decided to not use it any more, so any links to them will now not work.

They were taken during my first boating holidays in 1969 and 1970, the boats obviously both Caribbeans from FB Wilds.  If I remember correctly, the blue one was D163 and the white one D557.

There are a few other shots of some other boats in Wilds yard, including a private build Bermuda called Lady Min, that had just been launched.

Fifth one down, the Elysian with mahogany and cream top by the windmill, looks very much like Norfolk Spitfire, custom built for my father by R Bondon at South Walsham in 1970. It's still about, with original name. Last seen on the Yare near Langley Dyke summer 2019.

I hope it is, picture is at Hunsett and won me a prize in a photo competition!

I am going ASSUME that is a view of Potter Heigham's bridge from up river. I say assume for two reasons. One - I've never seen it from that side. Two - there's so much clearance that I think you could almost fit a dual steer through there! How times change!

It was, but even then there was no guarantee of getting through the bridge.  Hoseasons used to employ a bridge pilot called Charlie Crowe and his pick up point back then was on the port side just before Woods yard as you approached from The Bure.

I’ve raided some of mum and dads old photos, I think the first 2 were taken in the Pickerel pub August 1955.  One of the inside with my dad on the left and another of a boatman called, I believe, Harry with my mum.  No idea who the rest are as I know mum and dad were staying in the pub on their honeymoon!

Not sure of the year but I would guess early 1960’s.  Grandad is helming, he was in the Navy 1917 to 1932 and again 1939 to 45.  Apparently couldn’t swim despite being sunk once and wasn’t much good at keeping a straight line, despite training D-Day landing craft crews!

The 2nd is a very young NeilB, mid 70’s !
