Dan
Interesting, though with Herbert Woods leaving Blakes I would expect demand with their remaining yards to be massively up as their remaining customers have less to choose from, so it should have done them a noticeable favour even if some left and booked away from Blakes some will have chosen from who's left. I wonder what percentage the Hoseasons yards (who are not affected by this major change) are running at, and how Herbert Woods bookings are running in comparison to this point last year. Dan Dan, Hi I see from HW's brochure that they're offering quite a few discounts on various dates: http://www.herbertwoods.co.uk/news.php I wonder how much do Blakes take for their cut of the hire fee? It must be significant if HW can offer such enticing terms! While HW are offering discounts up to 30% the only offer on the Norfolk Broads I can find in Blakes' brochure today is 5%... mbird
Excellent news for the Broads and local businesses.

I cant remember, but at one point it used to be around 30% I was a bit amazed at the 30% offer as it seemed rather un-necessarily high. Why 30% ? Would 20% not still have seemed fantastic and got them lots of bookings given its higher than their competition? Seemed an odd/extreme decision to me that I would have normally only expected to see if they had a real need to get some cash flow & income into the business quick. If I was a Herbert Woods customer I certainly wouldn't be rushing to book my next holiday early either - would you? Dan
Hockham Admiral
I guess I wouldn't, Dan....but... you can't guarantee that you'd get what you wanted!
Dan
A good point well made John, though I think massive discounts like 30% might make me happy to take that chance, or even make a compromise on my ideal first choice The offer is quite restricting in its range of starts dates so maybe they have not totally devalued the cost of a Broadland holiday just yet! Hockham Admiral
Absolutely! Before we had a boat, Dan, we used to leave our hols until a week before we went........ Then we would find whatever we could, often at massive discounts!
donnygeoff
Dan, What you said about herbert woods leaving blakes, and the blakes customers having less to choose from. When I first booked a broads holiday (many moons ago) I booked through Blakes. But when I took the boat back, and said to the boat yard...see you next year.... they said. If you book direct with us, we will give you a better price...or if we can't we will give you free fuel and car parking.... Didn't bother getting a blakes catalogue again, and have always booked direct with the yards since...
DaveS
Seems like 2011 will be a good year for being down south, away from the 'madding crowd' so to speak Dave

Then we would find whatever we could, often at massive discounts! I still do that now John, though this year we`ve booked early to get the boat we wanted. However, if it gets later in the year, say the beginning of September, and we decide to go on the Broads a couple of weeks later, we do exactly what you said above. And i totally agree about the massive discounts, usually after a bit of bargaining .

And why, I guess, the Northern Meet is held in May, when it's not quite so frenetic!
