Left the wet shed at 09:00 this morning , a chilly crisp winter morning , with clear grey skies, gentle cruise down the Ant only passing four other boats , Ludham bridge a smidge under 8ft so mast down , arrived at Ranworth, only three boats there and Papaver in the taxi rank , had a lovely chat and Bramble played with their two dogs (sorry we got them so muddy) , Griff and Broad Ambition (and crew)  arrived a couple of hours later and Papaver moved on leaving us to claim the taxi rank .

Moored up for the evening now , plugged in radiator on , very snug .

Had a quiet cruise up to Horning , moored up at the staithe for brunch , departed at 13:00 our destination being Sutton staithe green , no luck , the normal culprits who have been moored there for five weeks at least occupying all the green moorings !!!

I’m phoning Yare house tomorrow to order some mere leccy cards so I’m certain to express my displeasure !!!

settled on Stalham staithe instead for the evening , Sod’s law but a BA 4x4 passes , noting the reg number on Pipedreams , wonder if they pop up to Sutton and speak to the current overstayers , willing to bet otherwise .

Just a small note of balance here.

Of the boats moored at Sutton Green, only one is a real overstayer. The others move back and forth between other moorings and all are both regular and frequent moorers at Sutton. Yes, sometimes the regular visitors do push their luck a bit, but nowhere near the amount suggested.

The real overstayer there is an irritation to me, taking up more space than necessary, and relying on notices in his window saying he is waiting for work to be done on his boat. I estimate he has been there for nearly 3 months now.

Oh and before anyone says anything,  I am well aware that I too have on a few occasions pushed my luck a bit, 48 hours being not uncommon and once nearly a week ( though on that occasion I had a genuine reason and I believe the BA was aware.)

Finally I add that in the winter months these regular visitors to that mooring do more frequently overstay and little is said owing to the reduced demand for space.

Only my.opinion but manners would leave the leccy and water points free for 24 hour moorers, until dusk anyway and then move along first thing in the morning if you are over staying

Otherwise it makes it like a home mooring and every toll payer should be able to use the facilities as intended.

For the last four visits we have made at least 6 of the boats have been moored up on the green on the Saturday and Sunday evenings , yes it may be pure coincidence that this is the two evenings (48hrs) that they also choose to be there but extremely frustrating for myself and others that these moorings are denied to us in such a manner.

During the pandemic obviously the 24hr rule was rightfully lifted , and yes I have myself during quieter months stayed for 48hrs on a popular mooring, however I made it known that if the moorings filled up we would vacate the mooring.

I actually think a 48hr ruling out of season would be a good thing if it were to be made official , the trouble is that if you give 24hr then some take 48 , if you then permit 48 this becomes 72 and so on , the Broads are for the enjoyment of all and the facilities (water and electricity hook up) are intended for everyone not just a select few .

I’m quite happy for over stayers in t winter at quiet hardly used venues

The problem with that is that we are almost in Winter now, and as two people have already said on this thread, they wanted to use the mooring and found it full. There are those of us with home moorings who don't play the system that want to complete the occasional Winter or Autumn cruise and don't expect to find no room at the Inn.

I can understand the BA turning a bit of a blind eye to over stayers in the Winter, but when it means a mooring complete with electric and water is effectively out of bounds for those who want the very occasional night there then something has gone wrong.

Perhaps the answer is for the BA to designate one or two mooring spots, or maybe 50% of the mooring, not the whole mooring, to a 48 or 72 hour limit out of season with the rest of the mooring having the 24 hour limit properly enforced, perhaps with a no return within 48 hours.
