well its happened, the doctor has told me i need to get more exercise and lose some weight, 10 minutes on the treadmill indoors daily isnt cutting the mustard, so I decided to look for some local walks, living in a city there havent traditionally been any good places to walk to, that could be described as countryside, however, it suddenly struck me today, that the army land is not far from my house, and when I looked it up, there are a few footpaths crossing it. so today I set out for a real walk, the big problem is that the first 1/4 mile to the woods is uphill all the way, that nearly killed me, but I pressed on and had a nice quiet walk round the woods, being my first day I didnt go too far, totalling a mile, up hill and down dale, there is an area of woodland 4 miles by 2 miles in total that can be explored, so i will be slowly pushing a bit further each day. hopefully this will get me fitter and allow me to lose some weight.

An ex girlfriend of mine ( she was a diet specialist) always told me that the best way to lose weight, was when you sit down to eat with the plate of food in front of you, before you pick up the knife and fork, drink a pint of water!

She also said my interpretation of a pint water i.e. herbal water (beer) does not count.

Good with the challenge.

Grendel, is there a swimming pool nearby? From your write ups last season a daily dip, or every other day, for 30 mins would surely do the trick? Works for me, not long til they reopen.

I went walking the weekend before last, sadly no benches on route, I was out for two hours and suffered or two days after, thighs that  night and hips for the next few days, so don't over do it.

I've got a pedometer app on my phone which I was going to suggest ... but then I remembered that you don't have a smart phone Grendel!

In all seriousness while it can become obsessive to carry my phone around all day to get my steps counted, the monthly target it sets you is a good motivation.

This month I needed to walk 60 miles. I've got 2 miles left to do so should just about achieve it. I know that exercise isn't going to fix my poor diet, but I know that I can walk further than I used to since I started using this. And I am getting out most days where it would have been so easy not to bother given that I'm working full time still.

phew, its a bit on the warm side out there, day 2 and I progressed with my exploring, there is a pond in the woods, so todays goal was to see the pond. well I made it to the pond and back 1.75 miles, interesting to see some fishermen set up there with a big tent, plus the obligatory bathers, the woods were busier today. en route I disturbed two squirrels, a fox and a rabbit.

All this talk of exercise made me go out for a walk too !!! Wow, me out and not in a car!!!!

I could hear an engine behind me, and could see a large van heading my way from the front.. I was on a narrow road and next to a telegraph pole. Using the pole as a bit of a support, I stepped off the road. Both vans passed in front of me, so it was, it seemed a wise move.

As I stepped back on the road, some brambly thing had wrapped round my foot. In what seemed to be very slow motion, I went flying. Lying full length on the road was, I thought,  not to be the best position. I managed to get up and limped off thinking... "I thought exercise was supposed to be good for me!"

You should think about joining a walking group, Grendel. They tend to go out at weekends or summer evenings and you get to know a great variety or walks. The social side can be motivating on days when you don't feel like going out.

Keep up the exercise! Last summer and during lockdown 1,  I started walking my local footpaths recording butterflies and I was quite impressed that I probably walked nearly 600 miles up to October!!!  Early winter wasn't so easy but kindly my daughter 2 gave me a Garmin watch and the results so far are:

January 89 miles

February 80 miles

March with one day left: 138 miles!!!!

What am I doing, well now I am recording butterflies but also taking photos of churches, landscapes and yes letter boxes!!!!!

Today I achieved this month’s target of 60 miles. Not that far by a lot of people’s standards but to average 2 miles a day in cold weather and fitted around working is something I’m pleased I managed to do.

thats the tricky bit, finding the time to do all this exercise, i start work at 6am, so it has to be after work, fortunately I finish at 3, so its get ready and head straight out  for about an hour, at the moment though I am finding that leaves me not wanting to do anything for the next couple of hours after, though hopefully that will improve. theres no choice though, if I want to regain some measure of fitness I need to keep this up, I realise now that if I had started this at the beginning of lockdown last year, i would be in a much better situation now.

I’m sure that you will get there Grendel. Keep at it.

Home working took away all those walks around the office during the working day. The walk to the shops at lunchtime. And even just the steps from the the house to the car to the office.

My walking is concentrated on 2 days out of 7 topped up with 2 days walking to walk! Daughter 2 who was the one with leukemia is walking every day now after work as well as building up her running. It can be done although it had to be done slowly!

todays walk was a bit of a fiasco, I tried a different route and took several wrong turnings on the way back, meaning I suddenly found myself back on my earlier route, so after backtracking a bit to get back on track, so todays total was 2.3 miles, but i arrived home aching
